Re: [Blind-Computing] Audacity Transferring Cassette To PC Question
Hi Linda, Yes, many people have heard of Audacity, in fact both David and I have it on our websites. I don't see the connection between the software, and the scanner, but right now, that's neither here nor there . smile. If you are just wanting to record from an external source, such as a tape player, or record player, than any of the software mentioned on the list earlierwill certainly do the job. If you don't have any of it, you can download free from: The audio page at: www.blind-computing.com or the programs page at: www.jaws-users.com HTH, Richard Justice www.blind-computing.com - Original Message - From: "Linda" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Friday, June 29, 2007 8:28 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Audacity Transferring Cassette To PC Question My husband purchased a record player which came with software called Audacity to enable him to transfer records to disks. Have any of you ever heard of this software? He is not blind by the way. When he loaded it in, his scanner got really messed up and he couldn't use it. He called his scanner's customer support and for $25 they helped him fix it. I would be afraid to reload that software. Two questions: Can he use the same software to load records into the computer as tapes? And since I would like to be able to do the same thing with jaws what software is recommended? I am not interested in loading in speech or copying from four-track, but I need the easiest software I can get that will work well right now. Re: [Blind-Computing] [Blind-Computing A Web Site]C Question
Hi Linda, I haven't given up on the site altogether. I'm testing the latest release of Jaws version 8, and plan on returning to the site useing it. When I first visited the site, I was useing version 6.2, so I want to see if any of the fixes in version 8, will change the navigation experience. I do plan on commenting on their blog, in hopes of getting some feedback. When I have something new to report, I'll post it to the list. You are truly much more advanced a computer user than I am, and probably most everyone else on the list is too, so if it is possible for you to make some constructive suggestions to the web owner that would be very appreciated. I would have no idea what to suggest as to how the webmaster could set up things a little differently. I agree, diplomacy works. I did notice a link that said they are looking for people to hire for their site. Re: [Blind-Computing] Audacity Transferring Cassette To PC Question
Hello Linda, Have you been following the postings on GoldWave? GoldWave will work very well to record record albums and you can use the software too! It works very well as long as you have scripts for it. I am using it to record my albums with my record player. If I can be of any further help to you, please let me know. Hi, I tried this link and didn't seem to have any problems navigating the site. I did notice that after clicking on the link for the Q/A for instance, I had to tab one time and Jaws read the site as usual. I didn't however attempt to join this site for the field requirements. Re: [Blind-Computing] Audacity Transferring Cassette To PC Question
My husband purchased a record player which came with software called Audacity to enable him to transfer records to disks. Re: [Blind-Computing] Scheduler Thread podcast and rss agrigators
I have AVG as my virus protection program. Richard, thanks for your comments about www.pandora.com and I do appreciate your checking on there. And if they see that when the blind population uses their site it could benefit them too, that might make them more motivated. I did notice a link that said they are looking for people to hire for their site. [Blind-Computing] ADJUSTING RECORDING VOLUME IN GoldWave
Hi Lennie, I'll hold on to this. Thanks, Richard Justice www.blind-computing.com - Original Message - From: "Lennie Rinaldi" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Friday, June 29, 2007 2:16 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Transferring Cassette To PC Question Hi Rick and David, You are right. The tutorial do cover recording procedures, but if I remember, it only covers recording with a microphone. Below are the questions to Chris of GoldWave and his answers. I was asking him some basic questions on how to record LPs with GoldWave. The same procedures can be used for tapes. I think that the recording level should be properly set for a good recording. Incidentally, the output will be in WAV format which can be converted to MP3. If I can be of any further help with this particular subject, please contact me. I am still new at this though. Lennie Lennie wrote: Q: The question I have, is there any way that I can adjust the recording level when I set up my LPs? A: You can turn on the "Monitor input" option in GoldWave (press F11, Record tab). That will monitor the input levels even when you are not recording. If a screen reader is active, then the recording and playback levels are given numerically with the elapsed time and status. They are the percent values given at the end. You need to hold down the Ctrl key for a while to update the numerical levels, which are peak values. Releasing and pressing the Ctrl key again resets the values and scans for new peak levels. Adjust the volume level (press F11, Volume tab) so that the loudest peaks are about 90% to 95%. Chris Lennie wrote: Q: I still cannot hear any volume level when I play sound in line-in... A: Are you able to read the elapsed time and status? When you run GoldWave, two windows appear: the Main window and the Control window. The elapsed time is given on the Control window. Once focus is in the Control window, you can use the Tab key to