[Blackbelly] bottle babies

2011-03-02 Thread Crystal Wolf

I have 2 bottle babies right now and the first one weighed 4.5 lbs and was a
bit week. She was rejected by her mom and so I decided to bottle feed her.
She too did not take much the first couple days but now she is 6 weeks old.
It was really cold when she born so we put a large dog kennel in the house.
Our floor is tile and pergo so we let her run the house but put her in the
kennel at night or if we were not in the house until she was 3 weeks old and
bouncing off the furniture.

I have better luck bottle feeding the lambs using human baby bottles and
nipples. I've had to make the hole larger in the nipple and I carefully
clip a hole that will allow the milk to flow but not drown the lamb. It may
take a few times to figure out how large to make the hole. You may have to
open her mouth to get th nipple in but after a few tries, she will get it.
I've have also used small syringes placed in the side of the mouth to get
lambs to eat especially new borns. I am using Sav A Lam milk replacer.
Both of my lambs did get a little loose but I just gave them 2 doses of
about 3 ml of Pepto Bismol and that worked really well. The little ram lamb
was rejected by his mom as well. After 2 days of tightly penning her, we
figured out she probably did not have enough milk for 2 lambs. He will be a
month old on Thursday and he too is growing like a weed, this little guy
gained 8 lbs in 3 weeks.

hope this helps along with all the info you have already received,

What led to the bottle babies?

Hi Dave,
The first of the bottle babies, Goober, was from a young ewe who
had twins but only wanted one. The second, Hercules, was born to
a ewe who had 3 in the night; we found one had been born dead and
one was unable to stand. His hind legs were splayed out to the
sides. He couldn't get any milk and by the time we got him fed
enough and strong enough to stand on his own his mama wouldn't take
him back. The best thing I saw this season was when his 1 year old
sister laid down with him to try to let him nurse. She did not
have any milk but has a great heart. The third bottle baby we found
down and weak, not sure who she came from or why she got left behind
but all are doing well now. That one is Annie Oakley.
My theory is, when I have a weak one that I can bring back, I give
them a really big name to live up to and they usually do. Last
seasons bottle baby is now a yard ornament named Peanut. He wasn't
weak, just rejected. He and Goober will be good buddies.
By the way, the count is up to 26 as of this afternoon.

Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Kathy Jack

[Blackbelly] bottle babies

Yes to Barbs love of her bottle baby.!!! I raise around 25 - 30 babies each
year. Some are blackbelly crosses and some jacobs but all are loveable. Alot
of them go to homes wanting pets etc. The ones we keep are certainly pest
according to my husband. He has trouble feeding since they are always under
foot thinking they should be feed by hand and then loved. They never want to
let him threw the gates with the truck without getting out and following him
to the house. As far as loosing lambs unexpectedly we did the same last
winter. My husband hung an uncut bale string over a fence. Next morning he
found a baby hanging there. Why it climbed up on the fence and got its head
in the string is unknown. We normally always cut the strings on the bales
and put them back in the truck but for some reason this one wasn't.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE OUT THERE! Nancy Tom

You know. I have had thin girls this year also. In fact I have one I am keeping
out and letting run with Baily (the wether that was last years bottle baby who
now thinks he is a dog) to get some wgt on her. I am feeding good grain, keep
mineral blocks out, both grass hay and alfalfa and then let them graze out with
the horses. Has been an odd year. I only had 1 ewe have problems and she had
twin still born rams. So far everyone else is doing good just thin. I would
be interested to know how many other bb owners are having odd things with the
herds.

Things run in cycles. and this must certainly be the year for bottle babies.
These low input BB girls are really pulling a runner, I too have had more
walk-away Moms this year. Never had this problem before.
I guess maybe (for us) it may be blamed on an extremely cold winter?
(when all else fails, blame the weather).
I have 6 bottle babies and have had 5 aborts/stillbirths.
A lot of my girls are on the thin side this year.
Chris.
