Re: [Blackbelly] Ram w/swolen hock joints
Baytril is a prescription drug, meaning you can only get it from a veterinarian. It is labelled for use in beef cattle, dairy heifers under 20 mos of age, and swine. It is not currently approved for sheep or goats. A veterinarian who sells it to you for use in non- approved food animals is taking a risk with their license, so I think you may have some trouble getting ahold of it. There are other good antibiotics you could use that are approved in sheep (Naxcel for instance). Since you've already had a vet involved in this case, why not contact them again with your concerns and ask if another round of antibiotics would be a good idea. If they agree, they can prescribe an appropriate one for this ram and you won't have to look further. Re: [Blackbelly] Ram w/swolen hock joints
I get Baytril in ElReno at Eischen's vetconsulting service. You should be able to get it from the vet. The small animal size is expensive, but it is really good when youdo not know just what you are dealing with. I use antibiotics as a last resort, but if I need them, I use penn and baytril if I can't really diagnose the problem. There was some rumours about Baytril being taken off the market for meat animals, but it is still used in hogs, so there is really no problem. Since this guy has had so much stress I would give him a dose of Panacur wormer for good measure. It is easy on the gut and worms really take over during stress. I found that out by accident when one had pneumonia. When I have one that is acting sick, the first thing is panacur oral.. Good luck. I am not an expert at Joint Ill, but it appears to be an arthritic type disease that is usually caused by a staph organism. Anti inflammatory injections can cause the immune system to be somewhat compromised. Especially cortisone. I would discontinue the pain meds as I am assuming it is banamine. As I stated earlier, I would keep him on pennicilllin and if necessary a shot of Baytril for a couple of days. I would also give him Alfalfa hay when he is in the pen. It can work miracles sometimes... Cecil in OKla ___ This message is from the Blackbelly mailing list Visit the list's homepage at %http://www.blackbellysheep.info

It sounds like "joint ill" to me... it's supposed to be a lamb thing, but in principle an animal of any age could come down with it(especially if he was immune compromised at some point). You should call your vet and find out how to diagnose, and what the prognosis is. Re: [Blackbelly] Ram w/swolen hock joints
It sounds like a staph infection. I would use combiotic or pennicillin instead of the LA 200.. Terramycin has a tendency to get into every body tissue and stay there. About 2cc of pennicilin every other day for about 10 days should show some improvement. Exercise on those feet will get the circulation moving and make the swelling go down.. Could be a kidney infection also, and the pennicilin will take care of that.. Cecil in OKla What has anyone seen or done to help w/swollen hocks that were a result of infection. Re: [Blackbelly] Ram w/swolen hock joints
Hi Oneta, I do not know if what I have to say applies to your situation. I had a lamb that had its hock joint torn open (I assume a dog bite) to the point you could see bone. I don't remember giving it LA-200 but might have done that in the beginning. What saved the little guy was flushing the wound with hydrogen peroxide daily and then filling the wound with penicillin G procaine as a dressing. I used a syringe without the needle and would pump the hydrogen peroxide into the wound inflating the leg. Then I would work the infected puss out and repeat the procedure. When the hydrogen peroxide came out clean I would put in the penicillin and leave it. The lamb was nicknamed 3-legger and was nearly impossible to catch! 3-legger actually became a 4-legger again and you couldn't tell he had ever been hurt. A word of caution on LA-200. I have had serious problems using LA-200 for long term treatment. I use LA-200 for initial antibiotic treatment routinely for the first two days. I then back off and see if the lamb can do without it. If the LA-200 isn't effective I use the penicillin. At three weeks I would definitely not be giving any pain killer. Many pain killers lower the immune system allowing infection to either linger or grow. If he starts eating normal stop the vitamin B shots. I like the probios idea. I know nothing about absorbine. If possible get him to walk and work the leg. I have found injured and sick rams start feeling "much better" when they get to run with some ewes. It may be that it is just going to take more time before the hock will look normal again. Hope I helped, Mark Wintermute Subject: [Blackbelly] Ram w/swolen hock joints I have a question regarding my ram that has been sick.
