Re: [Blind-Computing] mp3 and audio formats

2011-07-17 Thread Lennie

Hi,

Mp3 is burned as a data CD which was explained in the other email can
hold a lot of music. For example, I have a data CD that I created
with over 100 MP3 songs on a 80 minutes CD. Mp3 CD can only be played
on MP3 player and most CD and car stereo cannot play a MP3 CD.

On the other hand, when you burn an audio CD, it usually can hold
about 22 to 25 CDA songs on an 80 minutes CD which can be played on
any CD player. I do have a player that can play both audio and MP3
CDs which is pretty nice.

I hope that I help enlighten you further with this.

Take care.

Lennie.

Can someone help me and explain the difference between mp3 format and audio
like if you are going to burn a cd in mp3 or audio format.

Thanks

Kathy

Yes, there is an add-on that makes still incompatible extensions work with
newer FF versions and it's called Add-on Compatibility Reporter; after
installing and restarting Firefox it sort of enables those add-ons so now I
can use WebVisum and other still incompatible add-ons with FF 5 just fine.

Here's your expeditious reply. Webvisum will not work with Firefox 5.
There is supposedly a Firefox add-on that will make it work, but I don't
know whether this is true. And with the impending release of FF 6 just a
few weeks away, it does not look like Webvisum will be updated to work with
these new releases of FF. Until this mess gets sorted out, your best bet is
to stick with your current version of Firefox as long as it works with
Webvisum.

Since this was mentioned on this list a search of the list archives

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Firefox Advice

Recently, there has been a flurry of inquiries on this and other lists
regarding the compatibility of Firefox 5 with Wevvisum. Webvisum in its
current version will not work with Firefox 5, and therefore will not work
with Firefox 6, which is scheduled for release on August 16, either. My
advice is to stick with your current version of Firefox that still works
with Webvisum. Once you upgrade to a later version of Firefox and discover
that it doesn't work with Webvisum, it may be difficult or impossible to
roll back to an earlier version and get Webvisum working again. Keep in
mind that Webvism is now the only reliable means of solving captchas without
sighted help, as Solona is no longer functioning on a consistent basis. So
if the ability to solve captchas is important to you, do not upgrade to
Firefox 5 or later. On the other hand, if you don't care about solving
captchas, then go ahead and upgrade.

[Blind-Computing] GoldWave Total Time and file Splitting Issue

2011-07-17 Thread Scorpio Forever
Hi Folks,

I am attempting to split a large file into smaller chunks and I'm having
trouble with it for the first time ever.

First, the relevant facts...

I'm currently using the latest build of GoldWave and Jaws 12, and the latest
GoldWave scripts from the Jaws-Users scripts page.

I'm also using Windows XP home edition on a Toshiba laptop.

Now the particulars of the case.

The file I'm trying to split is just under 6 and a half hours long, this
according to Winamp, my BookSense XT and the status line under Windows Explorer.

Once loaded into GoldWave, however, GoldWave reports that the file is only 23
minutes and 17 seconds long after doing a control+A to highlight the entire
file.

I've even attempted to move, both the start and end markers to the end of the
file, and playing on from there, but no go. I can't for the life of me
understand why I can't get past the 23 minutes and 17 second mark.

A few possibly irrelevant facts are that this is an Audible converted file, and
though GoldWave states that there's only 23 minutes in the file, when I play
the file on my BookSense XT, or in Winamp, the entire file is there at just
under six hours and a half. Another possibly irrelevant fact is that when
reading the status bar in Windows Explorer, the status line is reading the
entire file is there at the 6 and a half hours, but it's stating that it's a
quicktime format file, even though the extension is MP3.

If anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening, I would appreciate your
input.

Thanks.

Re: [Blind-Computing] flash memory v thumb sticks

2011-07-17 Thread John Justice
With all due respect to Larry, that is not necessarily so. Here in the US,
we call those portable storage devices, thumb drives because they look
superficially like a thumb. On the other hand, there are flash cards,
produced very cheaply, which are not rewritable. The material is burned
onto them but cannot be removed or changed. They are rare but some major
distributors like on line newspapers, use them because they can produce
thousands of them with relatively low cost. The average cost of a thumb
drive or thumb stick, runs anywhere from $5 USD to about $20 USD, depending
on the memory capacity.
Flash cards, on the other hand, can cost commercially as little as $1 USD or
less. With a massive copy device, as many as 100 flash cards can be burned
simultaneously. Once they are used, they can be thrown away with little
impact to the environment or, more importantly, to the projected cost
absorbed by the on line media producer.
I believe that these flash cards will become more and more prevalent as time
passes.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Can I use the JAWS dictionary to not read Unicode characters?

