Re: [Blind-Computing] JAWS says superscript and spacemarker in Word 2003

2009-10-06 Thread Jacob Kruger
Check out your verbosity settings, brought up using jaws key + V, since
there are various options in there that might decide whether or not it
should announce things like superscript - except that some of these are just
characters called that, and whether or not it should announce non-breaking
spaces as that, or just as spaces.

FWIW, those non-breaking spaces are - I think - typed using something like
shift + space, and it means that if a line break occured near there, it
wouldn't be implemented between the two words being typed.

HI. I'm using XP, JAWS 10 and something strange is occurring in Word
2003.

To give one example, when I type the word first like this 1st, when I
have JAWS read it back, it pronounces the following: 1 superscript st end
superscript.

I don't know why it's saying superscript.

Also, when I'm in the spell checker, it says spacemarker in between all
the

words in the sentence with the spelling error. I seem to recall something
about a setting that would stop spacemarker from being said while in MS
Word? I just can't recall what it was.

Any tips? Thanks much.

Quite some time ago, someone on this list described a
product I am now looking for. It was a cable that on one end
plugged into a USB port. On the other end, it had various
connectors for different hard drives ( I D E, SATA, etc) I
believe it also had a AC plug for external power. A part #
was supplied and I believe it was available @ Tiger Direct.
I cannot locate that email, does anyone remember that or
have a reference for me?

thanks

[Blind-Computing] jaws 10 and iGoogle with firefox

2009-10-06 Thread Tony Hernandez
Hi all. Has anyone noticed that some of the links in iGoogle gadgets in
firefox with JAWS 10 don't work when enter or the space bar is presssed? If
anyone knows about this, have you found a solution that doesn't involve
ditching iGoogle or Firefox? I've really come to rely on this combination.
Thanks in advance.

Re: [Blind-Computing] JAWS says superscript and spacemarker in Word 2003

2009-10-06 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi Chris,

Try the steps below to stop JAWS from saying superscript.
If you don't want Word to use the superscript then you can also do the
following: (this is for Word 2003).

1. Open the tools menu with Alt-T.
2. Use the up arrow key to move to the AutoCorrect options menu choice
and press enter.
3. Use your tab key to move to the page tabs and then use the right arrow
key to move to the auto format as you type page.
4. Use the tab key to move into a list of choices.
5. Use down arrow key to move to the ordinals with superscript choice and
uncheck it by using the spacebar.
6. Use the tab key to move to the OK button and press spacebar.

The above is only if you want to change the way Word replaces ordinals with
the superscript attribute.
Hope this helps. Take care.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Externally Harddrive Format

Hello,

Can someone please tell me again how to format an external
harddrive?

I did it once before, but I guess I didn't keep the steps
and I think it was
through my computer and then to the drive associated to that
harddrive, but
after that I tend to be foggy.

I'm using xp pro with jaws 10/plus can't recall the exact
version..

Thanks for any help

Patricia

John,

I wanted to take just a couple of minutes to follow up with
you today. After reading your comments and experiences, I
googled diskpart yesterday afternoon and took a crash course
in it . I found many articles, etc which were helpful. I am
happy to report that I was able to accomplish what I wanted
to and much more. I learned a lot and actually find it quite
easy now that I understand it. One very helpful reference I
found was a table of commands on the below website. I kept
for future reference. Once on the web page simply hit T to
take you to the first cell of the table. It has 3 columns
named Command, Syntax, and description.

Hi Al,
The help system for Disk Management says to click on a
portion of the
graphic that represents the drive. I was able to do this but
mostly it was
luck. Even if set to the graphical view, routing Jaws to
things was a
dubious process.
There is an alternative however.
You may want to check out Diskpart.
You can run
diskpart
from the commandline and you would type
select disk 1
create partition primary
to add a partition to that disk.
Select chooses a disk to work on, detail disk gives you info
on the selected
disk.
Many other useful commands are available.

I have been fooling around this morning with a spare 160 GB

I want to create 2 partitions on, one of which will hold an
image I want to
put on it with the Image for Windows program. In the past my
wife has
provided some sighted assistance with this task but I would
like to learn to
do the process with JAWS. I have successfully removed the
old partitions
with the computer management option. I proceeded down the
tree of options

view you can see
either drive volumes (on partitioned drives) or just view
drives. When
displaying the volumes, I was able to go to the action menu,
all tasks sub

However, I do
not see any options for creating partitions and selecting

Hi listers. MS has just released its new free anti-malware program,
Microsoft Security Essentials, for public download. Has anyone tried it
out yet during the beta testing cycle? Is it really JAWS-friendly and easy
to use? Based on the overwhelmingly positive preliminary reviews, it looks
like MS has hit a home run. If MSE is truly JAWS accessible, it sounds like
a great alternative to the free versions of AVG and Avast. If you're
interested in learning more about MSE, check it out:

