Hi
If you have a wireless access point you should be able to connect it at
your relatives house. However, You may have to ask them to adjust their
firewall and other security to let you access the internet from their

Hi
It seems to me that there is a thumb drive version of SA To Go. Does
anyone have any experience with this? Is it dependant on the

wonderful to have a thumb drive version that was truly independent from

Both types of memory are critical, but the fact is that hard drives
 are
getting so reasonably priced and with such high capacity that they
 might
 be
considered a secondary concern. An 80 GB hard drive is hardly a big
 deal
 any more.

On the other hand RAM is quite another matter. For one thing,
 Microsoft
publishes low end specs for minimum configuration for running the
 various
Operating Systems. Microsoft tells you that Vista can run on 512 MB
 RAM
 and
that may be true, but it isn't going to be any sort of whiz. You'd be
better off with 2 GB of RAM if you can afford that because the memory
 chips
 are still quite costly.

Personally, I have Windows 2000 and the published minimum RAM to
 support
this OS was 256 MB, but I have 512 MB RAM and I'm very glad that I
 doubled
the low-end requirement. Even at that the PC seems to bog down at
 times
 so
1 GB RAM wouldn't be overkill on my system neither.

 HTH

 Kathy:

I agree with those list members who have recommended as much memory as you
could possibly afford. A 250 or so gig hard drive is more than adequate.
I would also recommend two gigs of memory with Vista. Because of the
sound stacking introduced in JAWS 9, you may even operate with one gig of
RAM but two gig will be an industry standard particularly with Vista.
When I was under contract with Axiom Resources Management of Falls Church
Virginia, we always used to say that memory was the electronic equivalent
to gold. I own a Dell laptop with two gig of RAM and that has been
adequate for me. With a 250 or 260 gig hard drive you could if the need
arises add two gig of virtual memory. I just reminded myself that I need
to review the procedures for adding virtual memory to my system as well.
 Good luck.

Re: [Blind-Computing] black barries and jaws

2008-02-24 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
I do not know if they are JAWS compatible or not but there is a program
I use on my cell phone called MSP. It allows me to access every menu on my
Motorola Q. cell phone. The Q. is a smart phone. The software company also
makes talking software for Black Berries.
I don't mean to be advertising for this software. It is just the only
cell phone speech software I am aware of.

hi all. Right now I am listening to the CBC Show The Sunday Edition. They
are talking about Black Berries and how much they are used. I am just
wondering weather these things are accessible for blind people? and if you
can use jaws on them? I am not thinking of purchasing one since I am not
working etc but I am just wondering how accessible they are from a blind
perspective. Many Thanks. from Mich Verrier from New Liskeard Ontario

a tiny, but mostly functional PC (just not 100% sure re: the name if it

Hi Rick,
I appreciate the information on the G. standard verses the N standard.
If I use the G. version it should be able to connect to my sisters laptop

If you are going to invest in any wireless devices,
choose the G standard, because it doesn't limit you to one specific brand
 of
 devices.
The N, standard, has not been standardized and adopted by all hardware
manufacturers yet, and therefore limits you to available devices
 supporting
 itd.

Wireless N standard is just coming out. It is just in a form like beta.
 Most
 laptops do not have
this, but yes, it is better, much better. If you want a laptop to get fast
 wireless
speeds, you want to get a laptop that supports the wireless standard.
 Otherwise, don't
get the expensive router, as the standard may change by the time the new
 release is ready.

