This might sound dumb What is the difference between a text file and a rich
text one?

Well here goes the old college try as the saying is phrased. A rich text 
file does contain a small amount of formatting like a full blown word 
processor IE highlights ETC. A simple text file contains nothing of the kind 
at all.