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Creating Partitions with JAWS

I have been fooling around this morning with a spare 160 GB hard drive that
I want to create 2 partitions on, one of which will hold an image I want to
put on it with the Image for Windows program. In the past my wife has
provided some sighted assistance with this task but I would like to learn to
do the process with JAWS. I have successfully removed the old partitions
with the computer management option. I proceeded down the tree of options
and landed on disc management. Depending on how you set the view you can see
either drive volumes (on partitioned drives) or just view drives. When
displaying the volumes, I was able to go to the action menu, all tasks sub
menu and then delete old partitions I wanted to get rid of.
However, I do
not see any options for creating partitions and selecting what size one
would want them. What steps do I need to do to accomplish this?

thanks
Al

[Blind-Computing] Image restore quandary

2009-10-06 Thread Alan Terrie Robbins
Well the subject says it all. I will try to be as brief
below as possible to explain my dilemma and hopefully find a
simple answer that I am obviously overlooking.
About a month ago I purchased Image For Windows and am
thrilled with the program. I have successfully created and
restored two different images with no problem. Here is my
current dilemma.
I have two Acer computers. I'll call them Intel and A M D so
as to not confuse them in the below dialogue I'm describing.
My primary in home networked computer was the Intel. The A M
D computer as well as my wife's worked off this Intel unit.
The computer had not been re formatted for about a year and
a half and I also wanted to swap it out for the A M D
machine which has a faster processor and twice the memory. I
know the hours it can take to set a computer up from
scratch so I figured I would simply take the hard drive out
of the A M D computer and use it to set up the Intel
computer as time permitted. The first thing I did was to use
the Image for Windows program to create an image of the A M
D computer. I then restored that image to confirm it worked
prior to taking the hard drive out and using it in the Intel
machine. I also created an image of the Intel machine before
doing anything just in case something went amuck. I then
unplugged the Intel hard drive and plugged the A M D one
into that unit. I got the factory restore disks out for the
Intel computer and installed them on the A M D hard drive
which was now temporarily in the Intel unit. This erased all
data on the A M D hard drive and created the factory image
of the Intel computer. Everything worked well and I
installed JAWS, a few other key programs I wanted and then
burned a new image with image for windows to use a starting
point from now on with the Intel computer so I did not need
to take hours setting it up from scratch again. I then
removed the A M D hard drive from the Intel computer and
plugged the Intel one back in. The Intel computer booted up
fine and picked up from where it left off prior to switching
hard drives. I then took the A M D hard drive and put it
back in the A M D machine and put the original A M D image I
had created prior to starting this project back on it. The A
M d computer booted up fine (Just like David said it would)
and it was if nothing had ever changed. Now, for the
dilemma. I wanted to put the new image I created on the
Intel machine on the Intel hard drive to in essence have a
new, freshly formatted computer. The image will not go on
that hard drive. What happens is I put the initial disk in
the it boots just like it is supposed to. The tray comes out
and asks for the last disk of the set. I put that in, the
DVD whirs for a minute and then the tray comes out and asks
for the first disk again. When I put this back in I do not
get the dialogue asking for the Y or N to proceed and put
that image on the hard drive. It goes back to a basic
screen saying boot device cannot be found, press enter to
continue. When I do this the same process repeats but I
never can get anywhere. I thought there may be something
wrong with the Intel machine so I took the hard drive out
and put it in the A M D machine (unplugging the A M D hard
drives) to try on that machine which I know works and same
thing happened. I have even deleted all partitions on the
Intel hard drive and created and formatted new ones to
emulate a new hard drive and same out come as above. Anyone
have a solution as to how I can get the image I made with
image for windows on that Intel hard drive?

thanks
Al

I wanted to take just a couple of minutes to follow up with

googled diskpart yesterday afternoon and took a crash course
in it . I found many articles, etc which were helpful. I am
happy to report that I was able to accomplish what I wanted
to and much more. I learned a lot and actually find it quite
easy now that I understand it. One very helpful reference I
found was a table of commands on the below website. I kept
for future reference. Once on the web page simply hit T to
take you to the first cell of the table. It has 3 columns
named Command, Syntax, and description.

Hi Al,
The help system for Disk Management says to click on a
portion of the
graphic that represents the drive. I was able to do this but
mostly it was
luck. Even if set to the graphical view, routing Jaws to
things was a
dubious process.
There is an alternative however.
You may want to check out Diskpart.
You can run
diskpart
from the commandline and you would type
select disk 1
create partition primary
to add a partition to that disk.
Select chooses a disk to work on, detail disk gives you info
on the selected
disk.
Many other useful commands are available.

Hi Bill,

What I do is make all of the folders which have rules directing mail to them

other folders for storing important mail, which are subfolders of Local