 Hi there,
 You'll need:
 * A wireless router (the best ones I know are
from Linksys, Dlink and Netgear). Most
routers support 802.11ong (some newer ones
 support 802.11tion).
 * WiFi component (either a USB dongle or a
 built-in WiFi chip).
I think this is suffice for this post.
There is a handy wizard called Wireless
Network Setup Wizard under XP Service Pack
 2. Under Vista, it would be under Network
and Sharing Center under Control Panel.
 Cheers,
 Joseph

You should have that option in the, files of type save dialog.
When you do the control s to save, or the f12 to save as, tab one time to,
files of type and down arrow to, Word 97-2003 document.
Then continue to save as normal.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Disappearing menu in Norton Internet security

Hi
I use Norton's systems works and I found that I need to go directly to
a program in Norton's called navstub.exe. When you activate this program
you can do most of your settings in a JAWS friendly setting. I do need to
mention that this works on my desk top computer but not on my laptop. Any
ideas on why there is a difference would be appreciated. Any way doing a
disk search for navstub.exe is sure worth a try. I believe Norton's gives

 Hi Tammy,

I checked out the web site you sent along, and, quite frankly, the prices
seem a bit high, in my opinion.

If I were you, I would check out Staples, and Best Buy, as I believe they
are much lower in terms of pricing.

I saw many drives there for over 175, and even one that was selling at
 159,
which I know is going for 129 here in Canada at Best Buy.

Another web site that was suggested was Buy.com, which is another great
source for items of this nature. There was a sale on Terabyte drives for
 just under 175 last week.

Just something you might want to consider.

One point I'd like to point out, is that if you go to the larger chain
stores like best buy and staples, they get their items at bulk discounts,
something smaller stores aren't able to do, so their prices are usually
 much
 cheaper.

I would also like to point out that you can also get an internal hard
 drive
at a lower price, then purchase a hard drive enclosure for around 22 to 30
dollars, which you then take apart, then place your internal drive inside
it, and voila, it becomes an external drive.

As you may or may not know, internal drives are usually cheaper than
external drives, and they're pretty easy to assemble now a days.

You should also be prepared to format the drive before you use it, unless
the ad specifically says that it's plug and play and ready for use as soon
 as you plug it in.

This may or may not affect the pricing, depending on where you buy it.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

 Victor

Thank you for the information. It is good advice. Here is what I would like
to do. I have a number of hard drives from my old computers, some dating
from the late nineteen eighties, and I would like to find an enclosure to
fit them so I can extract some of my old data. I have know idea what I need

3.5 inch drives.

The term, IDE, stands for intergrated drive electronics.
The following terms actually refer to the same type of drive, they are
 just
 different standards:
 IDE, ATA, PATA
This is the typical drive found in most computers these days, with the
exception of custom built, and high-end server or gaming machines.
If you purchase one of these enclosures, you will need the same type of
 drive to place inside.
The transfer rate noted, will do just fine.
As far as the transfer rate is concerned, the speed is irrelevant , since
any difference will most likely not be noticed by the user.
External hard drives are normally meant for backup use, and not as drives
 to
 work from.
The wake-up capability is a feature of that specific enclosure, and it is
 not necessary for normal operation.
I can't comment any further on that specific feature, since I have not
 used
 it.
When buying an external hard drive enclosure, keep it simple.
The more features you involve in the process, the greater the chance of
 failure.
Find an enclosure to match the drive you want to use as an external drive,
make sure that it has USB 2.0 capability, and a power switch, and comes
 with
the necessary power supply, USB cable may be optional.
It really is that simple! smile

 Hi Tammy,

I checked out the web site you sent along, and, quite frankly, the
 prices
seem a bit high, in my opinion.

If I were you, I would check out Staples, and Best Buy, as I believe
 they
are much lower in terms of pricing.

I saw many drives there for over 175, and even one that was selling at
 159,
which I know is going for 129 here in Canada at Best Buy.

Another web site that was suggested was Buy.com, which is another
 great
source for items of this nature. There was a sale on Terabyte drives
 for
 just under 175 last week.

Just something you might want to consider.

One point I'd like to point out, is that if you go to the larger chain
stores like best buy and staples, they get their items at bulk
 discounts,
something smaller stores aren't able to do, so their prices are
 usually
 much
 cheaper.

