Hi,

I am thinking of going back to school to obtain a master degree on-line.
I

see many of the universities use Blackboard to host their on-line content.
I am wondering if this interface is accessible for one using a screen
reader? I am using a windows 7 home premium 64 bit system. I have Jaws,
System Access, and NVDA as screen readers I can use. If the program is
accessible are there any tips in navigating the program? I thank you for
any information in this matter.

Jamie

Jamie,
I just completed a degree through Charter Oak State College and they use
Blackboard. For the most part, BB is accessible. One area where I ran into
problems is in the online exams. If an exam is timed, the constantly
updating on-screen timer steals focus away from Jaws and makes taking the
test using a screen reader impossible. The school is using an older version
of BB (version 9 SP 7) and the software is up to version 9 SP 11. Many
screen reader enhancements were made in SP 10. So, you will need to know
which version of BB is being used in order to judge what your ultimate
experience will be. In my case, I needed a sighted person to read/scribe the
online tests. The untimed tests were fine.

Also, navigating the discussion forums can be cumbersome.
If you have any other questions, please ask.
BTW, which school are you considering for your Masters?

John

Hi Jamie,
Yes, Blackboard is accessible with Jaws. I completed an online degree in 2011.
Feel free to contact me off list for any bumps in the road you come across.
Best of luck! Smile.
