[Ontbirds] Buff-breasted Sandpiper - Beeton Sod Farms - Fri Sept 6

2019-09-06 Thread Frank Pinilla (gmail) via ONTBIRDS
Hello Ontbirders,

Following up on John Schmelefske’s report of both American Golden-Plover and
Black-bellied Plover, I went to 10 Line NE of Beeton and found a Buff-breasted
Sandpiper with them the plovers (4 Golden, 3 Black-bellied). Scope is a must as
they are well back and on dark mud (sometimes coming out onto a grass strip
between tilled fields).

Good birding!

Directions:
10th Line exactly 1.2km west of 15th Sideroad in the Beeton - Tottenham area.
Heading north on the 400 from the GTA, exit at CR88 and go west, you can turn
north on 5th Sdrd, Hwy 27 or 15th Sdrd until you get to 10th Line and turn west
until 1.2km past 15th Sdrd.

[Ontbirds] Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Beeton Sod Farms Hwy 50

2014-09-04 Thread John Schmelefske
Did a drive around sod farms north of Beeton. Most fields pretty dry, or
recently plowed. I was somewhat surprised to find a buff-breasted sandpiper
on the east side of Hwy 50 about three kilometres south of Hwy 89. This was at
about 2:00 pm. The field in question is at mailbox 4270. Unfortunately the
field was in the process of being plowed under, but at least this is an
indication that there are buff-breasteds in the area. One concession east and
south of this spot is another productive area. The field in question is on the
southwest corner of 25th sideroad and the 7th concession. There were 77
american golden plovers, all adults in fading breeding plumage.

To reach the area where the buff-breasted was, go west on hwy 89 from Alliston
and turn south on Hwy 50. The correct field is at Mailbox 4270.

[Ontbirds] Buff-breasted Sandpiper - Beeton Sod Farms

2010-08-17 Thread John Schmelefske
At 9:30 this morning I had a Buff-breasted Sandpiper east of the Tottenham
Rd on the 11th concession near Beeton. There is standing water on both sides
of the road there. The Buff-breasted was at the far northern edge of a
recently harvested sod field. Also present were about 20 Black-bellied
Plovers and at least 2 American Golden Plovers.

Yesterday I saw Black-bellied, Golden and Semipalmated Plovers, Lesser and
Greater Yellowlegs, Least, Semipalmated and Baird's Sandpipers at this spot,
but the standing water that was there has mostly dried up. Plovers and a
Baird's Sandpiper were also present yesterda at the Zander Specialty Sod
Farm farther east on north side of the 10th concession between the 10th and
the 15th sideroads.

To get there go north from Hwy 9 or south from Hwy 89 on the Tottenham
Road. Count the concession roads until you get to the 11th concession and
turn east. Go about 700 metres and look to the north on a large de-sodded
field.

[Ontbirds]Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Beeton Sod Farms

2008-09-08 Thread JOHN SCHMELEFSKE
This morning at 9:00am I observed a Buff-breasted Sandpiper on the Beeton Sod
Farms with a flock of 66 Black-bellied Plovers. Also seen at the Zander
Specialty sod farm was 1 Black-bellied Plover.

The sod farms are on the South side of the 9th concession about one
kilometre west off the 15th sideroad. The field has recently been cleared. To
reach the area go north on
HWY 400. Take the Bond head cut off west and drive west to the lights in
Bond Head. Turn north on Hwy 27 and then left at the next lights onto
the Beeton road going west. In about 5 km take the 15th sideroad north to
the 9th.

The Zander specialty sod farm is one concession North of this site on the North
side of the 9th concession about one
kilometre west off the 15th sideroad. Do not approach from the other end of the
sideroad as the
bridge is under construction and the road is blocked.

2007-09-04 Thread dave milsom

The Buff-breasted Sandpiper is still on the same field at Sideroad 15
and 11th Line n. of Beeton, east of Tottenham. See in previous email
  below for Directions.
The bird blends in with the sand and can be elusive at times.
Also on the field were about 15 Golden Plover today. At least 3 were
  juveniles.