2011-07-17 Thread Chris Feist
Hi. That's how I did it. If I recall, I held down the alt key when I typed
out 8203 and it created that character. I then copied it to the JAWS
dictionary. But it wants me to put something in the edit field to replace
it, and I used the space bar. Unfortunately, then when JAWS reads a line
with that character in it, since this character appears in the middle of
words, it breaks up the word. For example:

Hi, how is ever yone doing? Unfortunate y my comp uter has issues.

If I could just get JAWS to ignore that Unicode character all together and
just read as if it wasn't there. But at least it's better than it was.
Some sentences I still can't understand, but others I can figure out what it
is supposed to say. Thanks.

Hi Chris,

I was able to make what you are wanting to do work in Outlook Express
Word. Below are the steps I used to do it. I did use the default
dictionary manager instead of 1 of the application dictionary managers.
1. I created the
? copied it to the clipboard.
2. Pressed Insert / Jaws key + D, for the the application dictionary
manager, then pressed control, shift, + D, for the default dictionary
manager.
3. Tabbed to the Add button, pressed spacebar to open the Actual Word edit
field, pressed the back space key a few times to make sure this edit field
was empty, pasted the,
? character.
4. Tabbed to the Replacement Word edit field, pressed the spacebar 1 time,
tabbed to the okay button pressed enter.
5. Invoke the control + S keystroke to save, Alt + F4 to close.

This is how I created the ? .

I turned the numlock off, held the alt key down, pressed 8, 2, 0, 3, let up
on the alt key, there was the ? . I then copied it went from there.
If you are creating 8203 symbol differently please let me know I'll try to

duplicate what you're doing. The ? is what I get when invoking the Alt
+ 8203 keystroke and I'm curious if you're getting a different symbol. Take

care.

Hi. Turns out I was able to create the Unicode character 8203 in Word. I
then was able to copy it and put it into the JAWS dictionary.

However, I'm stuck once again. It requires I put something in the edit
field for it to be spoken as. But to just use the spacebar doesn't work
because then it splits up the voicing of words since this Unicode
character
randomly appears in the middle of words on Facebook.

What I'm trying to do is have JAWS totally ignore character 8203 as if it
wasn't on the screen at all. But if I have to put something, even a
space,
in the field for how I want it to be spoken, it's still speaking
incorrectly. Not sure what to try next.

If I can just figure out a way to have JAWS ignore this character, then my
Facebook struggles will be over, at least in this particular case.

  Hi Chris,

If you can't copy the character there will be no way to put an entry into
the dictionary manager for it. I made a mistake when I said the ASCII
  character 8203 was a, mail symbol. I used the word mail, spelled,M, A, I,
L.

It is actually supposed to be, M, A, L, E, as in a man's symbol. I did an
ASCII character 8204, it is a female symbol. I have no idea what or how
Facebook works since I am not involved with any Social Networking groups.
I

do certainly hope that you can get the problem resolved but, from the way

HI. When I read current line, what it says Is question mark, or
sometimes
it acts like a question mark and makes the word sound like it's asking a
question.

But if I put the cursor on this character, it says absolutely nothing.
  Not
even blank. It's completely silent. But if I hit the current character
  key
three times, it tells me that it's ASCKI character 8 2 zero 3.

I tried to copy this character, but it just says nothing selected.
So,
  as
far as I can tell, I can't have the JAWS dictionary ignore these strange
Unicode characters, if that's what they are. I'm really confused on
what
this even is.

I can barely read statuses on the mobile site of Facebook anymore since
so
many of these characters are appearing in the posts. It's maddening.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] repairing windows 7 home

Has anyone tried a repair on windows 7 home? I have
m.republicianherald.com for the mobile version of our newspaper.
When I click on the link prior to the local temp it brings up an
accuweather page for my home town. Now on that page there is an
extended forecast. When I click on that it displays state
college weather. However, the actual address has my zip code. I
ran 3 different spyware programs including combofix. It has not
corrected the problem. I then used firefox with the same result
so it has to be in my system. My wife€셲 lap top works fine. A
few months ago a similar problem was there only the site that it
tried to take me to was listed as profanity. I ran eset and the
same anti spyware programs and combofix made a registry change
that corrected the problem. It now is not making the correction.