move between the buttons, faders, and the elapsed time box. It should read "Stop 0.0 (0% 0%)". That is the status, elapsed time, and percent levels. Chris Lennie wrote: Q: However, I have the line-in volume set at 95 and the percentage in the control area showed a very low percentage like 16%. I do not see the relationship between the actual recording level between the two... A: Unfortunately that is normal. There is no exact relationship between the volume level setting and the actual input level because there are many variables. Holding the Ctrl key for a longer period of time may find higher peaks. Try playing the loudest part of the LP and holding the Ctrl key during that time. If the peak level is consistently lower than 50%, you'll need to increase volume levels either externally or in the program. To avoid distortion the level should never hit 100% or more. If you haven't done so, enable the "Monitor input" option (press F11, Record tab). That will allow you to scan the input level with the Ctrl key without having to start a test recording. Chris Lennie wrote: Q: I noticed that 0.0 is the elapsed time, but what is the difference between the first percentage and the second percentage? A: The first one is the left channel level and the second is the right. Q. When I hold the control key down, am I supposed to hear Jaws telling me anything or does it just change the peak and I have to get Jaws tell me the percentages? A: JAWS probably wouldn't tell you anything. When you hold the Ctrl key, GoldWave scans the input for the maximum amplitude and updates the percent levels. You'd have to make JAWS re-read the levels. Q. How do I tell when the peak is reached? You mentioned 90% - 95% A: The percent values are always the highest peak levels. In other words, they are the maximum levels that GoldWave could find while you where holding the Ctrl key. Whether or not they are the maximum peak levels of the entire song is a different question. You'd have to hold down the Ctrl key for the entire song to find those. After recording a song you could use the "Effect | Volume | Maximize Volume" command to scan the entire recording to determine what the peak values are, which might be easier than holding the Ctrl key for several minutes. Ideally the maximum levels should be above 0.9 but less than 1.0. Chris Lennie wrote: Q: I noticed that the highest reading at 58 was 54% in the right channel. Re: [Blind-Computing] Transferring Cassette To PC Question
Hi Rick and David, You are right. If you press Alt+F6, focus should change between the Main window and the Control window. Do that first. I think that what you are telling me is that is too low? Right? A: Right. If you can set the recording volume a bit higher, that would be better. Chris Lennie wrote: Q: You mentioned that the maximum should be above .9 but less than 1. Where do I find this information? A: When you use the Maximize Volume effect, the window displays the maximums as amplitudes and as dB in parenthesis in the "Current maximum" area. The Narrator accessibility accessory reads the values, so JAWS shouldn't have any trouble reading them too. After recording, the maximum should be around 0.9 for a good input volume level. It does not matter if it is a bit less, but it should not be 1.0. That would mean the input vol

Re: [Blind-Computing] Transferring Cassette To PC Question
Hi Lennie, You are correct, setting the volume wasn't specifically addressed on the list, but I believe it was covered in one of the GoldWave tutorials on the website. Thanks for sharing with the list, that's what makes this thing work so well. I look forward to hearing from you with your follow-up posts. Thanks, Richard Justice www.blind-computing.com - Original Message - From: "Lennie Rinaldi" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Friday, June 29, 2007 11:03 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Transferring Cassette To PC Question Hello David and Rick, I would like to add another thing about recording tapes and records to the PC. I have done a lot of recordings of my record albums and done one from my tape deck with another software called Dart XP. It is accessible with Jaws except for editing. I don't recommend it because it is more expensive and hard to use. That's why I prefer GoldWave. I am still in the process of learning to record with GoldWave, but I want to point out one important fact about recording music which was not mentioned here. You will have to set up the proper volume level for recording otherwise you may end up with distortion in the final output. I have not heard any tutorial on how to set up the recording level with GoldWave. The developer of GoldWave (Chris) has replied to my numerous questions on how to do this correctly. It is sort of time consuming and tedious. I in no way trying to discourage anybody from doing this. As soon as I can get a handle on the proper procedure to set up the volume level, I will share it with the group. I will follow up with another Email to the list some of the information that I received from Chris later today. Just trying to help. No you wouldn't need gold wave at all if all you plan on recording are mono voice files, unless of course you wish to do some editing like breaking them up in to smaller files. It can be done in gold wave by hitting F11 and arrow over to the volume tab and then adjust your line input settings. Mine is at 20%. Then you'll need a really long wire or a wireless connection. All I did was disconnect my tape deck in the living room and bring it in here for the time required for recording. Now when I'm done this time around I'll return it to the living room or back on the shelf beside me because to be honest I don't have many tapes left to play as most of them along with my albums are