[Blind-Computing] IE 9 came on computer but I want IE 8
I got a new Dell Win 7 laptop recently and it came with IE 9. On my previous laptop I have constantly rolled it back to IE 8 which is a royal pain but can be done. But on the new one there was not an IE 8 to roll back to. When I searched on the Microsoft site it said there was IE 8 for XP but I did not see one for Windows 7. I am using Jaws 11. Since I still have the old laptop I have compared the same websites on both IE 8 and 9 and 8 has more clickable links. Can anyone tell me how to get to IE 8? How to remove the IE 9 and replace it with 8? Where to find the Win 7 version of IE 8 to download? And last but not least, how can I keep it from constantly installing IE 9 every week? I have been through the windows updates but can’t find any place to click to prevent the IE 9 from re-installing itself. I thought I could live with IE 9 but with Jaws 11 it is almost impossible. Another very bothersome problem with the IE 9 is that when I go down the page line by line looking for something specific it says blank about 10 times or more before getting to the next element. I do use the n or p or control down arrow but I am afraid it often skips over the specific thing I am looking for. So any help would be gratefully appreciated. Re: [Blind-Computing] IE 9 came on computer but I want IE 8
An example of why IE 8 works better with Jaws 11, at least is a page called thefriendmail.com which I recently set up to give me an easy way to handle Facebook. When setting it up it took me to the page on my Facebook where it asked for permission. On IE 9 there was no link that said Allow. In fact, after much tedious searching I could not even find the word in the proper place to attempt to click it. On IE 8, however, the link for Allow preceeded the information about the friend mail. I would really like to know if this link shows up on IE 9 with Jaws 13. If Jaws 13 is really an improvement in handling the Internet I might have to bite the bullet and upgrade although the $$ is not really in my budget. I did not upgrade previously since none of the new features was anything that seemed necessary to me. It seems that every time i get a new computer I have to add in the cost of a double jump in Jaws versions. Makes that sale on my Dell so not worth it, especially as I took the 3 year policy on it as well. Live and learn, I guess. I still would like to know how to keep IE 9 from constantly re-installing on my former laptop so I can use it for trickier sites. Also would like to know how to make jaws not say blank, blank, blank, over and over when arrowing down a page in IE 9. Thanks in advance. Hi. You could try using nvda an open source screen reader. It works well with ie 9. I have it on my computer and use it almost all the time. The only time I do not use it is to do some design in Microsoft access. When you first download it the voices leave a lot to wish for. However you can get much beter voices from Microsoft for free. The screen reader is free as well but they do ask for donations It is a project worth supporting as I would rate the screen reader a close third after jaws and window eyes. Re: [Blind-Computing] IE 9 came on computer but I want IE 8
IE9 works different than IE8. I am not sure how the new methods work with older versions of JAWS. Instead of a dialog that pops up for things like security, or approving an add-on, or a file download, it displays the message of the dialog and the buttons for it's options in the Information bar. This bar is above the top of the page in the frame of IE. I hear it is displayed in yellow. Pressing Alt + n will move focus to the Information bar. This is a Windows shortcut, so it will still work using other screen readers or older versions of JAWS. Usually, the buttons can be reached after going to the Information bar by pressing Tab. If the button says split, hitting Enter on it will take that option, other options can be seen by using the Down Arrow. I do not know how older versions of JAWS treats or handles these buttons. Hi I just bought a nice set of graphics for my website. Now, I would like to install them. I believe the website uses style sheets. Does anyone know how I can go about installing and positioning the graphics. Re: [Blind-Computing] Cannot activate some links in I.E. 8
Ann Annette, I have found that using Control+Enter will sometimes activate a link which doesn't ordinarily respond to the normal Enter key, alone. This happens a lot with the Apple ITunes store. I'm not sure why. I do remember reading something about what were called Safety Links, links which would not respond unless a certain key combination was used with the Enter key. This might be way off base but I hope it helps. [Blind-Computing] New Laptop
Hello everyone, I am considering buying a new laptop for my fiance. She is sighted, but I will still have to access it from time to time to see what kind of problem she may have encountered. I am researching some different things and have come across a couple of different websites dealing with processors. Apparently Intel is the best leaving AMD in the dust. However, when looking at Intel there is still a wide selection to choose from. A couple that is sticking out to me right now are the 790X which I think it said it had a processor speed of 3.3 ghz, but could handle up to 3.7 ghz. Then there is the i2500 which is supposedly last years model, maybe even 2010 model, but according to the website that spoke of this processor it is the best on the market right now. Is this the case? Now, we move into 32 bit or 64 bit. My theory is that now that 64 bit has been introduced eventually 32 bit will phase out. Is that a safe assumption? In the meantime though i hear that a lot of programs are not supporting 64 bit at this time. Is this correct? Does the Microsoft Suite work on either system? I am sure eventually I will need to look into sound cards to determine which one I will want in her system and I guess video card as well. If I buy it off the shelf then I have to take what I get, but if I have it built and that is what I am looking at what is going to be the best or next to best that can go in this system. I say next to best because the best might be out of my price range so I am just wanting to have a fallback option. Any other information when considering a laptop will be greatly appreciated. I want her computer to have the capability of playing games, but if she needs to make a powerpoint for school or if she needs to write a paper for school then she also has that capability as well. So versatility is a must. Thank you all in advance for any information offered on this matter. For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

The issue is often, but not always, when I copy something to the clipboard while in Word, the computer just hangs for about ten seconds. I thought it maybe it was scanning or something. I thought maybe some sort of virus too, but I run McAffy and Malware Bytes, and though I see this happened similar to others on a Google search, I didn't' see a definite solution, at least not one I was willing to go clicking around the net on unknown domains for supposed fixes. Is there some sort of clipboard setting I can't find to shut something off? I don't' know if it is Office clipboard or Windows clipboard but I suspect Office clipboard. I see clipboard items in my system tray as well. I did use the apps key and clicked stop collecting which seemed to help temporarily, but I see they're back now. Must have been after closing office or something. Anyway it's frustrating waiting for it from time to time. Hello there; I don't have the problem your speaking about, in fact, I don't see nothing in my system tray referring to clipboard. Perhaps this is the issue? Is there a way to not have those things running in the system tray? -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brad Dunse Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 4:48 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] Clipboard and computer delay I wonder if anyone else has this issue. Re: [Blind-Computing] Clipboard and computer delay
I'd seen this before, and evidently back then did exactly what you said twice in a row not seeing any options or difference in a status, and very likely dismissedly and unknowingly toggled it back on again. So far it seems to have worked with the delay. The only thing different I did in case anyone needs to ajust it, was I needed to arrow down to the Clipboards sub menu and then arrow to the Office Clipboard button and hit enter. Too bad they don't' show it with a status on or off. Anyway, thanks I think this will do it. [Blind-Computing] Unable to get online using 64 bit laptop
Hi all. I just purchased a 64 bit laptop which has Windows Seven. I am not able to go online with this machine but have no problem doing so with my 32 bit desktop machine. Could it be the router? The routher I am currently using is set up for hard-wired and wireless connections but prior to this, I have only used the wireless connection with a Mac. I should also say that I've had this Net-gear router for several years; long before 64 bit machines came out. Any thoughts on this matter would be appreciated. Yes. Most laptops do have a switch that will turn wireless on and off. I have a dell laptop that has said switch on the side.
