Re: [Blind-Computing] IE 8 or Firefox

2009-04-11 Thread Maria Chapman

Hi.

I'm not going to tell you whether or not you should switch. I'll just
tell you why I use fire fox and then you can decide. I really like some
of the add ons like web vissum and another one that lets you create
short cuts on your desk top. Web visum is great though, no more waiting
for someone sighted to help with the capcher. It also seems to be a
little more stable on my system. I also like the feature where you can
set fire fox to open at whatever page you were on when you closed it. I
don't know if IE8 has these features but anyway there you go.

know my experiences with it. I was not even aware that there were scripts
out there for it, so perhaps it would work better now. I agree that Outlook
2007 is a pain, I don't really like it, but that's what I'm stuck with if I
don't use thunderbird. sometimes it is slow, and there seems to be no rhyme
or reason for the delays. It must be a memory hog like you say.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Using Thunderbird with JAWS

Hi,

I've been getting really frustrated using Outlook 2007 with JAWS 10. The
program slows down my computer a lot, produces error messages when I close
it, and gobbles up lots of memory.

Anyway, this led me to check out Mozzilla Thunderbird with JAWS.

I noticed that there weren't any scripts written for Thunderbird, but the
program seems to be reasonably accessible anyway.

I'm wondering if other folks are using Thunderbird with JAWS and what kind
of success and/or problems people are experiencing before I totally make the
switch (or not).

Some things I noticed right off:

- The Tool bars aren't very accessible (although there are menu
pull-downs for most of these functions).

- Although I can arrow down the list of mail folders, this list
doesn't seem to be navigable by first letter. Thus, one needs to arrow than
the list rather than navigate by first letter. This is a pain if there are
lots of folders.

- Attachments aren't readily sensed by JAWS, although one can use
the JAWS cursor or the menu pull-downs to see if there are any attachments,
but one needs to look (and expect attachments).

Some nice things are:

- The program is very responsive, even when there are lots of mail
items in one folder.

- Using JAWS, certain messages can't be read without performing
several steps to open up the message in a web browser. These messages open
up and are readable just like any other message in Thunderbird.

Anyway, I'm interested to know what others are finding and how frustrated
folks may be with Outlook 2007. I've seen my memory usage with Outlook 2007
go from 60,000 kb when first opening Outlook to over 500,000 kb if Outlook
2007 is left open for about a day. Not good, Microsoft!

Thanks.

n Pete
