[blackbelly] Newborns
My last twin newborns are still teeny tiny. All the other lambs are growing like weeds. I watched them for a while. Mom does let them just start nursing then moves them out of the way. For some reason she doesn't like them nursing. We put her in the stanchion but that doesn't do much good. She still uses her back legs to push them out of the way. Other than not letting them nurse much, she does seem to mother them. She keeps them away from the other sheep and other lambs. She talks to them, calls them to her. She likes to hide them behind the leanto we have in their little pen, then go and lay down out where she can be seen. Not sure what is going on with her. They are a week old today so they must be getting just enough to survive but nothing more. the last few days I have been giving them nutradrench twice a day and trying to bottlefeed. One finally is just starting to take the bottle real well. The other one still does not suck on the bottle at all. I squeeze the bottle to make him get some but he doesn't like it at all. When I let him down he runs to mom and wants to nurse but she pushes him aside, as usual. I have two ewes I cannot tell between, but I think this one is the ewe that did not let her lamb from last year even come up to her to nurse and I had to bottlefeed. Why would you want to do that? Mixing genetics of two relatively rare breeds removes one more chance for the ewe to [pass on her genetics to others of her 'kind.'
