[Ontbirds] Black-headed Gull - Niagara

2019-11-29 Thread Amanda Guercio via ONTBIRDS
This afternoon at the river flypast at Nelson Park, we had an adult
Black-headed Gull in amongst a flock of Bonaparte’s Gulls at approximately
4:15. Also, at least 4 Little Gulls. Bonaparte’s numbers seem to be down
from yesterday with only about 2500 or so in the 45 minutes or so we were
there.

Nelson Park is at the end of Nelson Street in Niagara on the Lake.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Black-headed Gull -Niagara Whirlpool

2016-12-28 Thread Nate Miller
Hi folks,

The Black-headed Gull is still at the Niagara Whirlpool this morning. I
observed it flying and sitting on the water. Patience and a scope is
required to see it well.

Directions: Drive north from Niagara Falls until you see the whirlpool on
yoir right. Bird was actively flying mostly over the part of the pool to
the left of the aerocar.

Just a heads up for gull watchers on Niagara River this weekend..
This evening at 4:05, Jim Hopkins and I had a basic adult Black-headed Gull fly
by in a flock of Bonies. I haven't seen any reports of this species recently.

Cheers

[Ontbirds] Black-headed Gull - Niagara-on-the-Lake

2015-11-09 Thread Josh Vandermeulen
This evening, I observed an adult Black-headed Gull with a group of Bonaparte's
Gulls during my daily watch of the gulls flying out of the Niagara River, as
viewed from Queen's Royal Park in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Black-headed Gull
passed by with about 40 Bonaparte's Gulls at 5:07 PM.

Every evening thousands of Bonaparte's Gulls on the lower Niagara River gather
in small flocks and fly out to Lake Ontario to spend the night. Currently, the
flight gets going sometime after 4:00 PM and continues until well after dark.

I have been stopping by to observe this flight most evenings. Other highlights
tonight include a Bonaparte's Gull still sporting a full hood (present for at
least two weeks) and 4 Little Gulls (3 adult, 1 first winter).

Queens Royal Park is located at the east end of Regent Street in
Niagara-on-the-Lake. Exit from the QEW at Glendale Avenue north, and turn right
onto Glendale Avenue. Cross over the QEW and immediately turn left at York
Road. At the first set of lights turn right onto Airport Road. Take this north
for about 3 km until the first major road, which is Niagara Stone Road. Turn
right and take Niagara Stone Road to the end in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Turn
right on Queen Street and then your fourth left onto Regent Street. Parking is
in the lot there, and the river can be viewed from the hill.

Good birding,
Josh Vandermeulen
