Make sure window is maximised - sounds to me like it has somehow sort of relocated itsself a bit off screen so that only top left corner is appearing on screen, and this is somehow blocking your screen readers interpret\ation/rendition of things like menu systems, formatting (unread messages appear as bold) etc. etc. Just a guess/thought, but make sure - Alt + space bar, followed by X. Cool.
