Re: [Blackbelly] Resheep & cows milk

Julian,

Nothing wrong with fresh goats milk. Only difference is it does contain more
fat soluble vitamins and vitamin C than ewe milk.

Actually, it's not uncommon to give goat kids cow milk, to break the disease
transmission cycle for CAE/CL. You would ideally use milk from a breed that is
high in butterfat, like a Jersey.

Goat milk is much better than milk replacer... I've never had a lamb or kid
raised on replacer do as well as one raised on milk.

Re: [Blackbelly] new member

2008-09-29 Thread Bonnie Chandler
I just wanted to say "Hi! I'm a new member." I live in Massachusetts and
have only one American Blackbelly ewe at the moment, but I also have a lot
of Nigerian dwarf goats, a few Shetland sheep, and a llama to watch over
them. At present I am looking for a young ram to breed my ewe to (my sources
from the past two years, when she produced only ram lambs, seem to have
dried up) and I hope eventually to get ewe lambs from her to increase my
flock.

Hello, I recently had someone ask me if a lamb can be raised on cow milk.
I
had to say I don't know but will find out. Any ideas? I would worry about
copper since cows ingest so much in their mineral etc. Thanks for the
input
Nancy

I would worry even more about Johne's disease, since most cows aren't
tested

for it and many have it and it is not killed by pasteurization.

Hey Nancy,

Cows milk is a no-no. The protein / fat ratio is not suitable for lambs. Goats
milk is better, and milk replacer for lambs even better.