I would also like to point out that you can also get an internal hard
 drive
at a lower price, then purchase a hard drive enclosure for around 22
 to
 30
dollars, which you then take apart, then place your internal drive
 inside
it, and voila, it becomes an external

Yes, I would agree that the 2006 version was more JAWS friendly but 2007 and
2008 do seem to be accessible. Most of the features on the opening screen
are only accessible through the JAWS cursor. A person must navigate by line
and word to find the place to click.

 Hello Marc:

Although I use norton's 2007 anti virus program, and have been doing so
 over
the past year since February, I find that if their's somethingthat norton
has detected which requires my immediate attention, when I try to use the
jaws cursor where it says too go too the details too click on, I can't
 seem
to locate any of those features. I even tried to route the jaws cursor to
the pc's cursor, and have had no luck even doing that. I believe the 2006
version of the program was or at least to me, easier to use, and much more
 accessible.

Hi
I did the download from the website for my Norton's. ThenI wrote a
couple of quick scripts for myself just to automate doing live up date but
they aren't especially spectacular. You can also buy the down load version
of Norton's where they send you a disk later.
I am glad to find another Norton's user. Any thing I can do to help
Please let me know.

 Thanks for the info here..
Isn't using the Jaws cursor one of the basics ya learn way back there
 first
 getting Jaws??
Well, it was for me anyways...

Now did you buy this 2007 version or just download it off Norton's web
 site?
I asked a friend of mine who uses Nod 32 and he said their newer versions
aren't users friendly. So from the looks of things one has to stay with
 what
they already have or use the freeby AVG or I guess buy the security suite
which is what I would do, if I couldn't use Norton...

Hi Deanne,
To test where a script is installed and working, follow the following
stets.
1. open the program you installed scripts for.
2. Do an insert f2 and select key board options from the menu that opens.
3. when you press enter on the keyboard options, a list box will appear. you
should be sitting on the right option for your program. It may even have
part of the program name in its title.
4. Next tab key once. you should be able to up and down arrow through this
list of JAWS commands for your program.
5. Choose a command you would like to try and memorize its key combination.
6. press alt F. and select exit from the menu.
7. you will be sitting back in your program. Next try the key stroke
combination you have memorized in the previous step.
8. if all has gone well, you will be able to activate the function you
wanted with the key stroke and your script is working.

Hello, my name is Deanne (pronounced Dee Ann) and I am new to this list.
I am trying to use Yahoo Messenger and wondered if anyone could help me
out. I know there are scripts to download that will make it work better
with JAWS. I downloaded the script--I think it was the right one--but I'm
not sure that it installed to the right place because YL seems to be
working about the same for me. I'm running JAWS 7.5 right now. Does JAWS

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Richard Justice,
Actually, after looking around the Microsoft website yesterday I was
unable to find any special pricing for students. This being said I am not
very familiar with this site either. So, perhaps some one else has better
information than I do.

 Hi
I was told by the salesman when I bought my laptop that I should
wait until MS Office 2007 comes on sale before buying a copy. My trial
version runs out in January and Microsoft is asking $149 for the
 student
addition. So, I am wondering where I can beet this price? For a
 college
 student the cheaper the better.

[Blind-Computing] Non functioning formfields

[Blind-Computing] Windows defender vista and JAWS 82

2007-10-18 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
I am using JAWS 8.2 and vista home premium. What I wonder is how does one

program from actively defending my system to just occasionally scanning my
machine. Any ideas on how to do this is appreciated. I was unable to access the
options on the programs open screen even with the JAWS curser.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Setting language display in vista

2007-10-14 Thread torgersonenator
Hi Rick,
That did the trick. I was finally able to set the language to English,
then the JAWS authorization program was happy. One odd side note. When I
went to Microsoft and tried to down load back grounds for the E-Mail program
I received a message stating that JAWS was not authorized for this
language... again. Also the back grounds did not download. I am OK with this
but it just makes me wonder what is the computer thinking?

Control panel and then regional settings. there is a combo box tab to it
and select English. then tab to ok and press enter. I think that will do
 it for you.

