[Ontbirds] Toronto Waterfront West Field Trip
OFO Waterfront Field Trip, Dec 15 2019 Today’s Waterfront West OFO was attended just two participants! Having just participated in a gruelling foul-weather Christmas Bird Count the day before, I was happy to lead a leisurely outing in fine weather (but a bit windy). Our small group covered East and West Humber Bay Park and Colonel Sam Park, plus we were happy to pick up 4 species at the MacDonald’s Restaurant we stopped at for lunch. We birded till about 3:30. Both waterfowl and land bird numbers seemed down this year. The variety and quantity of ducks was especially low. Highlights included White-winged Scoter seen at Humber Bay Park and Turkey Vulture (flypast), Golden-crowned Kinglet and Hermit Thrush seen at Colonel Sam Park. Thanks again to Maurilio and Elliot Cocca for their great companionship and keen eyes! [Ontbirds] Palgrave, Everett, Beeton, Shomberg OFO Fieldtrip
Our group of 22 birders was greeted by near perfect weather and some pleasant surprises during our tour of northern York and southern Dufferin Counties on Saturday. Perhaps our biggest highlight was a roosting Common Nighthawk in plain view in the Palgrave Conservation Area as we entered. The bird even revealed its wing bars by taking off just as we were exiting the park! Nearby was a very accommodating Black-billed Cuckoo. Also seen were several other species including Philadelphia Vireo, Brown Creeper, Black and White, Black-throated Green and Tennessee Warblers, and both nuthatches. Surprisingly, we were unable to turn up a single Pine Warbler! At a nearby Humber Station Road swamp we were happy to hear, but not see, a Virginia Rail, and Belted Kingfisher. After a quick lunch break (I got to check out a spiffy Tesla owned by one of our group members) we headed to the Everett Gravel Pit. On the way we stopped briefly to view a couple Trumpeter Swans and a Vesper Sparrow at the Horse Ponds. At the Everett Gravel Pit water levels are currently low, which is conducive to shorebirds. Unfortunately, the distances involved and the heat haze made IDing small peeps quite challenging. Both Yellowlegs were present as well as Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers. Also present were Green-winged Teal, Caspian Tern, Great Egret, Great-blue Heron and Mute Swans. Our group disbanded at this point. Recent reconnaissance, had indicated that the Beeton Sod Farm area was bone dry and unproductive. Some more dedicated group members checked out the Schomberg Sewage Lagoons on their way home and reported two Sandhill Cranes and Baird’s Sandpiper. All in all a very enjoyable and productive outing. Thanks to Ken Morin and Brian Roberts for logistical support along the way. [Ontbirds] Report for the OFO Lakeshore West Field Trip Saturday December 8
Somewhat surprisingly, the weather for this year’s outing was mild and pleasant! 24 participants enjoyed a relatively balmy day on Saturday, visiting both Humber Bay and Colonel Sam parks. Nothing particularly rare was seen, but we had great views 41 species including golden-crowned and ruby-crowned kinglet, winter wren, mockingbird, yellow-dumped warbler, white-winged scoter and a quite late grey catbird. Special thanks to Marvin Medelko for compiling the trip list. It was fun to have such an eager and inquisitive group of birders come out! [Ontbirds] OFO field trip: Happy Valley / Palgrave
18 birders spent the day exploring the Happy Valley Reserve and the Palgrave Conservation area on Saturday June 9. With the help of fine weather and low winds we were able for see a total of 61 species. Here are a few highlights. The day began rather slowly, but picked up as time passed. In the Happy Valley area we were rewarded with great views of scarlet tanager, eastern towhee and chestnut-sided warbler. Hood warbler was more elusive, but a fine male black-throated green warbler put on quite a show. Outside the reserve, we had eastern bluebirds, meadowlark, bobolink and virginia rail. We also had a great look at a cedar waxwing building a nest. Perhaps the highlight of the day was the very cooperative grasshopper sparrow near Palgrave. A real crowd pleaser! Palgrave reserve gave us pine and mourning warbler and the lovely call of white-throated sparrows. A short drive down the road produced alder flycatcher and northern waterthrush. All in all a wonderful day of birding with great companionship! Cheers, John Schmelefske ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] OFO Field Trip - Waterfront West of Toronto
OFO Trip summary: Three relatively new birders attended today's waterfront outing along the lakeshore west of Toronto. 38 species were seen. The small group size allowed us to linger on each species and look at details. The day began at Humber Bay Park where we were lucky to get a good look at a Winter Wren.. Other highlights here were White-winged Scoter, Great Black-backed Gull and Green-winged Teal. The next stop was Colonel Sam Park, where an American Widgeon, Red-Necked Grebes and numberous other waterfowl were seen. The final stop of the day was Sedgwick Park where Nashville and Yellow-rumped Warblers were still present. Also seen were Golden=crowned and Ruby Crowned Kinglets as well as another Winter Wren and Brown Creeper. Many thanks to the three eager participants for their enthusiasm and companionship! [Ontbirds] OFO Happy Valley / Palgrave Field Trip
Our field trip yesterday started off slow with no sightings of our target species, Acadian Flycatcher or Hooded Warbler, in the Happy Valley reserve. We wondered if the weather was a factor since the trails were littered with fallen branches from recent storms. The high canopy made for challenging birding but our intrepid band of 20 members was not deterred. We managed to find several species including a probable Yellow-billed Cuckoo, heard but not seen. We picked up Eastern Bluebird, Cliff Swallow and Virginia Rail on the drive to Tim’s for lunch. Things really improved in the afternoon as the focus shifted to the area around Palgrave. Great views were had of Blackburnian and Pine Warbles. Another Virginia Rail gave the entire group stunning views as it attempted to drive us from it’s territory. Some group members got stunning photos. Also present were Broad-winged Hawk and Green Heron. Further on up the road we encountered a singing Alder Flycatcher, a beautifully coloured male Purple Finch, and singing Winter Wren. The day ended at a small wetland near Hwy 9 on Humber Station Road. Here we had Green Heron and a female Hooded Merganser with 5 young. Perhaps the bird of the trip was our final sighting, picked up by one of our younger group members. This was a Common Gallinule, definitely a difficult species to find in this area. We ended the day with a respectable total of 61 species. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
