[ONTBIRDS] Glaucous-winged Gull in Sault Ste. Marie

2020-12-18 Thread Carter Dorscht via ONTBIRDS
Hi everyone,

What seems like a slam dunk Glaucous-winged Gull was found by Kirk Zufelt today
in Sault Ste. Marie. Where he found it has ZERO access for birders, but he
observed it fly off towards the St. Marys River, so it could be found where
gulls concentrate there, like the rapids off Whitefish Island or in the Station
Mall parking lot around the old Sears building. No positive reports from the
river area yet this afternoon. The SSM CBC is tomorrow so there will be lots of
eyes out looking then.

[Ontbirds] Mountain Bluebird Continues - Algoma District

2019-11-15 Thread Carter Dorscht via ONTBIRDS
Hi all,

The Mountain Bluebird continues as of this morning at corner of Government Road
and Smith Road in Tarbutt Township, Algoma District. It comes and goes, so
often a lot of effort is needed to get the bird, but sometimes you get lucky
and it's present when you arrive. It sometimes visits the feeders at 3388
Government Road, which are visible from the road and they have no issues with
you looking.

This intersection is approximately about 1.5km off of Highway 17 (exit at Smith
Road), which is 45km east of the city limits of Sault Ste. Marie or 5km west of
the town of Desbarats.

[Ontbirds] Potentially two Varied Thrushes and late report of Mountain Bluebird - Algoma District

2019-11-11 Thread Carter Dorscht via ONTBIRDS
Hi all,

Late this afternoon, I was notified about a Varied Thrush sighting here in the
Algoma District. When I arrived at the residence, I was talking to one of the
homeowners and he said there were actually two of them present. He had photos
of a male, but only a description of the second bird, which he thought was a
female and his description was bang on for a female. Now that they are aware of
the significance of two at once, they will attempt to get photos of both.

The bird(s) was visiting a feeder in Tarbutt Township, which is about 30
minutes east of Sault Ste. Marie. Should anyone be actually interested in
looking for these birds themselves, message me directly, as the homeowners does
not want their address broadcasted publicly. There will be viewing
opportunities should they continue to come to the feeders. I did not see them
while I was there today from about 4:15pm to 4:45pm.

Also, we had a Mountain Bluebird at the corner of Smith Road and Government
Road, also in Tarbutt Township, from Nov 7th to 9th. It was going back and
forth between the two houses there, often being seen from the road. It appears
to have moved on, at least from this exact location, after no sightings the
past two days. Many of you likely saw this reported elsewhere, but my apologies
for forgetting to get it out to Ontbirds.

[Ontbirds] Western Tanager - Echo Bay, Ontario

2019-05-22 Thread Carter Dorscht via ONTBIRDS
Hi all,

I had a female Western Tanager in my yard this morning. It was feeding on the
oranges I have out for the orioles. It continues as of 10:30am.

I'm located on Echo Lake Road in Echo Bay, which is approximately 15 minutes
east of Sault Ste. Marie. Echo Lake Road is the first left off Highway 638,
which is accessed from Highway 17 right at Echo Bay.

If anyone local wants to look for this bird, send me an email.

[Ontbirds] Eurasian Tree Sparrow in Wawa

2017-11-03 Thread Carter Dorscht via ONTBIRDS
Eurasian Tree Sparrow has been reported to the Sault Naturalists in Wawa,
Ontario. It's been coming to a feeder since October 16th apparently. I just
talked on the phone with the homeowner right now and she was looking at the
bird as she was talking to me. I'm planning on heading up there bright and
early tomorrow morning from Sault Ste. Marie to see it. Photo can be seen at
the link here:
http://soonats.pbworks.com/w/page/116361345/Report%20Bird%20Sightings%E2%80%942017

It's located at 2 Carverhill Street in Wawa, Ontario, which is right along the
waterfront of Wawa Lake. It can be viewed from the road, I'm told, but
sometimes isn't the best view.

[Ontbirds] Buff-breasted Sandpiper near Echo Bay, Ontario.

2017-08-24 Thread Carter Dorscht via ONTBIRDS
This morning, around 8am, I came across a Buff-breasted Sandpiper at the sod
farm just outside of Echo Bay, which is just east of Sault Ste. Marie.

There were also Baird's Sandpipers, Semipalmated Plovers and potentially
another species or two, I'm still going through all my photos.

The sod farm is located at the east corner of Highway 17 and Lake George Road,
best seen from Lake George Road.
