MourningXRedstart Hybrid? at Old Cut, Long Point
Yesterday afternoon (Saturday May 17) a wave of American Redstarts came through the Old Cut Station after the banding had stopped. One individual was very strange. It had the back, wing bars and tail of a female redstart but had the grey head with grey and black chest bands of a mourning warbler. Unfortunately it was silent but it definitely looked like what I imagine a Mourning X Redstart Hybrid would if I had ever thought they did!. It's behaviour also indicated its mixed heritage. Although it had the wing flit of the Redstart it was much more definitely foraging on the ground that the other Redstarts that it was migrating with. I haven't heard of this cross before and wish I had pictures of this strange entity. Others also noted the oddity but I don't have their names. Any thouhts or ideas about prevalence. Thanks.
