Re: [Blind-Computing] playing a track on DVD using VLC

2010-09-14 Thread Jacob Kruger

How do you then start VLC?

I think it would be best to open My computer (windows key + E), arrow down
to the DVD, right click on it, and choose something like play with VLC media
player.

There is also a way to select it from within the player itsself, but this is
how I generally do it, including on folder copies of DVDs.

Hi Jacob,

I tried this, but when I arrow down on navigation, I get "empty -
unavailable".

The DVD I have is That 70's show with the 1st 5 or so shows on it. When I
put the DVD in, it does recognize that this is indeed the That's 70's show
DVD. I haven't tried any other DVD's because I don't have any. We just
signed up for Netflix, so this is the 1st DVD we've received.

[Blind-Computing] Special News Alert: Adobe Reader flaw appears in Flash

2010-09-14 Thread DoubleLegal
http://www.komando.com/dailynews/index.aspx?id=9469

Special News Alert: Adobe Reader flaw appears in Flash

Adobe has just announced a new security flaw in Flash. The flaw is the
same as the recent problem revealed in Reader. The Flash flaw won't be patched
until the week of Sept. 27. And the flaw in Reader won't be patched until the
week of Oct. 4.

Until the patches arrive, there are few options to stay safe. You can use
another PDF reader. Unfortunately, though, there isn't a good alternative to
Flash.

Adobe and Microsoft recommend trying Microsoft's latest Enhanced
Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET). This makes it easy to enable advanced
security options in Windows. One of these options is turned off in Reader and
Flash.

The cause of the flaw is complex, but here's the short version. One of
the Adobe files lacks Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) capability.
This allows hackers to circumvent safeguards and run code.

Activating ASLR for Flash and Reader can slow down hackers. Note that
ASLR is only available in Windows Vista and 7. XP users will have to wait for a
patch.

Download and run the EMET program. Click the Configure System button.
Change the Profile Name to Maximum Security Settings. Then click OK.

Now click the Configure Apps button at the bottom of the program. Click
the Add button. Then go to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\. You will see at
least one application (.EXE) file. Select that and click Open. Repeat this step
for every .EXE file in that directory.

Now click the Add button again. Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader
9.0\Reader\. Select the application file AcroRDd32.exe. Then click Open.

Once this is done, click OK. Now restart your computer. Your system
should be reasonably protected.

Now, it is important to note that Flash and Reader weren't designed to
work this way. You may encounter some problems. In that case, you will need to
turn off ASLR.

Open the EMET program. Click the Configure Apps button. Now select an
application and click the Remove button. Do this for all the affected programs.
Click OK and restart the computer.

It seems that around 2007 they switched from wxWidgets for their user
interface to using qt as their default. They had promised that they would
try to provide an accessible wx interface as a plug-in. VLC also supports
skins for the interface. I will play around, ask a few questions and see

Re: [Blind-Computing] Arranging folders in folders

one way to do this is to put a number in front of the folder name. It
should naturally do this in alphabetical order but if you choose not to
just put a number in front of the folder name and it will put them in order.

Hello all!
Want an accessible DVD and media player? Look no further than VLC
Media Player! You can select what part of the DVD you want to play
simply by using the VLC Media Player menus. No inaccessible DVD menu
to navigate; just select what you want from the user interface. You
can even select an audio described track if you have one.
You can download this free and open source program from
www.videolan.org. It even works with Windows 7 so you don't have to
use Windows Media Player, which is good but does not have an
accessible DVD player.
Enjoy!

[Blind-Computing] daily tip

2010-09-14 Thread David Ferrin
Save The Page

If you're using Internet Explorer and you come across a Web page with
information you want to preserve, there are two good ways to keep the
information without having to use a Web browser to bring it back up. The first
and simplest way is to print it; it never hurts to have a hard copy of
information you need. Another method is to save the Web page as an .MHT
(Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) file, which is essentially just a
snapshot of the page. In this format you can send the page to others or
double-click on it to open it directly. To make a .MHT file from a Web page,
click File (press the ALT key to reveal the File menu if you don't see it),
click Save As, and in the dialog box be sure to select the .MHT file type. Tell
the computer where to put the file and click Save.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] help with getting new router

I have no idea about finding a new router so, I need some suggestions.

I was with Verizon before and had Y-Fi. Now, I changed providers and I am
now with Comcast.

My boyfriend and I have no clue about which router to purchase. I would like
for it to be an easy install but if it requires sighted help my boyfriend
can see so, he can help there but, again, we both do not know which to
purchase and we no nothing about this sort of thing. Verizon set up the Y-Fi
router for us. Comcast told us when we got their service that they do not
carry wireless/Y-Fi routers so, we would have to purchase one. It's like
pulling teeth with Comcast so, it doesn't help to ask them anything and that
is all they would tell me.

Ok, so we are wanting wireless/Y-Fi router. Easy install but, not necessary.
I have a Desktop with Windows XP Pro and my boyfriend has a laptop with
Windows Vista if that info is needed. We are really not wanting to go above
$150.00 but, a little over that will be ok. We do a lot of streaming.

I'm going to have to purchase this from Wal-Mart online because we need this
soon because my boyfriend works from home so, he needs to use the internet
soon. We don't have much left in the accounts but, we have a Wal-Mart card
we can put the router on so, that is why I mention Wal-Mart.

If there is a place better to purchase a router instead of Wal-Mart please
let me know anyway; we don't want anything cheap that will end up not
working as soon as we purchase it.

If there is anything else I need to let any of you know please let me know.

Thank you,
Mel

Yes you can! They are called sub-folders. When you are in a folder, using
XP, press Alt + F for the file menu, the letter W for new submenu, the
letter F for folder, and you will now be in an edit field that you type what
you want to name the folder. When you are finished typing the folder name,
press enter to save and, wham-bam you've got yourself a folder within a

[Blind-Computing] memo to the list

2010-09-14 Thread David Ferrin
This is in regard of the recent thread about some of us being old timers myself
included BTW. A couple of us who monitor these lists have been receiving
private messages from people complaining about the way things have been
handled. Personally my opinion is that it was handled quite well. A young man
made what he felt was an innocent comment and he got a lot of flack for it from
many of the members on here, again myself included. We left the thread go for a
couple of days just to lighten the mood on here but yesterday I decided it was
time to shut it down and get back to the purpose of what this list is all
about. Now I am getting private messages that the guys are getting complaints
that things were heading in a racial or ethnic direction. This I can state for
a fact is not, never has been, or never will be an issue on any list I have a
hand in monitoring. I can't control private messages any of you might send to
each other but so far as what comes over this forum that's an
 other story.

I do this because I feel it is something that needs to be done. People in my
opinion need a safe place where they can ask for help without fear of being
insulted or criticized for not knowing a particular fact of computing. I
started JAWS Users with Bob almost five years ago and Rick joined us about six
months later, together the three of us have weathered some pretty big storms
again just because we all feel it is something that simply needs to be done.

The only thing we get out of it is the satisfaction that we are doing something
that is helping out a lot of people or at least we'd like to think so. Honestly
there are days when I think that playing electronic golf or enjoying the out
side world listening to my Victor Reader seem pretty enticing. Some day we may
shut it down although we are not planning on it at the present time.

I need Rick and Bob to help me run these lists and if they get tired of doing
it I'm not doing them alone, they are just too big. So no more private messages
to either of them. I'm the guy who's name is on the door so to speak.

it is nice that you state that fact, thank you. I only posted my earlier

am. Often times I have to step away for family reasons or what ever and they
handle the load without missing a beat. I had to step back about 6 months

It's just that once in a while I have to climb up on my soap box because I'm
