Personally, I just compact them manually once a week, since I don't receive an extraordinary amount of mail, and don't open OE alot in any given day. My advice to anyone using OE would be to manually compact the messages on a regular basis, avoiding the automatic compaction. As far as backing up the folders for OE,I simply back up the Documents and Settings folder every day, doing this gets me more than I need, but I get the important stuff in one sweep, like: OE identities Jaws settings Address book custom dictionary Desktop Favorites Start Menu, and the SendTo folder. I use Karen's Replicator to perform this job, and E-Backup to save the internal settings for OE. Re: [Blind-Computing] warning about Compacting OE Folders
I suffered that some weeks ago The problem the computer never crashed while the compacting was going on previously but it did on this final occasion. I prefer to turn off the compacting in the registry and manually compact the folders myself. - Original Message - From: "Dennis Clark" To: Sent: Monday, February 11, 2013 6:25 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] warning about Compacting OE Folders Hello everyone, I agree with David that it would not be a good idea to turn off message compacting, if that is even possible. However, you should back up your outlook express folder before clicking OK to compact. Five years ago after clicking OK for compacting, my wife's computer crashed during the compacting process, and when she rebooted and open outlook express, all her email folders were still present, but they were empty and all her email messages were gone. Since that time, I back up our outlook express folders before compacting. Happily the problem has never occurred again. But if the compacting operation is interrupted, the result is very costly. The outlook express folder is buried deep inside many layers of subfolders, but once you locate it, you can save the location as a favorite so you can easily locate it in the future to back it up. You can also relocate the outlook express folder to a different location, so that it is easy to find and back up. This is a good practice apart from the compacting problem, since system discs do crash. - Original Message - From: "David Ferrin" To: Sent: Monday, February 11, 2013 1:04 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Automatically Compacting OE Folders It is on by default and so far as I know you can't turn it off and to be honest if you can I do not recommend it. To do it manually hit alt + F and then the letter F twice in succession. Furthermore, the areas which used to be links, such as for location, buy it now only, and the various categories which show up when I search for something, are no longer read as links, but as some kind of inaccessible links. I also can't use the text boxes for price. They give me their own range, and I can't change them. This has been going on for over a month now. It used to work with Firefox, then stopped. So I used Internet Explorer. But that doesn't work now, and neither does Comet Bird. About three days ago, I discovered that I was now able to use the price text boxes, but I haven't tried the other things. This happened on multiple computers, so I'm sure it's not a virus. I'm using Windows XP and the latest version of NVDA. When I mentioned this to other blind people, none of them had this problem. What is going on here and has it been fixed?
