Re: [Blind-Computing] Downloading an Ebook in PDF

2011-01-07 Thread LaMcAs
Sounds like you are opening the download directly with Adobe Reader? This
would be done by using the open option.

Try saving the file before you open it, if you tab you should tab past the
open button to save and then see if this makes a difference.

When downloading anything from the internet you should always choose save
thus the file would be checked on completion and at least then you have thw
whole file still on your pc whereas if you open it the file is in a state
that you have no control over.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Downloading an Ebook in PDF

Good day,
I've attempted to download a particular Ebook several times today. I
believe it is the number of pages that is causing the problem? Jaws tells
me it is processing page five of one hundred forty-nine, than announces it
has reached six percent, ... then I'm looking at the original link on the
webpage I was trying to download from. It is one of some eight EBooks I
have downloaded and read today, none of the others gave me any trouble, but
none of the others was more than seventy pages. Is there a setting I can
change or some other way to make it give me access to the entire document?

Thanks for any and all assistance.
Yours sincerely,
Joy

Dear Larry,
I'd prefer saving it, and I do generally save files from the net before opening
for all the excellent reasons you mentioned. However, if that is an option
offered in this case I can't find it. Clicking on the link immediately opens
the Adobe window asking about infer reading order from document etc. If there
is a way to by pass this and save the book I'd like to know it please.
Although simply saving it won't solve the problem, Adobe still won't read it
since it is too big.

Sometimes, with jaws, you need to route jaws to PC, and then use it's
right-click button/keystroke to invoke the necessary context menu for
downloading something, or else, generally, after you have activated the link
into a new window - shift + enter - and then closed that one again, the
applicatons/right click key on the keyboard will then activate the right
context menu.

not "prepare the document" because its too large. If I could figure out how to

Hi Joy,
I've downloaded as many as 600 pages this way with no issues.
However, if your books have lots of graphics, it could take awhile
for it to process. Sometimes it stops telling me the percentage
processed, but if I alt tab away and then come back it will tell me
that the document is being processed.

Thank you Betsy, but I'm afraid in my case Adobe simply does not process the
document. As I explained in my original message after announcing that it has
processed page five of one hundred and seventy (in this particular instance) it
flicks back to the link on the original web page. Alt tab shows no window
relating to Adobe or downloads, ... I've seen it happen before but then they
were texts I wanted out of interest, this is work related and much more
important. Besides, I'd like to understand the problem, and prevent any
further repetitions.

Thank you very much, I look forward to checking out the link you sent.

I did save some documents as text using Adobe's own save feature, ...
unfortunately that put the files into Word Pad which had some regrettable
formatting results. Still they are accessible and I'm glad to be able to copy
the portions I need and Duxbury works well with them so its worth the extra
time to put the lines back together. But I'm definitely interested in
alternatives, thanks for sharing.

Thank you!, using the jaws cursor did the trick, ... finally
! However, I think Adobe is still going to stop at a given number of
pages and not "prepare the document" because its too large. If I could
figure out how to solve that problem as well then that would be
terrific!

Sometimes, with jaws, you need to route jaws to PC, and then use it's
right-click button/keystroke to invoke the necessary context menu for
downloading something, or else, generally, after you have activated the
link

into a new window - shift + enter - and then closed that one again, the
applicatons/right click key on the keyboard will then activate the right
context menu.

Dear Larry,
Tried that, at least the pressing the application key, there isn't any
save option. Well, there's a save as background, and some other equally
useless option that currently escapes me, but nothing useful. I'm
Frustrated!

2011-01-09 Thread Ann Marie Medlar
Thanks, I did install this PDF conversion to text software and it works
well. At first my PDF could not be converted but then I launched it again
from desktop and tabbed around and checked image and OCR software launched
and dropped my text file into the test folder.

I also use OpenBook but for free this software is amazing.

all programs and features or add and remove are found int eh control panel
depending on your version of Jaws
For instance in Jaws 11 or 12 it is the programs and features where all
can be found

Good luck

I often enough use Jamal Masry's PDF2TXT for stripping PDF files down to
text files,

http://www.empowermentzone.com/p2tsetup.exe

or in some PDF files you can just use it's own save as file menu item to
try saving them from there as text files.

Don't think you really need to uninstall, aside from maybe making sure any
shortcut points to the new path, so think you could most likely just move
the whole folder, etc.
