Re: [Blind-Computing] Firewalls

2008-01-20 Thread Tony Hernandez
Hi.

Someone correct me if I'm misinformed, but the windows firewall only blocks
incoming stuff, not outgoing. You're better off with a third party firewall
package like Sygate.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Deleting All Messages on One Subject

2008-01-20 Thread Tony Hernandez
HI Linda.

I assume you're using Outlook Express. If you are, here is what you do.

1. From the main window of Outlook Express, type alt+v for the view menu.
2. Your first item will be current view. Press enter in it. This will put
you in a submenu.
3. The item highlighted now will be "show all messages". Arrow up once to
get to the item called "group messages by conversation. Press enter on
that.
4. You'll notice now that when you arrow up and down the message list and
come to a message subject that contains more than one email, you will here
Jaws say "collapsed." This is because it has sort of turned your list into
a kind of treeview. Don't worry; this is a good thing for your purposes.
5. Use the right arrow key to expand a given subject, and the left arrow
key to collapse it.
6. Once you collapse a given subject, or if you didn't expand it to begin
with, then you can just hit the delete key to erase the entire thread. It
will ask you to confirm this, but you can tab through that and check the box
that will make that confirmation go away for future deletions. Then you can
click the ok or yes button. (I forget which one it is.)

This feature is a tremendous time saver for me. I love it because I'm a
very busy man, and I need to be able to zip through numerous emails if the
subject line is not of interest to me. If this was helpful to you, please
let us know.

Could you tell me what type of computers you are trying to connect? Are they

laptops or desktops? If they are laptops do they have wireless adapters
built in or plug-in cards? Also, what type of Internet connection do you
have? Is it dial-up, cable, or DSL?

What you need is at least in part depend on what you already have. If you
could give me a run-down of what you have and what you would like to do then

I can give you a push in the right direction.

Take care,

Re: [Blind-Computing] Braille Note or Best Small Machine for DoingBraille Proofreading

2008-01-20 Thread Denny Huff
You might want to check out the Braille Star 40. It is a 40 cell Braille
display and can either be connected to your PC or used independently with
it's own battery. The files can easily be transferred from your PC to the
Braille Star for mobility or you can use it while attached to your PC.
This unit is offered by Human Ware.
I think it runs around $5,000.00.

Hi!
I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion about the best unit to purchase
which I could use for having files transmitted to me over the internet to
enable me to proofread them and make corrections of errors. I need it to be
the type which will let me know what cell a line starts on. For example,
some paragraphs may erroneously start at cell 2 instead of cell 3, etc. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I am wondering how many hours a person can use a machine like this to
read braille comfortably. I have never used one before. I may proofread
for hours at a time.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Braille Note or Best Small Machine for DoingBraille Proofreading

2008-01-20 Thread Annette
Depending on what all you need to do when you are proof reading, you might
want to compare note takers to a braille display. If you need to make the
edits and want to accomplish your task away from the computer, then a note
taker is what you will need to consider. If you are not going to need to do
the editing away from your computer, then you might want to consider a
braille display that connects to your computer. I believe that there is at
least one braille display model that you can download the files to,
disconnect it from your computer and take it with you to read anywhere. It
runs on a rechargeable battery.

If maintaining formatting in a file that you are proof reading is important,
then you will really need to look closely at your note taker options.
Sometimes when you transfer a file from your computer to a note taker, the
file formatting is stripped from the file.

The braille display for the PacMate can be taken off of the PacMate and
connected to your computer. However, the PacMate is larger then some other
devices on the market. A few years ago when my job provided me with a note
taker, I selected the PacMate because the learning curve was smaller since
it used the same keystroke in many cases as JAWS on my computer.

I have not kept up with the note takers on the market and cannot comment
specifically on what is currently available.

HTH,
Annette

Where do you get Sigate Sara? I have AVG, but don't know if I have a fire
wall or not. We do have a wireless router, and I was assuming it would have
a fire wall in it. I never put my charge card on the computer, but my
husband does on his. And he has never had a problem.

Re: [Blind-Computing] About Finding New Groups

2008-01-20 Thread Linda
I am wondering if someone, or someones, can tell me how I can do a search of
different groups to find one I am hoping exists. My interest is in finding
a group whose focus is on how to stretch your dollar. Surely there must be
a group like this in existence because there are many people who want to
know how they can make their money go farther. I am not necessarily
thinking of investment opportunities, but ways to save on spending.

If anyone knows of a group like this, would you please tell me?

But I am still interested in knowing how I can search through the various
yahoo groups, etc. I have not signed up with yahoo in any way.

If you tab around that Virus Vault dialogue, if you actually get to the
listing of the threats, I think you can then simply use the delete key to in
fact remove them.

Re: [Blind-Computing] wireless connections

2008-01-20 Thread Joseph Lee
Hi there,
You'll need:
* A wireless router (the best ones I know are
from Linksys, Dlink and Netgear). Most
routers support 802.11ong (some newer ones
support 802.11tion).
* WiFi component (either a USB dongle or a
built-in WiFi chip).
I think this is suffice for this post.
There is a handy wizard called "Wireless
Network Setup Wizard" under XP Service Pack
2. Under Vista, it would be under "Network
and Sharing Center" under Control Panel.
Cheers,
Joseph

[Blind-Computing] wireless connections

2008-01-20 Thread Lou
Hi all I want to set up wireless connection between two computers and need
some help with this project. I have no idea where to start could someone
give me ideas on what kind of hard ware to buy for starters? After that I
will need help in setting things up. I also want to be able to use my
Braille plus on this wireless connection. Do any of you know if I will need
anything to do this other than what will be on the computers and the Braille
plus?
Thanks for the help.

Re: [Blind-Computing] trivia game

2008-01-20 Thread Jacob Kruger
When most of the KitchenSinc games are 'installed' I don't know if they
create shortcuts as such, so, using Windows Explorer, browse to C:\program
files\Kitchensinc, and if it wasn't put into a subfolder, simply look for
trivia.exe by typing tr and then arrowing down till you find it.

Then use the context menu key (or shift + F10), arrow down to 'send to',
right arrow, then arrow down to 'desktop create shortcut', and hit enter.

Then use the Windows key + M combo to go to the desktop, and type SH until
it focuses on something along the lines of 'shortcut to trivia.exe', Ctrl +
X to cut it to the clipboard, and then browse to wherever your games folder
is, enter it, and hit Ctrl + V to paste it there, then, if you want to, use
the F2 key to be able to rename it.
