Re: [Blind-Computing] external hard drives
Victor, Thanks for all of the information. I greatly appreciate all of the good advice. You covered several points I wondered about. I will keep your words of wisdom handy. What is your opinion of www.newegg.com? Do you have another site that would prove to be better? I live in the United States. Re: [Blind-Computing] external hard drives
Hi Tammy, I am also in the market for an external drive, and have found some things you should look out for when shopping for these monsters. First is to look at what kind of interface it has. USB is the common one, but some models will also come equipped with a Firewire cable, and even some will come with an RJ45 jack, which means it can be connected to the network and used as a network drive. Secondly, you'll want to look at the rotation speeds of the disk, sometimes measured in RPM's. The standard is 7200 rpm's. Anything below that is tantamount to very slow access. Thirdly, and I think this is most important, is the read/write speeds and the transfer speeds, usually measured in megabytes per second. There is really no standard for this, and some retailers will sometimes try to fool you into thinking that the higher the transfer speed, the faster you'll get data on the drive. While this can sometimes be true, the fact is that the read and write speed is more important than the transfer speed, as the transfer will have to wait while the data is being read or written. The transfer speed may be referring to the transfer rate of the cable or connection, and not necessarily the drive itself. One drive I found was boasting a transfer speed of 480 mbps, but the read/write speed was abyssmally slow. An example I can cite is a electronics' chain here in Toronto called Future Shop. They were selling a 500 Gb external hard drive for 99 dollars. Once I saw that, my mouth fell open, as I couldn't believe the price, until I saw the read and write speeds, about 27 and 25 mbps, reading and writing, respectively. While this seems high, try to remember that the mbps stands for megabits per second, not to be confused with megabytes per second, as most people commonly see it as. What shocked me was the fact that it still said an rpm of 7200, which should not support that kind of read write speed, but then I realized what might be slowing the read write speeds up, and that leads me into the last point I want to make. Circuitry... You can have the most expensive hard drive in there, but if the enclosure stinks to high heaven, then that really expensive drive means absolutely nothing. The circuitry must come with a cache of some kind, and some kind of power switch, as this will control how long the hard drive lasts. Continuously keeping the drive on will shorten the lifespan of the drive. Although it has not been proven to shorten it's lifespan dramatically, it does shorten it nonetheless. So this is what I think you should look out for, and I hope this helps in some way. [Blind-Computing] Problems Uninstalling DECtalk Access 32
Hello everyone, I am using JAWS 8.0 on the computer in question. I have the GW Micro version of DECtalk Access 32, version 4.6. When I try to uninstall it, even though my floppy disk is in the external floppy drive and the floppy drive is connected, I get a message saying that the computer can not find the floppy disk, and asks if I want to proceed with the uninstall anyway. I selected "yes", and uninstalled DECtalk Access 32 with the copy protection still on the computer. I am wondering about a couple of things: 1. I know the Copy Protection is still on the computer. Is there a way I can find it and copy it back to the floppy disk manually? 2. If I reinstall DECtalk on said computer, things are already authorized. Is it possible for me to perhaps remove the program and the copy protection to a flash drive or other external device? 3. What about using a blank floppy disk? Might the disk be my problem? 4. Basicly, is there any way for me to get the copy protection back onto the disk so I can install it on my new laptop? Re: [Blind-Computing] external hard drives
Hi Tammy, I would recommend either a Maxtor, or Seagate model. Shop carefully, these days, you can get a 500gb, or 1tb drive at very reasonable prices. You should be able to pickup a nice drive for about fifty cents per gb. Keep this in mind, that if it is advertised as a 500gb model, you will not have that much actual storage capacity on the drive due to the difference in how the marketers and Windows calculate the drive space. I arrowed down and continued to read document names in My Documents. I entered on the document name again and nothing happened that I was aware of. I decided to alt tab to see if it had opened without me knowing it. Well, it did. It gave me the message that the document was not available and gave options to make it a read only file. I had problems closing the document too. Would anybody have any clues how to resolve this? I have never seen this happen before. Thanks in advance. Smile! GOD loves you! [Blind-Computing] 'Copying' a network connection over from one machine to another
I know it sounds a bit strange, but anyway, waht it comes down to is that although I've had basically the same internet connection set up on both my machines, and I take turns plugging the network cable into one then the other, the one now seems unable to actually access the internet although it can still ping the router, and also sometimes seems able to ping IP addresses as well, but, obviously, the DNS stuff isn't working like it should, and for some or other reason, although they were both using DHCP to automatically find the necessary DNS server, I can now no longer set it to use that option on the one machine, and even if I then go and manually enter two DNS server IP addresses into the TCP/IP settings dialogue, it still doesn't seem able to resolve hostnames etc., so I was just wondering if there's anything likely to be simple that I need to 'fix', or alternatively, if I just trash that network connection, could I just copy the working one over from the other machine, or would I need to reconfigure it on the 'broken' machine? Also, do you think it's likely to work if I create a new connection if this one isn't working? (along these lines, if I hook it up to the old dial-up connection, it does in fact seem to work fine) Hope this isn't a bit too technical for this list, and thanks in advance Jacob Kruger Blind Biker Skype: BlindZA '...Fate had broken his body, but not his spirit...'
