Re: [Blackbelly] Livestock guard dogs

Hi Curtis,
I am guessing you were talking about Maremma Sheepdogs as a guardian dog.
They are wonderful with young lambs but not trustworthy until they are about
a year and half old. This is pretty much true of all breeds. While they
are puppies and teenagers the dogs have a tendency to PLAY with real young
kids or lambs. Sometimes they play them to death not meaning to. So you
don't let them be with youngsters. My old Anatolian never chased lambs or
kids when young but if one got close or heaven forbid bump into him, he
would knock it down and growl at the lamb. He never drew blood - not sure
why not because the critter thought it was being killed. He is still grumpy
at 12 years old. No predator has ever killed or maimed any of my stock in
12 years.

Good luck,
Rhonda in TX

I ran across an article by the us dept of ag detailing guardian dogs. It
also had a lot of good advice for training a good guard dog and the
qualities to look for. Another of the things memtioned is that Anatolian
dogs have to be watched carefully. According to the article, they mature
slower than Pyrenees and are rougher with sheep, sometimes causing injury
and death. I have never dealt with that particular dog breed, so I take
these claims with a grain of salt. My focus is finding a dog that will
protect my sheep, mainly the lambs, from predation from coyotes, not be a
cause for livestock loss. I've also heard good things about some about
mammen (sp?) but hav only recently heard of the breed. Thanks again for
all of the advice and support.
