[blackbelly] sick lamb

2006-05-24 Thread Nancy Richardson
When we have one with pneumonia our vet has us give for a normal size lamb 1
cc pen G , 1/2cc excenel and 1/2cc of a clear liquid that is for congestion
but I don't know what that is. Right now I am dosing a preemie size and
doing 1/2 dose of each. The whole thing is given 1 time a day and on the
second does only the excenel and the clear. This is done for 3 - 5 days
depending on how bad the lamb is. If a lamb has a runny nose and coughs 1
day I start the next because the next day the runny nose stops and the
congestion will set in and you don't catch it soon enough. Also We give
probiotic and a little yogurt (1 or both) to help keep the good bacteria
going. And keep down the scours. Also at times I give 1/2 cc of Vitamin B
complex to help increase apatite and lower the stress of being sick. Hope
this helps give everyone ideas. Nancy - Mossys Springs

[Blackbelly] sick lamb

2009-04-05 Thread Nancy & Tom Richardson
Hello, I know my jacobs are different but I have a question about a sick
lamb perhaps someone may have seen in their balckbellies. He is a bottle
baby first of all. About a month old. The first 2 weeks of his life he ate
like a pig! now for the last 2 weeks I have been lucky to get 5 ounces of
milk every 6 hours down him. He has gotten a little skinny. He has Kent lamb
pellets, hay, mineral , baking soda and water all available and is in a pen
inside with others that are half his age and eat more than he. He shows no
real signs of eating hay, pellets etc. Any ideas? He doesn't have a snotty
nose or anything and when he does eat he sucks hard and excitiedly.. Any
help would be appreciated. Nancy my email off list is

Enema worked for Bam Bam (when he was alive). We had him isolated, so
we could easily tell if he was creating any output or not. If he went
more than 24 hours after eating with no poops, he'd get one. If he
ate little, but pooped little as well, he would not get one. After the
enema, he'd generally be hungry. He also got skinny as well, since he
literally was growing length-wise, but not gaining any actual weight.

Mark Wintermute is the expert on the enema subject.

If you look thru the archives, you can find the technique Mark taught me,

http://www.mail-archive.com/blackbelly%40lists.blackbellysheep.info/msg02354.html

I used a 5 or 8cc syringe and started with at least 10-15cc of veg.
oil, followed by water, for a total of about 35-45cc of fluid.

it might squirt out a bit after you press it in, but the time to stop
is when it truly gushes out.

it's messy to do, and I would suggest doing it outside, where it does
not matter.

Re: [Blackbelly] Sick lamb

2009-04-06 Thread Nancy & Tom Richardson
Our little sick jacob - Jerry - is pooping fine so no enama. When I do do
enamas I use warm soapy water. Seems to do a good job quickly and put
vasaline on the end of what is normally used as a wormer syrenge it is
bulbous at the end so it doesn't poke or tear skin. He is still not eating
well but Mark suggested perhaps pneumonia. I am going to try a mix of 1 1/2
cc pen and 1/2cc nuflor once a day for 3 to 4 days to see if I get any
improvement. Will keep everyone posted so if this happens again we all won't
be in the dark. Thanks for the help. Nancy
