[Ontbirds] Retracting Post - Greater White-fronted Goose

2019-12-27 Thread Todd Pepper via ONTBIRDS
With input from several friends I am retracting my post about the Greater
White-fronted Goose. Seems it is a Greylag Goose, and likely an escaped
domesticated bird.

Thanks.

[Ontbirds] Purple Gallinule at John R Park Homestead

2018-08-19 Thread Todd Pepper via ONTBIRDS
Three of us had very brief glimpses of the Purple Gallinule at 7:50 P.M. at
John R Park Homestead before it slipped back into the thick phragmites.

Directions as per Jeremy’s original post -

> Location: John R Park Homestead cbe found by searching Google Maps, and is on
> County Rd 50 between Kingsville and Harrow in Essex County. If you park in
> the gravel parking lot up against a flower garden, walk to County Rd 50 and
> turn right. There is a bridge over the road, and the bird is less than 100m
> south of Rd50 (toward the lake). Viewing is
> difficult and will require patience. The bird was resting for a while out of
> sight, then came back into view and foraged before flying across the creek,
> where it was still viewable but tricky. Hopefully that makes enough sense!
> The approximate GPS coordinate of the bird is (41.9966, -82.8485), which is
> in the middle of a small marsh.

[Ontbirds] Point Pelee Frigatebird

2017-07-01 Thread Todd Pepper via ONTBIRDS
The Magnificent Frigatebird came in at 9:30 pm tonight to roost in the same
maple tree on the jetty at Sturgeon Creek where it has been seen since this
past Thursday.

The owners of 417 Robson Road are very welcoming & their property is as close
as you can get to the bird for photos. The deck at Pelee Wings still provides a
good vantage point to observe the bird.

Take the Bevel Line Road from Leamington. The big bridge at the end of the
Bevel Line goes over Sturgeon Creek. The tree is the last one on the right
(north) side of the jetty around the mouth of the creek.

[Ontbirds] Swainson's Hawk - North of Alvinston

2016-09-11 Thread Todd Pepper via ONTBIRDS
--- Begin Message ---
At approximately 11:30 am while driving north on Highway 21 north of Alvinston
in Lambton County I saw the long, thin profile of a raptor up ahead of me on a
hydro line that was different from the profiles of all the Red-tails I had
already driven past. Sure enough it was an adult light race Swainson's Hawk.

I always wondered where the Swainson's Hawks came from when I was counting
hawks at the Holiday Beach Migration Observatory.

During the afternoon Friends of Point Pelee hikes the Hooded Warbler was seen
well again on the west side of the Tip near the bench. What I believe are the
first Chimney Swifts of the season were flying around the tram stop area, and A
Pine Warbler was seen near the 42nd parallel sign.

Up to 7 Sandhill Cranes were seen flying over the Woodland Trail and Visitor's
Centre.

A Brown Thrasher was seen near the White Pine Picnic area.

[Ontbirds] Bicknell's Thrush at Point Pelee

2014-05-31 Thread Todd Pepper via ONTBIRDS
Alan Wormington found a Bicknell's Thrush at Point Pelee this morning. Marianne
Reid, Kory Renaud, Henrietta O'Neil, Dan Green and I are currently watching the
bird. We first encountered it at the "fisherman" sign at the Tip and followed
it north to the bench. It is hugging the east side of the rock wall, mostly
foraging on the ground, but occasionally jumping up to sit on a low branch or
rock.

[Ontbirds] Whimbrel at Wheatley Harbour

2014-05-24 Thread Todd Pepper via ONTBIRDS
A flock of 22 Whimbrel and 3 Red Knots were just seen flying around Wheatley

circling it a couple times and then flew east heading towards Wheatley
Provincial Park.

The Wheatley Harbour is located at the south end of Kent County Road 1.

For those interested in the American White Pelicans they are back out in the
open marsh and easily seen from the Lebo Creek bridge on the north side of the
marsh.

[Ontbirds] Mississippi Kite - Point Pelee

At approximately 1:00 p.m. this afternoon as I was walking south on the
Woodland Nature Trail between bridges B and A I saw a Mississippi Kite flying
south just over the tree tops. I saw it 3 or 4 times in between the trees, as
did another couple who were on the same trail.

Sorry for the late post, but there was no internet access and then I had a
birding hike at the Northwest Beach area of Point Pelee starting at 1:30.
