Re: [Blind-Computing] Access 2003 and JAWS?

2008-03-14 Thread Jacob Kruger
Well, FWIW, just looked in the Jaws 9 help under the popular applications
section, and there's a topic related to Access under Microsoft applications,
and they specifically reckon it's related to 2000 - 2007 versions.

Re: [Blind-Computing] having trouble signing in to my hotmail account

Hi, Hotmail is not recommended for personal email unless you use something
like Windows Live mail, which is a desktop email client. However, it only
works correctly with JAWS 9.

hi sarah,

That will depend on which hardware your using. in my case, I have a machine
which came with windows xp home edition. I wanted to upgrade it to xp pro,
but after my sighted friend and i performed the clean install, there was no
sound. It finally turned out that the sound drivers and the drivers for USB
2 support needed to be installed. So, to cut a long story short, it will
totally depend on the make of your hardware.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Buying a new laptop

2008-03-14 Thread Hi-Tech Tarheel
My biggest advice is to spend as much as you can for RAM memory. Vista is a
hog for memory and it will make your JAWS experience much better. I
recommend 2 gigs. Just an FYI, if using Windows you can only use 3 gigs of
memory, unless you got Vista64 (don't do it!).

Thanks,

An OEM copy of Windows XP is a full version with most drivers that you'll
need. The hardware between Mac and PC is basically the same. Typically you
will want to check manufacturer websites for updated drivers to improve your

Re: [Blind-Computing] amd and dual core processors

2008-03-14 Thread Hi-Tech Tarheel
Kathy,

I prefer Intel processors over AMD for the simple fact that the AMD chips
generally run a lot hotter. Sometimes this fact can cause system
instability. Overall performance is comparable between the models from what
I've read.

Microsoft Document Scanning is a little hard to find. If you have Office
then you will find it on the start menu Programs list buried under
 Microsoft
Office and then under the Tools Menu. I normally copy the shortcut from
 here to somewhere more convenient.

The program needs a little setting up. You will need to check that your
scanner is selected under the scanner button and you should tab through
 all
the options to check that they are set as you want them. The good news is
that the program is 100% completely accessible so you will not have any
problems tabbing to all the options. You have the option of using the
inbuilt Microsoft scanner driver interface or using the scanner interface
 provided by your scanner
Personally I use the interface provided by my scanner as it has more
 features .

One tip, if you have a duplex scanner then let your scanner driver take
 care
of double sided scanning and do not tick this option in Microsoft Document
Scanning. Ticking this option in MDS will mean that you will be prompted
 to
turn pages over and scan pages twice. A duplex scanner will not need you
 to
 do this.

Once you have options set up as you want them you simply select the scan
button. After scanning Microsoft Document Scanning will automatically load
the scan into the Microsoft Document Imaging program.

Under the Tools menu of Microsoft Document Imaging you select the Send
 text
to Word menu. You will then need to press enter to clear the dialogue box
asking you to confirm you want all pages sent.

Microsoft Word will then open with your scanned text. A slight oddity is
that this is in a web htm format. I normally save at RTF or Text file.
 Jaws
seems to read better in these file types.

It's a little clunky but the payoff is the high quality OCR performance.
 As
I say on my PC it easily outperforms programs like Kurzweil which whilst
having a superior interface simply do not provide the same level of OCR
recognition so I am happy to put up with the interface to get this result.

 David Griffith

 Dear John

Remember if you have office you can use Document Scanning until you sort
 out
your Open Book problems. This is my program of choice anyway. I have
Kurzweil and Omni page but never use them as I have found the Office
 Utility
 outperforms them both.

 Hello Rick and the list:
I did exactly that yesterday, 03/10/2008. I called Technical Support and
worked with Amanda for more than an hour. She helped me to locate the
registry key and delete it so that I could re-load Open Book 8 again.
 Well,
even with my experience as a computer user and her expertise, the program
will still not open and generates a send, don't send message every
 time

 I
 try it.
The problem has already been escalated and I hope that a solution can be
 found.
For the time being, I have no scanner at all unless I uninstall Version 8
and go back to my 7.2. That works fine by the way.
Thanks for your suggestions everyone. This one is way beyond me.

2008-03-14 Thread orhan deniz
a note for jaws users like me, if you install windows XP on a mac inside a
VM (virtual machine) you will have keyboarding issues. you need to use a
keymapper to correct these. since i do not use a mac, i can not outline the
proceeger for which keys have issues. the problem why you would have these
issues is because fs use their own keyboard drivers.

with regards,
