To get to the harbour exit 401 (east of Bowmanville) on Mill St and proceed

[Ontbirds] Arctic Tern - Cobourg harbour

2016-06-28 Thread michael ferguson
At about 11 AM today Tim Logan and I bumped into an Arctic Tern at Cobourg
harbour on the east breakwater perched near a Common Tern. Flew west.

We located it again from the beach immediately west of the harbour, it was
fishing close to shore. Flew east.

Located it again at noon.with several Common Terns perched in exactly the
same spot on the east breakwater.

Presumably the same bird first found by Clive Goodwin as reported by
Margaret Bain some days ago, posted on eBird by Luke Berg June 23, though I
don't think it has been reported since.

I'll put a photo on eBird.

Beware, Cobourg harbour is a busy spot at the moment as preparations are
underway for what looks to be a big Canada Day event, rides, tents,
concessions, including the east pier...

[Ontbirds] Lapland Longspur - Oshawa (Harmony & Conlin)

2016-02-18 Thread michael ferguson
There haven't been many longspurs in Durham County this winter so I thought
I would post this. Charmaine Anderson found these birds yesterday afternoon.

Relocated them myself yesterday as the sun went down, returned this morning
with my scope to confirm. Bruce Aitkins stopped by for a look as well.

Yesterday afternoon at 5:30 PM there were 20+ Horned Lark, 20+ Snow
bunting, 2 Lapland Longspur.

This morning at 9:30 AM 50+ Horned Lark, 1 Snow Bunting, 2 or 3 Lapland
Longspur.

Harmony has an interchange with the 401 at east end of Oshawa, proceed
north on Harmony to Conlin (northern edge of new subdivision development
along Harmony), birds in the stubble field on NE corner, often in front of
large hay bale in front of farm buildings, often scattered through fields
on both E and W sides of road, sometimes on shoulder of Harmony Rd.

[Ontbirds] Second Marsh

2010-08-23 Thread michael ferguson
Sunday evening at Second Marsh:

Two fall warblers, Cape May along the marsh trail, Chestnut-Sided in the
open woods on the high ground between the marsh trail and the bay trail
(resident catbirds, flycatchers, waxwings, including numerous juveniles, and
kingbirds all busy at this spot as the setting sun broke out of the clouds).

The marsh viewing platform by the GM parking lot was especially interesting
between 7:30 and 8:00pm, the pelican on its usual perch across from the
platform, for the most part with its head under its wing (apparently not
here for the sightseeing), two egrets, two trumpeters, etc. At least 7
Black-Crowned Night-Herons put in appearances, 4 (singly, one pair) flew out
of sight to the south east, 3 perched in the willows at the south end of the
marsh eventually came one at a time up the marsh to settle out of sight at
various spots. Several times one or other night-heron flew past the viewing
platform quite close providing excellent views. Some small shorebirds on
distant lily pads but no scope...

At 7:45pm twelve Common Nighthawks appeared over the platform and hunted
insects for 10 or 15 minutes before disappearing again.

Directions:
Exit from the 401 at the Harmony Rd (exit # 419).
South on Farewell St. to Colonel Sam Drive.
East on Colonel Sam Drive to the GM Canada Headquarters.
Park in southwest corner of lot.

Re: [Ontbirds] American White Pelican- Oshawa

2010-07-03 Thread michael ferguson
Saturday July 2, Am. White Pelican on its usual log across the marsh from
the platform by the GM building, roosting and preening.

There is a gravel lane with a gated and locked entrance east end of the
bridge on Col Sam Dr, east side of the water treatment plant. The lane runs
up the west side of the marsh to the lake. We walked up that way to see if
there was a better view. Lots of wildflowers and butterflies along this
lane, swallows, kingfisher, empidonax flycatchers, downy w.p., numerous
swamp sparrows singing energetically, some good breaks for viewing terns,
swans, ducks, moorhen. Just before arriving parallel to the pelican's
roosting spot between noon and 12:30 pm the pelican took flight and flew
west along the lake shore. Great view as it headed past us.
