[Ontbirds] 4 Raptor Desk Day

2011-12-09 Thread John Haig
Nasty day outside but the raptors seemed to be enjoying it. Had an
immature harrier, adult cooper's hawk, adult harrier, adult kestrel, and
two rough legged hawks hunting around the farm. I watched all but one of
the rough-legs catch prey. The kestrel spent the better part of a half
hour devouring a star-nosed mole right outside my window. (the cooper's,
one of the harriers and one of the rough-legged's were all viewed from my
office desk. Extremely productive day.)
My farm is 5 miles NE of Gananoque, ON.

[Ontbirds] Peregrine Falcon, Ivy Lea

2011-09-23 Thread John Haig
There was a peregrine hanging out around the Canadian span of the 1000
Islands Bridge at noon today. I watched it soaring between the suspension
towers and perching on the top of the North suspension tower. There are
ample rock pigeons that roost on the structure so it may well be sticking
around.

The 1000 Islands International Bridge is at the end of Hwy 137 via the 401
(eastbound exit 661) or from the 1000 Islands Parkway from Gananoque or
Brockville. There is a toll to cross to Hill Island, Ontario.

[Ontbirds]Snow Geese, Long Sault

2008-04-05 Thread John Haig
There were at least a couple of thousand greater snow geese along with
many, many, many more Canada geese in the general vicinity of the Long
Sault this afternoon, particularly in the open water at the east end
of the Long Sault Parkway (closest to Cornwall)

There was also a very large number (hundreds) of robins along the
parkway, clinging to patches of open ground...much of the area still
appears to have well over a foot of snow on the ground.

Directions: From Hwy 401 exit 778 south on Moulinette Road to County
Road 2...Long Sault Parkway begins opposite.

Best Regards

Male Harlequin, Fox Sparrows at Col Sam Smith Park - April 20, 2006

I birded Col Sam Smith Park this afternoon and found and photographed a =
male
harlequin in mostly breeding plumage. The bird was about 100-150m =
offshore
amongst a flock of bufflehead. I also found 7 fox sparrows scattered
throughout the park. In the water were 27 common loons and about 20 each =
of
horned grebes and red-necked grebes.

=20

I have created a map of the location where I saw the birds to aid other
birders in trying to find them as I=92m not great with directions. The =
map and
a couple of pictures of the harlequin can be found at
http://www.giraud.com/latest or by going to http://www.giraud.com
http://www.giraud.com/ and click on the appropriate link below the =
main
picture. North is up on the map.

=20

1. The location of the harlequin is noted in red in the water to the
east of the park. It was last seen heading west, swimming after a female
bufflehead. A scope would be very helpful in picking out the bird.
2. Fox sparrows are noted on the map with a f.
3. Common loons are denoted by a l
4. Horned grebes are denoted with a h
5. Red-necked grebes are denoted with a r
6. Savannah sparrows are denoted with a s
7. The green area at the top of map is The Bowl, an excellent migrant
trap especially for warblers and a good place to remember.=20

=20

In total, I saw 41 species of birds, no warblers. There were a few =
hermit
thrushes, lots of kinglets (both species) and a few brown creepers.

=20

Col Sam Smith Park is located at the base of Kipling Ave in Toronto. See =
the
map for location.

Good birding
