[Blind-Computing] OpenBook 9 & Printing Envelopes With Word 2007

2013-04-06 Thread Margaret Thomas

Good Morning:

I'm trying to make sure a very important envelope has been printed
correctly using Word 2007 on a 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium machine
running OpenBook 9 and JAWS 14, but not the version that apparently came
out the other day.

OpenBook has reported all my efforts printing the envelopes with the
return address as one long horizontal line and the same for the delivery
address. As a test, I typed the delivery address the proper way on a
new Word document, printed it, and scanned it. OB reported it as one
long horizontal line. I also scanned an envelope with the return
address pre-printed that was included with a bill and OpenBook also
reported it as one long horizontal line.

I think there is some OpenBook setting I need to adjust and tried
unchecking recognize columns. I hope to get sighted assistance over to
look at the envelopes I've printed out to see if I have printed them
correctly, but, in any event, need to know how to get OpenBook 9 to scan
more accurately.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Margaret

Sighted assistance confirmed that the envelope was printed correctly, so
it seems like my thought that some setting in OpenBook 9 needs to be
changed for more accurate scanning seems to be correct. Any help
figuring out which setting change is needed to get it to scan and
accurately report the information on an envelope would be wonderful.

Thanks,

Margaret

2013-04-06 Thread Gerald Levy

Actually, I have experienced the same problem myself using Open Book 7.0.2.
I notice that addresses, regardless of whether they are printed on an
envelope or at the top of a letter are read by Open Book as a single line
rather than separate lines. I am not aware of any setting that can be
changed to correct this behavior. As long as you hit the Enter key after you
type each line of the address, it should print correctly.

[Blind-Computing] Private Internet Access Jaws accessibility

2013-04-06 Thread Cristobal
Hello list,

So I was looking at some VPN solutions and came across one called Private
Internet Access. Lifehacker and PC World give it some good reviews. Pricing
seems reasonable too. Anyway, like always, the question is if Jaws will work
with it and anything I may have to install on my end. Has anyone in fact
used this service and can they speak to any accessibility issues they may
have encountered or is it workable with Jaws? That or can someone recommend
an alternative VPN service? Paid is fine too as long as it works. I am aware
of Tor, but haven't tried it out either.

I'm running the latest JFW and this would be on Windows 7 and 8 machines.

Any observations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

hmmm, this is only a notion, but a company called amber made a lot of
converters for unusual cross format transfers. they sort of try to fill in
such types of gaps, you might want to contact them and see if they have
anything now, and/or talk to there support personnel to see if you might put
a bug in there ear to make one.

the only other thing I can think of is to do screen copies, and then paste
into either a .pdf or a image file type and read it with something like open
book and print it in .txt when converted with it

those are the only things I can think of, get it into a OCR friendly format
and then scan it.

take care and good luck.

oops, didn't read that right, sorry had two teeth extracted yesterday, and
the pain pills are knocking me flat.

ok, already in .pdf, so open it in acrobat, and see if the save as text
option is available, if not you can scan it in open book, Kurzweil, or any
of the other OCR programs, .pdf is usually one of the many available
openable file types in these programs. and if you look a version or two back
you can usually find abbey fine reader for about 70.00 dollars

This mouse has an edge-exposed wheel between the left & right buttons. When I

I have searched the web for an electronic copy of a user manual for this mouse

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Symantec and JAWS Screen Reader

Hello Folks,

This is something spectacular I came across at my work place and thought I
should share it with you guys.

I work on a Windows 7 OS PC with JAWS 14 installed on it. Now, this PC is
behind a corporate firewall and has Symantec protection I believe corporate
edition. When the IT department installed JAWS on this PC there were initial
glitches in installing it and activating it to the full version. Had
something to do with Administrative privilages. Anyhow, this has nothing
with the concern of this email.

I started experiencing iratic behavior from JAWS on applications that were
of my daily use. For example we use Microsoft Communicator 2007 as an
internal communication tool or IM client as some of you may know it as. JAWS
fails to announce the status of my contact in the contacts list, there is
absolutely no clue if the contact is away, in a meeting, busy or just
offline. Then on some web pages it failed to read elements like buttons and
some links. In excel when I switch to the worksheet from another
application, by default the home tab is already selected so I need to press
the escape key before doing anything on the sheet. Sometimes, JAWS would
just get paranoid and start reading arbid text from an application which is
no longer in focus.

This made me get really frustrated and I wrote to Freedom Scientific. They
gave me a work around for my communicator issue, unfortunately it did not
work as expected. I did a little research on the net and found out the
culprit is the Symantec protection software that is blocking JAWS
functionality. Here is what Symantec had to say on their website:

You can create file exceptions for Tamper Protection. You might want to
create a Tamper Protection exception if Tamper Protection interferes with a
known safe application on your client computers. For example, Tamper
Protection might block an assistive technology application.

Source: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content

&id=HOWTO80927

Now my question is why does one have to got to go through this extra effort
in adding JAWS or for that matter any other screen reader in the exemption
list of applications in Symantec? Should not they have already figured out
that this will create hinderances to any blind user in a corporate
environment? Why can't Freedom Scientific OR Symantec take some ownership in
creating a more accessible environment for a blind user when it comes to
security.

Lucky for me, I have some technical knowledge to back up my researching
ability, imagine a novice blind computer user, he/she would have to go
through a lot of trouble to demystify this strange behavior of his installed
copy of JAWS. This is of most concern because there is no mention of this
issue being reported by Freedom Scientific on their site. I am going to dig
their forums to further investigate this claim of mine.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] firefox problems.

Hi all.

Firefox updated on my work pc this morning.

Now I can't access several critical sites.

Does anybody have a copy of Firefox 19 that they would be willing to upload
to dropbox for me.

As far as I know this is perfectly legal under the Firefox license.

If not I apologize for this message.

Thanks.