 Hi
I need guidance in setting the language display in vista. The person
who was helping me set up the computer tried there best to set the
 language
to English but the calendar and date appeared to stay in something like
Hebrew. Also, when I tried to authorize JAWS I received the message that I
need to contact freedom scientific to gain authorization for this
 language.
Thus I can not authorize JAWS until I change the basic language on my
computer to English. How do I go about changing the computers language in
 vista?
 Thank you for your help.

I have been considering buying a new lap top computer so I can be more

Does she have a logon screen set up on her computer? If not, it is
 probably
wanting to install the video intercept.
Reboot and do an alt d, then the letter I and press enter.
Now do an an alt f4 and restart your PC.

I finally have JAWS installed on the laptop. So, this morning I go and do

[Blind-Computing] Opening Port in gateway two wire firewall

2007-08-29 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
The DSL modem we use in the house is a gateway 2700 which has a built in
fire wall. Although this explains why I get such good results from my windows
fire wall, it does leave me with another problem. I need to open two ports for
a particular VOIP system I enjoy using. I found how to access the modem fire
wall but now I have a new trouble. It gives me a list of computers that are
attached to the computer and I must choose mine. How do I know which computer
is mine? Does anyone have any experience/advice on configuring the firewall in
the gateway 2700?

 Hi
The DSL modem we use in the house is a gateway 2700 which has a built
in fire wall. Although this explains why I get such good results from my
windows fire wall, it does leave me with another problem. I need to open
two ports for a particular VOIP system I enjoy using. I found how to
access the modem fire wall but now I have a new trouble. It gives me a
list of computers that are attached to the computer and I must choose
mine. How do I know which computer is mine? Does anyone have any
experience/advice on configuring the firewall in the gateway 2700?

Hi
I have now configured the software for my DSL firewall to the best of
my ability. Still my VOIP program is unable to receive the incoming
connections/audio. Now, what should I do? I have run out of leads in my
research. One thing I do know is that when I switch to dial up the VOIP

Hi
I don't know the direct link but I am using Adobe 7.0 It needed to be
configured to work with JAWS but after that it does a good job. There is a
slight delay when you move to the next page and Adobe is converting the text

I need to get Adobe for my system to read a document for school. Is there

when I install something to the system will it cause any problems with
 jfws

 Thanks for the help.

Not sure if this is right/helpful, but try looking on the start menu -
settings - control panel - printers and faxes and you may find something
there. Only problem is I'm not sure if this instance of a 'fax' thing
 will
also be needed by your other pieces of software, but chances are they
 don't
as such use the built-in stuff.

 Hi:
Since installing DSL on this XP computer every time my phone rings the
 fax
program that is a part of XP (IN Accessories, communications, fax) tries
 to
pickup the call as a incomming fax. I don't need this program, as I have
 two
other fax programs (MightyFax the Fax program in K1000 version 11).
 Does
anyone know how to disable it? I have looked inthe startup manager and

add remove programs, in the control section and can't find it. It is not
 listed as fax or msfax.

Re: [Blind-Computing] readiris pro and screen readers

2007-08-21 Thread torgersonenator
Hi Rick,
I took the demo version of readiris PRO. for a test drive yesterday and
found the following. First the price for personal use is $129.00 US plus
shipping. Next one can set it for multiple page scanning but it wants to
scan a new page every ten seconds. I over came this by hitting pause between
pages. This way I could take my time getting the next page settled. It took
me a while to find out how to exit the multiple page scan mode. I had to
navigate to the OK button using the JAWS key. In the long run I am pretty
sure that I could apply my limited JAWS scripting skills to the task of
creating a short cut key for this task.
Over all it seems like a good system at a reasonable price.

Mark

Re: [Blind-Computing] TV tuners

2007-08-16 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
I am running a computer with a built in TV and FM radio tuner. I am
running windows XP media addition. I have managed to use the FM radio but
not the TV tuner. The trouble I have is that I can not really access the
features in the software for the tuner. I would love to find some accessible
software for the TV and Radio card.

God bless,

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] TV tuners

 Hi Ariana,

As far as I know, TV Tuners come in an external box, or internal card
 version.

