I don't believe you need a tech for this. All you need is someone sighted.
When they turn on the computer have them hit f8 repeatedly after hitting
the
power button. Some options should come up one being boot order or
something
like that. They will know when they see it. It could also very possibly
just
be doing a scan disk. Try just letting it go for a bit and seeing if it
comes back on. Give it at least a half an hour.

only way I could stop the DVD was by pressing Alt-F4 to close this

One good way to return the snappiness to Windows is to format the hard
disk and install everything fresh! I know that sounds like a lot of work,
but probably not as time consuming as attempting to tweak a slow system.

Hello everyone.

I can expect to wait about three minutes for this process to happen, and
that seems quite unnecessary. I'd like to keep this thing going for as
long as possible, and I've managed to eliminate a number of unnecessary
processes, services, etc, and recently with the help of CCleaner removed
a bunch of junk from my system which seems to have resulted in an
appreciable increase in speed. The bootup process still seems to take an
age, though, and it's a little frustrating to me that I can't see what's
going on at bootup to determine what might be making it so sluggish. My
work machine is also running XP, isn't much newer than this system, has a
bunch of network drive/connections to establish and yet still boots in
thirty seconds or less. I know there's a step by step bootup option you
can enable so that you can see each step in the boot process as it
happens and select whether you want to run this or that process, but that
doesn't do me a lot of good as Jaws is always one of the last things to
run. So, is there any way of making a bootlog that has the same
information which I can read in a textfile? How about any tweaks or
suggestions users here might have? I've found a number of useful sites,
including process libraries that explain the function of various system
and non-essential processes that might load at startup, but I'm wondering
if anybody here might have any useful info to pass along. In addition to
increasing bootup speed, I'm also keen on ways I might be able to
decrease the general load on my CPU to make the system run a little more
smoothly. I am certainly aware of the need to do defragmentations on the
hard drive, but maybe the one that comes with Windows isn't the best
solution out there? I've heard this from other folks, but I have no idea
what programme i ought to use for this as I've always used the native
Windows defrag. How about msconfig? I know many people don't use it,
preferring a third party alternative...what of folks on the list here?

Thanks!

Hello,
In JAWS:
Go to the JAWS menues, options, basics and then:
if it's windows XP disable the checkbox automatically start JAWS.
If it's windows Vista or 7, press on the automatically start JAWS... button
and do the following:
uncheck the check box start JAWS at the logon screen or something like
that.
Then, press tab and uncheck the checkbox start JAWS after logon for all
users
Then, press tab and move to the combo box start JAWS after logon for
current user.
You can set it to use all users setting.
Then, it will start or not (according to the previous checkbox).
Or, you can set this to never.
Then, press ok and ok again.

All done!

But, I no a lot about the Mac and VO.

Yes, I doo recommend it.
For scanning software:
You can run windows applications on the Mac.
You can install Windows directly on it using a software witch comes with
every Mac called Bootcamp.
Then, you can install JAWS and use your coppy of Openbook on it.
The other method to run Windows on a Mac, is by using a software called
VMWare Fusion.
It's a virtual machine software, but it is not free.
So, Yes. I do recommend it.

Agreed there is no fee like jaws charges. However a Mac book is quite
expensive. In the end right now at least it is comparable to buying a
windows based machine and jaws. The speech however is very good. I
have a sighted friend who has an older one and it sounded good when she
tested it.

Is anyone out there a MAC user? I need to get a new laptop computer
and I have read that the MAC comes with it's own screen reader, that
Apple automatically updates it, and there is no fee like JAWS charges
for its new software versions. What I don't know is:
 1. Is the MAC user friendly for a blind person?
 2. Is there scanning software that is compatible with the MAC (I
currently use Open Book, but this is not compatible with the MAC.

Any and all advice including pros and cons would be greatly appreciated.

Arianna, you can't move it from Other to Network Adaptors yourself,
Windows has to do that for you. I am sure if you arrow to the adaptor in
Other Devices and press the context menu key and arrow to Properties and
press ENTEr and then read the ensuing dialog with the JAWS cursor (or
equivalent) you will find that no driver is installed. No matter what it
won't be recognized in the Network Adaptors section until a proper
adaptor is installed. From your description it almost sounds like a
Netgear WPN111 which most certainly requires a driver to be installed.

Re: [Blind-Computing] system tray and punctuation

2011-01-23 Thread Adi Kushnir

Hi,
about the JAWS email question:
open the jaws window/menu, go to options, then voices, then voice
adjustment...

after that, tab several times until you here punctulation combo box.
Change the value to some or none and then press Ok.
If you never made changes to your voice profiles, press save as, then Give
your profile a name or accept the default one, and then press Ok.

Then, answer yes to the default profile question if you want.
Now press escape and return to your program.
This is only if you didn't made changes to your voices.
If you did changed some voice settings previously, just press ok or enter
after changing the punctulation and return to your program.
If you are using JAWS 9 and older, open the options menu, go to voices, and
then, global adjustment...

then, tab and change the punctulation to none or some and press OK.

regards,

Adi Kushnir.
