[Ontbirds] Willet at Presqu’ile Provincial Park

2019-08-19 Thread John Geale via ONTBIRDS
The Presqu'ile Willet was still present at about 4:30 pm today (August 19). To
the south of Beach 2 the beach effectively ends, as the water comes right up to
the dense swath of willows, rushes, grasses, etc. that would be to the east of
the beach at lower water levels. Between this swath of willows, etc. and the
next one east there is a wet, muddy swale with a pond towards the south end;
today the bird was at this pond. I walked south from Beach 1, but the Beach 2
parking lot would be closer. The Beach 3 gate is closed, but I think one could
park at the gate and find a way to the swale. I recommend rubber boots.
JohnDirections: Presqu’ile Provincial Park is located on the north shore of
Lake Ontario, just south of the town of Brighton.  It can be reached from
either Hwy. 401, or County Road 2 and is well signed.

Re: [Ontbirds] Cattle Egret near Presqu’ile (Huff Rd)

2018-05-23 Thread John Geale via ONTBIRDS
At about 12:20 pm today the Cattle Egret was with a herd of cows and calves
(white; Charolais?) on the west side of Huff Rd., about 1.6 km south of County
Road 2. Huff Rd. runs south from CR 2 about 1.6 km west of Brighton or about 10
km east of Colborne.
The grass is quite long in places, and I didn't see it on my first pass. Don't
give up too quickly.

opposite to the barns on the west side of the road.

There are also Cliff Swallows and field birds at this location.

Re: [Ontbirds] Western Tanager, Port Hope - May 7

2018-05-07 Thread John Geale via ONTBIRDS
The bird was very cooperatively present from at least 10:15 to 10:25 this
morning. Directions below, but this morning it was perhaps 100 m south of the
concrete barriers.John
Directions:  Take 28 south to the bottom to Peter Street (Highway 2), turn
east at the lights, go east up the hill to the lights and turn south on
Hope Street, cross railroad and continue south until the road pulls east
along the lake; keep on it past Sculthorpe Marsh and on east to the Sewage
Plant where it swings south; go to the cement parking barrier. It was 25
yards south of the barrier above the road. It moved around slowly for an
hour but kept coming back to the tamaracks feeding at about 30 feet up.

Re: [Ontbirds] Barnacle Goose - Schomberg - 7:50 pm at Trisan Centre - YES

2018-03-19 Thread John Geale via ONTBIRDS
At 7:00 pm this evening there were perhaps a couple of dozen geese on the pond
at the Trisan Centre; same at 7:45 pm. But in the next 10 or 15 minutes
hundreds arrived, and although the Barnacle was not seen arriving we were able
to pick it out on the water while there was (barely) enough light. In fact,
when it faced east it was quite hard to pick out, but when it faced into the
still reasonably bright western sky it showed quite well.
Good luck.John GealePort Hope, ON
Directions: Once at Schomberg, Dillane Dr. is about 600 m south of Hwy. 9, off
Hwy. 27. Follow Dillane Dr. east around the curve, for about 450 m. Turn east
into the Trisan Centre parking lot. The pond can be clearly viewed from the
viewing platform at the east end of the parking lot.

[Ontbirds] Dickcissel, north of Port Hope

2014-05-09 Thread John Geale via ONTBIRDS
Hi, everyone - I just got back from a neighbour's house where a male Dickcissel
was at a feeder. The owner (Doreen Little) said it was first seen late
yesterday afternoon, and it has been coming frequently today, staying for 5 or
10 minutes and then disappearing for an hour or two. I waited from 5:00 to 5:50
pm today and it did not show; as I walked in the door at home the phone rang -
it was Doreen saying it had reappeared, so I dashed over and found it just
after 6:00 pm.

Directions:
From Port Hope, go north on County Road (formerly Hwy.) 28 about 8 km north of
Hwy. 401. Turn east on Hamilton Township 6th Line (also known as Vimy Ridge
Road). Go east 3 km to Little Road and turn north. Go 1.7 km north to 4394
Little Road (west side of the road). The bird was at the feeder which can be
seen from the east side of the road. Doreen says you are welcome to go and sit
on their porch to wait if you wish.

From Peterborough, come south on CR 28 to Bewdley and carry on a little
further south (County Road 9, which has the traffic lights just south of
Bewdley, is about 4 km north of Vimy Ridge Road), turn east and carry on as
above.

Cheers,
John Geale
