Re: [Blind-Computing] Bit Rate
Here's a link to the wikipedia article on bitrate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitrate Aside from that, in terms of audio files, in general, the bitrate is referred to in kbps = kilo bits per second - as in each second of the audio track would include something like 192 kilo bits, and since each byte is 8 bits, that means 192 kilobits = 24 kilobytes per second, and since a megabyte is 1024 kilo bytes, that means that if an audio track is 100 seconds long (to just use an easy number to work with) it would have a size of 2400 kilo bytes, which then translates to 2.34 megabytes. One was 420 MB and the other was 130 MB in size. They asked me why one movie was so much larger in size than the other. Well, I had converted one movie from .ogg format to mp3 format, and forgot to change the Bit from 320 to perhaps 128 with my Switch converter. The other smaller size movie was already in mp3 format, so that one I did not have to convert to mp3 as my friend cannot open and play .ogg files in their Windows Media Player, they do not have the Plug-in I have. Now, sorry to be so long about this question, but I had a hard time explaining the difference in a audio file with a bit rate of 320 as opposed to a smaller size bit rate. I know when uploading or downloading I get a message stating I am uploading at a bit rate of for example 50.5 KB/sec, and I download at around 750 KB/sec, but how does one state the Bit Rate of an Audio file? I mean, it is not KB/sec as when you are uploading or downloading. I do not know what or how you would call the Bit rate of an Audible File, does some one have a clear explanation that I can understand? I would very much appreciate it! Re: [Blind-Computing] NVDA Not Speaking File Extensions
Are they being displayed? By default, windows XP will hide the display thereof in windows explorer since it shows graphical icoms to represent file types to sighted users. One of the first things I do on any new machine is go to windows explorer, navigate to something like C: drive, hit alt + T for tools menu, arrow up to and hit enter on options..., ctrl + tab to view tab, and on advanced items tree structure, look for something like hide file extensions for known file types, and make sure that this is turned off, then tab over to and hit space bar on apply button, and then tab around to look for a button related to applying the view to all folders, and hit space on that button, confirm that I do want it, and then tab to and hit space bar on ok button. I generally also make sure it's displaying list view via view menu etc. before doing this as well FWIW. [Blind-Computing] List Guidelines Reminder
Welcome to the Blind Computing mailing list. This list has been created for the purpose of discussing any and all aspects of computing with the blind user in mind. List Guidelines: The following are guidelines set forth by the list management team and every member is expected to abide by them. 1. Profanity and ethnic or racial slurs will not be tolerated. 2. Flaming of individuals or groups or organizations of any kind will not be tolerated. 3. Advertising is not permitted. 4. Political or religious inferences or discussions are not permitted. 5. Forwarded messages and attachments are not permitted. If you have an article or message of interest which relates to the nature of this list send it to the list owner and if it is appropriate, it will be posted to the list. Additionally if you want to make an announcement about another list send it to the list owner for consideration. Do not post it to the list before obtaining approval. 6. No off-topic posts! Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not make it all right. Off-topic posts include but are not limited to discussions of Blind advocacy groups, products for the blind that are not computer-related items, Transportation for the blind, and Job opportunities or concerns. If you are not sure whether or not your topic is appropriate contact the list owner for approval before posting. 7. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the following manner: Using the TO: field with only one list address. The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules to go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and every list. This practice does nothing ut clutter up such lists with unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators. 8. On topic posts may include but are not limited to discussions of Screen readers and magnifiers, computer peripherals, (scanners printers Braille devices etc) Computer operation, Computer maintenance and Computer building. 9. Subject lines should be clear and to the point! Subject lines such as I Need help or Does anyone know are not descriptive and might be ignored by the very person who might otherwise have answered your query. Also do not include any member names in the subject line. 10. Keep the message content relative to the topic being discussed! If the conversation starts to drift from the original topic initiate a new conversation message with a new subject line to reflect the new topic. 11. No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not included. Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed! 12. The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with flirting or other such inappropriate activities. this is not a high tech swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services will not be bought or sold using this forum. No message headers please! Nobody wants to read an irrelevant message before reading your post. If you want to plug your business church or whatever do it somewhere else not on this list! If you want to include contact information and a tag line at the bottom of your messages feel free to do so but do not make another message out of it. Remember that there are people of different walks of life origin age groups and levels of computer experience on the list. Individuals with more knowledge and experience should be patient with those who are trying to become more proficient. If you have comments, questions or concerns about how the list is being run do not post them to the list contact the list management team. It is not the place for any individual list member to admonish another member for an improper post let the management Team do their job. Hopefully everyone will benefit from this list and it will allow all of us to be more comfortable and productive using these machines that help us get thru this thing called life! * By joining this list you accept the guidelines as outlined above, and agree to abide by them. No, I did not consider moving to Office 2007. I am a light user of Word and Excel and did not want to spend the extra $$ to move to 2007. I will most likely also use Outlook 2003, as OE does not work with Win 7 and I have never found Thunderbird to work that well with Jaws. [Blind-Computing] Changing the volume of various sound cards in windows 7
I believe somebody asked this earlier this morning or at least I hope it was on this list. Never the less what I found out is as follows: I type sndvol and hit enter in the run dialog box. This opened up the volume control and then I tabbed over to a split button and hit enter. That opened up a drop down list of my installed sound cards. Next I arrowed to my secondary sound card and hit enter. Then all I had to do was tab over to the up down slider to change the volume on that sound card. Then to change back to the other sound card I just went back to the split button and hit enter on it, and arrowed back to the first sound card, hit enter. Infact, it looks like any avast program above version5 don't like my machine! When the computer crashed I couldn't even bring it up to windows. I had to get my brother to go in to safe mode and use the uninstall tool for avast in order to get things working again. My brother don't know this, but my computer is stuck again. I installed the free version5 which is what I've been using but, I thought it would be good to up date the program, I suppose it up dated it to version6? In any case the computer is now waiting for my brother to go to safe mode and fix it again. Listers, does anybody have any ideas what's going on here? Or maybe, you know! What's going on here? I installed the free version5 which is what I've been using but, I thought it would be good to up date the program, I suppose it up dated it to version6? In any case the computer is now waiting for my brother to go to safe mode and fix it again. Listers, does anybody have any ideas what's going on here? Or maybe, you know! What's going on here? Okay, I'm here listening. [Blind-Computing] internet explorer 9 problem
Hello For some reason I am having a problem with internet explorer 9. The problem is this. When I start I e 9 it loads with no problem My opening page is there and I can arrow up and down with no problem. However when I visit a website either by pressing f6 or by going to favourites the following thing happens All I get is jaws saying blank blank blank. For example I went to Debenhams website and the Debenhams opening page loaded ok. But when I went down arrow all jaws said for ages is blank blank for each press of the down arrow After a lengthy period of time jaws would announce a heading followed by blank blank blank. It's as though there are things missing and that is why jaws says blank. I could be wrong here but it is the only thing I can think of Does anyone know what is causing this and how can it be put right?. Debenhams is not the only website this happens on using I e 9. I go to amazon and before this happened if I press the letter b I could go to several places such as add to basket proceed to checkout etcetera. Now when I press button b all I get is jaws saying one or 2 things followed by wrapping to top.it no longer gives me the choices of adding to the basket and proceeding to the checkout. Therefore can anyone help with this? I am using windows 7 jaws 11 And internet explorer 9 Thank you Yvonne For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ Send any questions regarding list management to: blind-computing-ow...@jaws-users.com

[Blind-Computing] USB Hubs
I am using Jaws 12 and Windows XP at work. I have for different USB connections constantly, and occasionally I have to unplug and attach another. I looked on Amazon at hubs and got a headache. What should I be looking for? I am plugging in two printers, a second keyboard, a harddrive backup and so on. Re: [Blind-Computing] internet explorer 9 problem
Hi Yvonne, I haven't been following the progress of IE 9,so I don't know if it is out of beta yet, and if it isn't, you might want to wait until it is. Also, you might want to check the Freedom Scientific website to see if they have any info on which version of Jaws is most compatible with IE9. My guess is that it would be version 12 since it seems to be the best one to use with Windows 7.
