2007-07-11 Thread Frederick
Hi
Actually, I was pleased with Norton's 2006. I just wish I could get
past this screen on Norton's 2007 and things would probably be well.

God bless,

Hi,
If you are talking about the key on the keyboard next to the scroll lock,
that key is sometimes referred to as the Break or as JAWS calls it the Pause
key.

[Blind-Computing] Nortons questions

2007-07-11 Thread Frederick
Hi
I liked my Norton's 2006 security so I went ahead and upgraded to the 2007
version. Now when I open the Norton's program like I need to when I run a scan
I am given a message saying the program needs to finish being configured. What
is it wanting from me? I
Next I went to the Norton's website and tried to use their tool that scans
and fixes ones troubles. It claims that I have something blocking active EXE
controls or that my JAVA is not up to date. How do I fix this so I can run the
tool?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Wireless keyboard advice needed.

2007-07-11 Thread John Justice
Albert, I posted a description of a wireless keyboard made by Logitek some
time ago. I'll bet it's on the archives. But I posted it to David's
JAWS-USERS list because it is very compatible with Jaws. As for the
distance you are requesting, the maximum distance for effective use of a
laser type wireless keyboard is about 30 feet. However, that is definitely
line of sight. If you superimposed a wall or some other obstruction, I'm
not sure how well it would work.
As an experiment, I carried the keyboard into our laundry room just now and
it wouldn't function at all.

Now Albert, here's something for you to consider. How about a WIFI setup?
If you set up your system with a wireless router, that has much more range
than any wireless keyboard. If you are using a laptop, you could go almost
anywhere in your home and use the system without trouble.
That is assuming you have a laptop and can set up a router like that.

Re: [Blind-Computing] KCONVERTING TEXT FILES TO VOICE FOR RECORDING

2007-07-11 Thread David Ferrin
I will need to look in to this question as a matter of fact. Especially
since I suggested text aloud to you in the first place. I picked it up last
fall but I don't recall running in to that issue yet, although to be fair
it's been a while since I have had the time to mess around with the program
very much. I do like it very much though I will say for the record.

I agree David. Although I am having one interesting problem. I did a batch
conversion from .rtf files to .mp3. In every case, the last few words of
the text were bitten off. I thought it was a fluke so I did it again and
got the same results. If anyone knows something about TextAloud, I sure
could use some pointers. I have also made a request for help from the
support group at nextup.com but they aren't very fast in responding to
requests for assistance.
I am sure that there's a solution but I don't know what it is just yet. If
anyone can shorten this trip for me, I'd appreciate that.
All in all though, I like TextAloud and it does exactly what I want it to
do.
For the recorde, the "biting off" process seems to occur when you convert
to .mp3.
When the file is read directly, that doesn't happen.

Increased speed and performance are the two main improvements since
upgrading my RAM. So yes I have noticed a considerable improvement in
speed. Thanks for asking.

Is it really true that Jaws will not work with a 64 bit operating system?

I was told that I can not use Jaws with a 64 bit Vista ultimate.

Re: [Blind-Computing] ViewPoint

2007-07-11 Thread Ricque
Hi Lennie,
The reason I un-installed it, is that I have other media players that I know
are accessible with Jaws, so I had no need for that one.
I may have actually looked at it at one point, but it's been so long, I
can't say for sure.
And my guess would be, that judgeing from the name, it could be a video
player.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for that information. I am wondering though. Being that
ViewPoint is a media player, is it used specifically for video? If
this is true, then I am assuming that what is being displayed are
advertisements? If that's the case, then I will get rid of it.

Thanks for your help.

If you knew the actual ascii character code of that character, you can use
the alt + numpad numbers combination to type any character, or if you use
Jaws, you can use Ins. + 4 on the number row to 'type' a special character,
but not sure if that includes the checkmark as such.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Check mark

2007-07-11 Thread Jacob Kruger
If you knew the actual ascii character code of that character, you can use
the alt + numpad numbers combination to type any character, or if you use
Jaws, you can use Ins. + 4 on the number row to 'type' a special character,
but not sure if that includes the checkmark as such.

Hi Larry,
Interesting question!
I take it you want to insert this into some type of document?

Re: [Blind-Computing] links & popups

2007-07-11 Thread Mohammed Al-shar'
hi there.

here's what I do when I get this: press alt + n to go to the information
bar. it will tell me that a popup has been blocked. I press the application
key and get different options, you'd want to highlite and click the option
that says "allow popup". that's it.

all the best

Subject: [Blind-Computing] links & popups

Greettings:

I went to Freedom Scientific with the intent of using the Serfs Up
tutorial to gain more knowledge of the internet when using JAWS. I was
instructed to
click on a link called Jims Café at inisport.

Every time I did that I heard a popping sound on the screen but the new
window did not open. I have encountered this problem on other links.
My wife says
it is because of pop-ups. She can click on the link with the mouse and
it works as it should. I have tried with pop-up blocker on and off and
get the
same results, no window. I have tried using the left mouse button with
the same results.

Any help would be appreciated.

For interests sake, what happens if you use a combination of shift + enter?

That would open the url in a new window.

Not really gonna work around the actual problem, but just wondering.

Cheers

[Blind-Computing] THE SURF'S UP CHALLENGE FROM FREEDOM SCIENTIFIC

2007-07-11 Thread Ricque
I went to the page this morning, and didn't have any problems useing Jaws
6.2.
I did notice however, some tips for useing the challenge with Jaws a little
further down the page.
Below is the information as it appeared on the page.
HTH,
Richard Justice
www.blind-computing.com

Windows XP Setup Information

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2, you may need to reconfigure
Internet Explorer to work more smoothly with Surfing the Internet with JAWS.
These steps prevent Internet Explorer from displaying the Information Bar
and blocking content on certain of these pages.

Tip: To see if you have Service Pack 2 installed on your computer, press
WINDOWS Key+BREAK and read the information that displays. If Service Pack 2
is
not installed, you do not need to perform the rest of these steps.

To reconfigure Internet Explorer for use with Surf's Up - Surfing the
Internet with JAWS, do the following:
List of 7 items
1. Open the Tools menu, select Pop-up Blocker, and press RIGHT ARROW.
2. Choose Turn Off Pop-up Blocker and press ENTER.
3. From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options.
4. Press CTRL+SHIFT+TAB to move to the Advanced tab.
5. Press A until you select Allow active content to run on files in My
Computer.
6. Press the SPACEBAR to select the check box for this item.
7. Press ENTER to close the dialog box and save your changes.
list end

You can repeat these steps to restore your previous settings.
