[Blind-Computing] OCR scanning with MS Office, was RE: Re Fast Scanner
Hi. Thanks for all the suggestions. I was able to scan and then save to MS Word following the instructions given. However, I've noticed a problem that I don't know how to get beyond. I'm scanning pages that are from a textbook. On the paper I'm scanning from, the main text is on the left of the page, and to the right is some other text such as outlines and definitions. But once I save it to Word it blends the text that is to the left and right together and it's all jumbled. So, in the middle of several sentences in the main text, the text that was to the right is put in. How can I keep text from blending like that? And if there are photos and diagrams on a page I'm scanning, won't that b a problem as well? Thanks. Chris Feist - The one and only! -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of David Griffith Subject: [Blind-Computing] Re Fast Scanner Dear Chris Microsoft Document Imaging does initially like all software scan as an image. However you simply go to the Tools menu within Document Imaging and select "send text to Word". This is the case in Office 2003 and I suspect this is true in other versions. You wil get a message asking you to confirm you want to send all pages. Simply press enter and Word will open with your scanned text. For some reason this is always a htm document but as I say I simply use save as in file menu to create a RTF version. You can use Jaws to read either the HTM or RTF version just fine. So yes you can scan and OCR right now without buying software. What's more to the point is that the OCR is actually better than any of the software I have bought in my experience. I have not used Open Book but have used Kurzweil Omnipage and Text Bridge. The key I have found to using Document Imaging is to ensure that you select the scanner driver that came with your scanner, in my case Canon, rather than the inbuilt generic driver that comes with Microsoft Document Imaging. The Microsoft driver can OCR just as well but features such as duplex scanning are best managed within the drivers provided by your scanner. Let me know if you need help with this and I will look up what I did to ensure this. Hope that helps. Re: [Blind-Computing] Restoring Video Driver
Hi Al, Check to see if you have an entry in the programs list in the start menu, for system recovery. There may be a selection there to restore drivers. Usually, this can be done from the recovery partition if your system has one. There are usually options to only re-install certain components, without re-installing the entire system. Outside of that, visit the video manufacturer's website, and download a new set of drivers for your display. Optionally, you could un-install the display adapter, and let Windows re-detect it on re-boot, and re-install the drivers. When dealing with video, or display issues, most certainly you will be without Jaws, but Narrator can be used to re-install the video intercept. In the run dialogue, the the following: msconfig when the utility opens, you will need to go to the startup tab, and then arrow thru the list of programs. [Blind-Computing] Re Fast Scanner
Dear Chris Microsoft Document Imaging does initially like all software scan as an image. Re: [Blind-Computing] Navigating Windows Live Messenger
Hmm Chris, seems you're having a few issues with Windows Live Messenger that I'm not. For example, in a conversation, I can press F6 to move from the history window to the input field and back. I should stress though that by default some annoying toolbars will be displayed by default. So you may want to turn them off. This can be found from the tools menu, under show toolbars. Hope that helps. Chris, the contacts list should gain focus when you sign in, so I'm not sure what's happening here.