I don't think I've ever seen them in USB stick format, but it has been a
 while since I've seen these.

I actually have a client who is asking for one on her computer, and was
joyful to find out that the price of these puppies has dropped
 significantly
 since I dealt with them.

The last one I owned was the ATI All In Wonder, and it allowed you to have
different video inputs to your computer, such as S-video, RCA, Firewire,
 and
 other connections.

Once plugged into the ports, the card would act as the interface between
 the
computer and the device. It would also have the added functionality of
being able to tune in analog signals from your cable line, or satellite
 source.

You would, of course need a program that would be able to receive and
extrapolate the signal into a viewable format, and I really can't say if
such a program exists that is compatible for the blind or visually
 impaired.

It would be a great thing if someone knew of an accessible program, and
could send that information to the list.

 Hope this helps.

 Victor

Re: [Blind-Computing] Windows media player and music match

2007-08-15 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
The trouble probably is that the wrong program has decided to be your
default player on the files you like to play. So, one needs to reassign the
windows media player as your default player for these types of files. I had
a similar probablem with a text editor. I am trying to remember how to
reassign a file type though.

[Blind-Computing] Scanning text books

2007-08-12 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
I am currently going to college and of course most of the recorded
material is O about five years out of date. I did have success scanning a text
book in to my computer and using OCR on it so I could read it. Unfortunately I
don't usually have the time to do an entire text book. I am wondering if there
is a good place I could send a text book that would scan it to a computer
document for me? If so how much would be the charge for such a thing? Please
feel free to send me an answer off list at:

[Blind-Computing] Playing copywrite protected files in windows media player

2007-08-11 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
I have been playing Old Time Radio Programs from the radio classics
subscription center for some time now with no problem. Suddenly now when I
download a new program from there site my player refuses to get the license
like it used to and demands that I upgrade my player components. When I try to
follow the links it says that it has updated my player but I still can't play
my audio program. Now, I tried updating the windows media player with out going
through the radio classics site and it says that it is already running the
latest version. So, any ideas on how to set things right would be appreciated!
Is there some setting in WMP or IE that I need to check on?

Hi
Well, the strange thing is that the same website has old time radio
programs that it streams and these do not require a key. These streams work
flawlessly. So, I don't know what to think. WMP just is not getting the
license key from the site. I haven't seen any thing in the WMP options on
this either but I may have missed something.

Are you using another program in conjunction with wmplayer and ie that
 maybe
you're using a free trial evaluation type of thing? Maybe that ran out.
That's the only thing I can think of.

Mark, you mentioned that you sometimes respond to all on the list, and
sometimes to just the sender of the post. Will you please share with me
 how
you respond to the individual sender?
If you want to reach me by phone and leave a detailed voicemail message

Hi
I have a wireless mouse and I think I will start looking for some type
of hard case for it too.

God bless,

I've heard at Tupperware parties that you can use Tupperware for all kinds
of things. That is a really neat idea to cut a hole in the container for
the cord and then put the lid on, making it impossible to hit the mouse.
If you want to reach me by phone and leave a detailed voicemail message
 call
773-572-6206 and hit pound as soon as you hear my voice.

Re: [Blind-Computing] converting pdf's to tiffs

2007-08-04 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
The one work around I can think of is to print out the tif and scan the
printed image with an OCR program. This quite a bit of extra work if you are
receiving a lot of faxes.

Mark

[Blind-Computing] Easy Nortons anti virus settup

2007-08-04 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
Norton's anti virus 2007 does have more of a challenging interface than
earlier versions. Here is one trick I learned by trial and error. Click on My
computer then select your main drive. next locate and open the programs
folder. In this folder locate and open the Norton's anti virus folder. Next
locate the file NAVStub.exe and open it. This appears to give easy access to
many of the settings that are difficult to reach from the standard interface. I
have been considering creating a short cut to the NAVStub.exe file so I can
have easy access.

God bless,
Mark
