[ONTBIRDS] Eurasian Green-winged (Common) Teal - Toronto
Present today at G. Ross Lord Park. Associates closely with three Green-winged Teal. Directions: Take Dufferin St. north of Finch Ave. to the main park entrance on the east side. Drive down the main park road until it ends at a parking lot at the south end of the park. Follow a well-trampled trail south to the reservoir and look right. The Teals are in the open water, or on the shoreline mud along with many Mallards. The viewing here well supports social distancing. Please note at the time of writing, 401 eastbound express lanes are closed at the Allen. Best to travel across the city using either Sheppard, Finch or Steeles Ave. Good Luck! [ONTBIRDS] Variegated Flycatcher Not Seen Yet - Nov. 18 - Brooklin
I am making this posting as a service to those who don’t have access to the “other” bird reporting applications. From the information gathered from these “other” reporting apps, the Flycatcher has not been reported so far today. There are many folks looking and hope they report to this forum if found. I am not in the field myself (I observed the bird on Monday). Hopefully, the bird re-orientated itself to migrate back in its normal direction i.e. southwards; as an austral migrant it should be in southern South America by now! [Ontbirds] Brown Thrasher - Toronto
***Exclusive Ontbirds Posting*** A Brown Thrasher is coming to the feeder in Lambton Woods. It was first observed yesterday at about 1 p.m. by Dave Langford and seen today by myself around noon. It is of course rather furtive and its visits to seed infrequent and very brief. I posted this as I know of no other sightings so far in December and date rarities have been thin on the ground so far this winter listing season. Ontbirds was selected to ensure that this was communicated to the widest possible audience. Directions: Proceed east along Edenbridge Dr. from Royal York Blvd. to James Gardens parking lot. Walk along trail past Lambton Woods sign and up the hill to the feeders. They are stocked every morning at about 10 a.m. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization. Re: [Ontbirds] Further Info re: Avocets at Holland Landing Sewage Lagoons
Ontbirders, Not to discourage anyone but entrance to these lagoons is not permitted at any time to the public. From personal experience these lagoons are patrolled regularly, and if you encounter a Region of York employee you will be asked to leave. Remember the OFO Code of Ethics. [Ontbirds] Blue Grosbeak - Toronto (High Park)
An adult male Blue Grosbeak was found this morning by Jerry DeMarco and seen again early this evening by yours truly and David Langford. It was also seen again earlier today, after the initial discovery and after considerable effort, by Bob Yukich. Directions: Take the Bloor St. entrance to High Park. The bird was seen in the woodland immediately west of the first large open area (Oak Savannah), which is situated between West Dr. and Grenadier Pond. Look for a steep, wide path descending from West Drive to the pond (the now overgrown ski or toboggan hill). This evening the Grosbeak was actively feeding in a Oak tree near this trail. It was last observed flying off with two smaller birds towards the northwest (distance undetermined). Re: [Ontbirds] Kirtland's Warbler - Toronto Islands
It should be clarified that the bird appears to be a first spring male. While it was first singing when discovered by Jeff Harrison early this afternoon, it was not singing at the time of our observation between 4:15 and 5:15 pm. At the latter time, it flew westwards from the Eastern Gap and gave a brief flight note. It did not appear to fly far. There are plenty of midges in the area where the warbler was feeding. As well as Scots Pine, it was seen habituating Black Willow and Cottonwood trees, sometimes rather high up, although it tended to stay at or below 5 m. from the ground. Good luck!
