[Blind-Computing] Finding correct Scanner settings
Hi I am working with an HP scanjett 5000 scanner.I was having troubles with getting garbled text after the OCR was completed. Finally I scanned a page and it turned out perfectly. Next, I changed the setting to duplex mode and back to garbled text I went. Any ideas on why this might be? How can I conquer this trouble? I scan allot of double sided documents. Consider using Image for Windows. Sounds like you have a need to put your system back to a solid starting point quite frequently. With Image for Windows, you build your basic OS and all necessary programs and then burn a basic image. Anytime you want to return to that point you simply pop in the CD, go have a cup of coffee and come back in about a half hour and your good to go. I use this often and it is totally blind accessible. Just a thought because I've been where you are and have spent hours messing around to no avail. Now the issue is that it won't let me run certain installation packages, like trying to reinstall a version of adobe reader since it seems to be looking for installation files/components that don't exist, but the main thing that has now come around is that I can't even start microsoft word 2003 since jaws seems to crash, and the whole system is almost hanging - only thing to do seems to be to hit Ctrl + Alt + Del keys, wait a little bit, hit Alt + U for turn off menu items, and then hit the R key to choose the restart option - all of this without any talking going on, since even narrator and NVDA don't seem to want to cooperate properly when I then try to make them act as a form of backup, and jaws is just crashing outright. Anyway, now tried reinstalling office 2003 in case it needed to be repaired/reverted to it's initial installation state, but still doesn't work, but, FWIW, other pieces of office software, like excel do still work, so it seems to be specifically word in this part of the puzzle. Anyway, apart from being pretty sure will again have to reload windows from scratch, like I normally seem to need to do around every 3-6 months, was just wondering if anyone had any ideas/ideas to try sort this out more easily/quicker? Re: [Blind-Computing] Changing Windows Media Player to anothersoundcard
Hi Ishe, Thanks for the help. Every thing is now working the way I want it to. Brian - Original Message - From: "Ishe Chinyoka" To: Sent: Thursday, June 03, 2010 1:49 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Changing Windows Media Player to anothersoundcard Hi, There are two ways in which you can do it: assuming that you want Windows Media Player to use another card not used by your screen reader: The first option is go to your Start Menu; go to Control Panel; move to Sound and Audio Devices; press enter. Press Control plus Tab to the Audio page; tab to "Sound Playback audio device" and arrow to choose the device to be used by Windows for all audio output. After this, press Okay to apply your changes. The other way is to change the sound card used by Jaws: of which I think is the easiest way to do: Open your Jaws menu by pressing JAWS+J; Arrow to Utilities; In the Utilities menu, arrow to Sound Cards submenu using your right arrow. Here you will see that Jaws uses the Windows default card. Arrow to the sound card you want JAWS to use and press Enter on it. Changes will take place immediately. This helps so that when Windows is using one sound card, JAWS will be forced to use the other one unless you remove the one you assigned to Jaws. In that case, Jaws will revert to the Windows default. However, just make sure that the sound card you assign to Jaws is not the one used by Windows anyway. You can get this info by opening the Sound and Audio Devices as I stated above. Just see which one is being used for sound playback: and then assign the other one to Jaws. I hope this helps. When I reload my machines, I just make sure I install all the drivers I have for them before installing things like jaws, and one way to check something like driver status - in windows XP anyway - is to go to device manager, via control panel, administrative tools, computer management, move down to device manager, tab over to hardware tree structure, find the display adapters there, and look for specific devices, hit alt + enter to open their properties dialogue, ctrl + tab to driver tab, and you should be able to see if they seem to have been installed, but standardly, you would have received hardware drivers with most machines. Anyway, simplest might be to reinstall/update the driver (option to do that from device manager doesn't necessarily help since it tries to automatically search net for versions), and then try reinstalling jaws etc. Stay well, and good luck Jacob Kruger Blind Biker Skype: BlindZA '...fate had broken his body, but not his spirit...' - Original Message - From: "Arianna Calesso" To: Sent: Tuesday, June 08, 2010 7:51 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Another question about video intercept I honestly don't know, Jacob. Re: [Blind-Computing] Another question about video intercept
Hello, It sounds like you might have tried to install the video intercept more than once. I would try to uninstall the current screen reader and the video intercept and start over. There might be an issue with having more than one screen reader on the system. In that case you might have to uninstall both screen readers. Then install jaws first. Then if you have to install the other screen reader. But from the information that you have given, I think that by uninstalling the current version of jaws and reinstalling the video intercept you might have some success. Re: [Blind-Computing] Computer Start Up
XP Log-On This can be accomplished very simply: 1. From the run dialogue, type exactly what you see on the next line exactly the way you see it: control userpasswords2 This will open a special dialogue from which you can select your own user account to log on by default. 2. You will land on a checkbox that says, Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer checkbox checked. Leave it checked for now and tab once. 3. You should hear: Users for this computer: list view administrator administrator. 4. Arrow down to your name. It should say something like your name and administrator, like Donnie administrator. 5. Tab back around to that checkbox that said, users must enter a user name and password to use this computer, and hit the space bar to uncheck it. 6. Tab to apply and hit the space bar. 7. Then tab to the okay button and hit the space bar! Your done, your computer should boot up now without having to log in. Basically you have now told the computer to automatically log you in without requiring you to type the information in. - Original Message - From: "Donnie Parrett" To: "Blind-Computing" Sent: Tuesday, June 08, 2010 9:28 AM Subject: [Blind-Computing] Computer Start Up My computer is set up, so that on start up, it automatically goes to a log in screen because originally, it was used by four different people. Re: [Blind-Computing] Is there a way to get a sound when I get gmail?
Hi Ishe and Everyone. So Ishe, how do I get sound produced when I get emails if I'm using Google Talk? I get a sound if someone wants to chat. I use the client for work now with some scripts I found on the web for Jaws. I don't sign into the email chat because it confuses the client and I get a lot of garbage in messages. I have Jaws 10, and can't seem to use the email version of chat any more, or I can't figure out how to anyway. For a while the email version was all I could use but then they changed it. Thanks for any help you can give. Re: [Blind-Computing] Issue with jaws 11 and word 2003 after computer issues were resolved using windows XP service pack 3
Jacob, Although this suggestion will not help your current situation, it will in the future. [Blind-Computing] Getting JFW to read Outlook reminders automatically
Hi all, is there anyway of getting a screen reader to read an Outlook reminder automatically, in this case Outlook 2003? For example when the reminders whindow pops up it is not automatically brought into focus and you must alt-tab to get it into focus and then JFW reads the reminder. What we are trying to accomplish is having the reminder read automatically so that if we are on the phone or on the other side of the room we won't have to go back to the computer to bring the reminder window into focus to find out what the reminder is.
