[Ontbirds] Black-headed Gull - Niagara
This afternoon at the river flypast at Nelson Park, we had an adult Black-headed Gull in amongst a flock of Bonaparte’s Gulls at approximately 4:15. Also, at least 4 Little Gulls. Bonaparte’s numbers seem to be down from yesterday with only about 2500 or so in the 45 minutes or so we were there. Nelson Park is at the end of Nelson Street in Niagara on the Lake. Good birding! [Ontbirds] Black-headed Gull - Niagara-on-the-Lake
This evening, I observed an adult Black-headed Gull with a group of Bonaparte's Gulls during my daily watch of the gulls flying out of the Niagara River, as viewed from Queen's Royal Park in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Black-headed Gull passed by with about 40 Bonaparte's Gulls at 5:07 PM. Every evening thousands of Bonaparte's Gulls on the lower Niagara River gather in small flocks and fly out to Lake Ontario to spend the night. Currently, the flight gets going sometime after 4:00 PM and continues until well after dark. I have been stopping by to observe this flight most evenings. Other highlights tonight include a Bonaparte's Gull still sporting a full hood (present for at least two weeks) and 4 Little Gulls (3 adult, 1 first winter). Queens Royal Park is located at the east end of Regent Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Exit from the QEW at Glendale Avenue north, and turn right onto Glendale Avenue. Cross over the QEW and immediately turn left at York Road. At the first set of lights turn right onto Airport Road. Take this north for about 3 km until the first major road, which is Niagara Stone Road. Turn right and take Niagara Stone Road to the end in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Turn right on Queen Street and then your fourth left onto Regent Street. Parking is in the lot there, and the river can be viewed from the hill. [Ontbirds] Black-headed Gull - Niagara River
The highlight of my day birding with Jim Pawlicki was an adult BLACK-HEADED GULL in breeding plumage (full hood) on the lower Niagara River. We first saw the bird about 1:30 p.m. flying downriver and landing with a raft of Bonaparte's Gulls, from above the Lewiston (NY) boat ramp (the foot of Center St). Later, with Bill Watson, we had it foraging from the small parking lot at Artpark State Park right next to the river and the trail-heads. The conspicuous metal piece of art, which formerly one could walk on, is located about 100 yards downriver from this spot. This location is upriver from the Lewiston boat ramp, right about where the narrow section of the river ends. Birders looking from the Ontario side of the river can try the Queenston boat ramp - look upriver, to your right, for the spot where we had the bird foraging (or walk upriver from the boat ramp). Alternatively, try going downriver a mile or two to look for rafting Bonaparte's Gulls. Many of the Bonaparte's Gulls (a few thousand here) have varying degrees of incomplete black hoods but about 10% or so have relatively complete hoods. This might help to make relocating this bird a little easier. Also, in this area of the river were 8 LITTLE GULLS (probably more) and two immature ICELAND GULLS. Still plenty of LONG-TAILED DUCKS with their wonderful calls here. Elsewhere, Jim and I had a singing VESPER SPARROW on Hulbert Road in the Town of Wilson, NY. Looking out on Lake Ontario from home, we had 105 RED-THROATED LOONS, 3 COMMON LOONS, about a dozen RED-NECKED GREBES, a second basic GLAUCOUS GULL, and a pair of SURF SCOTERS, as well as many other species of ducks. Off of Fort Niagara State Park, I had three SURF SCOTERS, two adult males and one female. Around home lately, PINE SISKINS can be heard calling and singing all day. Today, Jim saw mate-feeding but as of yet, no stronger evidence of breeding has been detected. Good birding!