now on CD. An example of this could be a direct audio output from a VCR, or stand-alone cassette deck. This is usually not a problem with portable cassette recorder/players. Just make sure that you match the cable to the type of player, i e, mono for mono, and stereo for stereo. Example: If you are recording from a stereo player, and you use a mono cable, you will only be getting one channel. As David has mentioned, how and what you intend to record will determine the software required for the job. Example: If you are going to recordan NLS tape for instance, there are two ways of doing this. 1. If you are going to record from a 4-track player such as those used for Talking Books, a simple audio recording program will do, but you will need to record each track as if you wer listening to the tape. 2. If you want to play the tape as a 2 track tape in the same recorder, or use another 2-track recorder, then you would use a program such as GoldWave to seperate, and reverse the tracks. Something worth mentioning here, if you are recording in mono such as lectures or someone just reading a book, then you do not need to record in stereo, and you should use a reduced sample rate, to minimize the size of the file. David can comment further on this as he has more experience with it than I. I would recommend listening to the audio tutorials for GoldWave on the audio page at: www.blind-computing.com These are very good tutorials and easy to follow. If you need more help, let us know. You need a cassette recorder that will accomodate the type of cassette, i e, 2 track or 4 track. You will need a patch cable from the player/recorder to your sound card on your computer. You can pickup one of these at somewhere like Radio Shack, and depending on your particular equipment, it may need to be an atenuated patch cord to avoid overdriving the soundcard And last but not least, you will need recording software such as GoldWave, for the recording, and plenty of hard drive space. [Blind-Computing] transfering cassettes to disk
There is a very important step in this process which I don't recall seeing mentioned as of yet. If you are recording a 4 track tape on to your system remember that the right channel will play backwards after the initial recording. This is why you need an audio editor and not just a simple recording program. You will need a program that can separate the 2 channels and manipulate them independently reversing the right channel so it plays correctly. This is why a program like sound recorder or even possibly CDEX wouldn't fill the bill. The cable you will need must have a plug that goes in to your system's sound card and on the other end 2 plugs to insert in to your stereo tape deck. Naturally if you're recording a tape of music that you got from a store the above steps will not be required at all. Re: [Blind-Computing] podcast and rss agrigators
There are at least 3 I can think of right off the top. Golden Ear, also 2 versions of the accessible pod catcher. They can all be found on my site and I believe up on Rick's as well. Re: [Blind-Computing] [Blind-Computing A Web Site]C Question
Hi Jeffrey, To say that the input fields can't be seen by Jaws isn't entirely correct. I visited the site, and was able to see the input fields, and actually enter a user name and password. Now, granted, it didn't recognize me as a member, since I'm not signed up, but never-the-less, I was able to access the input fields. As far as screen-reader accessibility, the site leaves much to be desired, and as far as a website goes it leabves much more to be desired. For those who are interested in pursueing the site, I would suggest going to the site, clicking the link for their blog, and posting comments about the lack of accessibility for sign-up and navigation. Keep in mind that a little diplomacy when making comments or suggestions of the site developer, will go a long way. I looked at this site with Jaws 6.2. Neither the PC or Jaws cursor can see the input fields needed to run the site. It's a real pity too, because when I have had my sighted friends use the site, it's very enjoyable. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ricque Sent: Friday, June 29, 2007 1:47 AM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] [Blind-Computing A Web Site]C Question Hi Linda, We'll see if we can get a look at it. Richard Justice www.blind-computing.com - Original Message - From: "Linda" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Friday, June 29, 2007 1:25 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] [Blind-Computing A Web Site]C Question Linda here. I recently learned of a web site called www.pandora.com which allows you to create your own radio station. It is free. Actually, you can create up to a hundred of them. I will tell you about this site, but my question is, how do I use it with jaws? So far I have had to have help. When you create a radio station you name an artist, and the site will put that artist on, as well as other artists with the same type of style. You have the option to say thumbs up on that song, or I don't like that song, or play this song in a month because I'm tired of it. I would really like to know if it is possible to navigate this site. Also, it is possible to let friends hear your radio stations from their computers. After about five minutes of initial playing the music will stop and ask you once for your email address and password, which never have to be entered again if you are accessing the site from your own computer. It is possible to access the site from anywhere though. It is really quite amazing how they can match the styles. Sometimes there is a mismatch, but not very often. I really would like to learn if we can navigate this site. Thanks to anyone who tries and responds.
