[Ontbirds] Tufted Titmouse - Presqu'ile Provincial Park

2014-05-13 Thread Dennis Garratt via ONTBIRDS
Greetings

Today at approximately 11:00 I found a Tufted Titmouse feeding in the brush
just north of the visitor centre/lighthouse. I am not aware of any previous
sightings at Presqu'ile since the 1980's!

To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton.
Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that
is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is restricted
at this time of year to prevent disturbance to the colonial nesting birds
there.
Birders are encouraged to record their observations on the bird sightings
board provided near the campground office by The Friends of Presqu'ile Park
and to fill out a rare bird report for species not listed there.

[Ontbirds] Algonquin Park, March 28

2011-03-29 Thread Dennis Garratt
I birded along the highway 60 corridor and adjacent park roads yesterday.
Numerous Redpolls both Common (2 subspecies) and Hoary (2 subspecies) were
observed at the Spruce Bog Boardwalk and along Opeongo Road. The feeders at
the Visitor Centre were very quiet. Three Red Crossbills were observed along
the Arowhon Road (requires four wheel drive due to snow and ice in many
sections) around km 4. Gray Jays and Ruffed Grouse were also observed along
Opeongo Road. A Red-tailed Hawlk was observed being mobbed by ravens near
Lake of Two Rivers. Black-capped Chickadees, Hairy Woodpeckers, American
Crows and Common Ravens were easily found. A single boreal Chickadee was
observed near the suet feeder at the Spruce Bog Boardwalk.

Directions (as per Ron tozer):
Algonquin Park is three hours north of Toronto, via Highways 400,
11 and 60. Follow the signs, which start in Toronto on Highway 400.
>From Ottawa, take Highway 17 to Renfrew, then follow Highway 60 to the park.
Kilometre markers along Highway 60 in the Park go from the West Gate (km 0)
to near the East Gate (km 56). Get your park permit and the park tabloid
(with a map of birding locations mentioned
here) at the gates.

The Visitor Centre at km 43 has recent bird sightings, feeders, and
information. The centre and restaurant are open on weekends from 10 am to 5
pm.

[Ontbirds] Tufted Titmouse - Cobourg

2010-07-25 Thread Dennis Garratt
At approximately 0950h this morning I observed what appeared to be a Tufted
Titmouse in a deciduous woodland in the east end of Cobourg. At 1615h this
afternoon a positive sighting was made of a Tufted Titmouse, possibly the
same bird observed earlier in the day. This time I was able to observe the
bird for about ten minutes before it disappeared in the brush. The typical
song - a loud whistled peter, peter, peter was also noted.

Directions: From downtown Cobourg (Division & King Street) proceed east on
King Street (formerly Hwy #2) to Willmott Street, turn right and proceed
south to Thompson Street turning left (east) and proceed to the intersection
with Normar Road. The Titmouse has been observed in the woods on the
northwest corner near the stream and abandon farm buildings. It has also
been observed crossing to the eastern side of Normar Road, once again near
the stream and some less visible abandon farm buildings.

throughout Brighton.
