Birds returned but no Slaty. Bill Lamond still present - hopefully bird will
return tomorrow. Gulls tend to be 11 into late afternoon at this location.

[Ontbirds] SBGU Brantford landfill Access

2018-12-19 Thread Ellen Horak via ONTBIRDS
I have given my contact info to be passed to the supervisor at the Landfill and
asked to be contacted as access changes. At the moment no birders are allowed
to the dump face but you can access the dike road on the right just before the
weigh scales. You do not need to sign in. It is a one lane road and I am not
sure if it loops around the dump. We turned around so exercise caution doing
that. Gulls are often in the field and can be viewed flying into the dump face.
I’ll post when/ if I receive updates. You can also continue to check Mohawk
Lake where they have also been seen.

Despite much effort from numerous birders pounding the pavement the Townsend’s
was not seen today between 10 and 4:15. It may still be around or expanded its
area but was not to be for a number of disappointed birders traveling long
distances. Thanks to Steve and Ann for coming out and trying to find the bird
for us.

The Red-necked Phalarope originally found by Fred Urie and reported this
morning by Owen Yates was still present at 11 a.m. this morning when we left
there.

401W to exit 286

Turn right onto Townline Rd.

Turn left onto Melran Dr.

Turn left onto River Rd./Queen St.

The lookout from Ellicott landing is approx. 500 m on your right.

The phalarope was straight out (more or less) from the viewing area, around 200
m. or so.

Sarah Lamond found a male Eurasian wigeon some time ago in a flooded field in
flamboroough  on concession 5 west of lynden road on the south side. Barb
Charlton and I redound the bird a short time ago at the back of the flooded
area with some American wigeon. A scope is mandatory.  Nice find Sarah!

Directions

403 west to Hwy 52 north to roundabout at Hwy 5. Take Hwy 5 west to lynden
road. North on lynden it will do a slight jog at 4th concession west then turn
left west at 5th concession. Spot is about a km down on the left. Be wary of
the traffic here

[Ontbirds] Perth Wetlands - Mitchell - Wilson's Phalarope and Snipes, Stilt, Plovers

2014-08-10 Thread Ellen Horak via ONTBIRDS
Well worth the drive!  What a lovely spot! Great views of lots of shore birds
between 4-7p.m. - they are behind a 5'chain-link fence making photos difficult
but scope views were fantastic for us newbies to easily identify birds. Similar
to the report from this morning: 2 Wilson's Phalarope, 2 Solitary
Sandpipers,1-2 Stilt Sandpipers (a lifer for us), a few Semi-palmated Plovers,
1 Black-bellied Plover, 4 Wilson's Snipes, 4 Spotted Sandpipers,a number of
Pectoral Sandpipers and many Yellowlegs, Least, Semi-palmated Sandpiper,1 Great
Egret(no tags).

DIRECTIONS - from the East, follow Hwy8 through Stratford, to the first traffic
lights in Mitchell. Turn LEFT onto Wellington Street and follow it to Frank
Street. Continue on the gravel road, past the Ball Diamond, to the parking lot.
From the West, follow Hwy 8 into Mitchell. At the bottom of the hill, turn
RIGHT onto Hwy 23 South. Turn LEFT onto Frank Street (the last street on the
left), over the bridge and up the hill. Turn RIGHT onto the gravel road at the
Ball Diamond and follow it to the parking lot. From the South, follow Hwy 23 to
Mitchell. Just past the blue Mitchell sign, turn RIGHT onto Frank Street (at
the 50 km/h sign) and proceed over the bridge to the Ball Diamond. Turn RIGHT
onto the gravel road to the parking lot. Cell 2 is beside the parking lot, Cell
3 is east of the fenced cell and Cell 5 is the large Cell to the south-east. NO
PERMITS REQUIRED.

[Ontbirds] Wilson's Phalarope Great Egrets Townsend Lagoons

2014-08-01 Thread Ellen Horak via ONTBIRDS
One Wilson's Phalarope was seen this afternoon by Len Manning and Lisa Tesky
and again around 7:50 this evening by Jerry and I in Cell#1.  Pictures taken.
3 Great Egrets were in Cell#3 - flew before we had a chance to see if they were
tagged - but were likely going to roost there.  Many other shorebirds present.

Townsend Sewage Lagoons are on Concession 14 just west of Haldimand road 74 -
there is a gate across a gravel drive with a small parking area on the opposite
side of the road.  The gates are locked but you can walk around the gate to
access the area.  I think you are only supposed to access them on weekends - we
went today at 6.
