Re: [BlindHandyMan] installing air conditioner

2006-08-05 Thread clifford
Dear Robert:
I have never seen an air-conditioner that small. You might have someone
check again on the B. T. U. rating. A thousand watt unit would be possible,
but such a low B. T. U. rating would do well to air-condition a dog house.
A ten thousand B. T. U. window unit is a common size.
A good permanent instillation would involve filling in the space on each
side of the unit, preferably with material that is insulating. A lot of
heat can escape in winter, if these side spaces are not attended to
properly.

Yours Truly,

Clifford Wilson

Well, our unit is a 1000 BTU unit. I think it will fit our window, which is
in the kitchen. I plan to build a brace outside, angling from two 2 by 6
support posts with a flat 2 by 4 cross section on top. I think the window
may be a little wider than the air conditioner, in which case I will cut
some lengths of lumber to brace the window and keep out the critters. I have
a swamp cooler in the hall which will, I hope, aid in air circulation. I'll
keep the list updated as to how the installation goes.

[BlindHandyMan] Hooking Up an Ice Maker

2006-08-05 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
Even if your refrigerator comes with an automatic icemaker, you will need to
connect it to a water supply for it to make ice. While this is not a
particularly
difficult job, it requires some knowledge of plumbing and the use of tools.

Steps:
1.
Read the instruction manual that came with your refrigerator. Specific
instructions for hooking up the icemaker may be included.

2.
Locate the pipe nearest the icemaker that carries cold water. Most often,
this is the cold water pipe that connects to the kitchen sink.

3.
Install a t-valve in the main cold water line - not on the 3/8-inch faucet
tubes - so that there are two outlets: one to the sink and one to the
icemaker
supply line.

4.
Turn off the water.

5.
Put a sleeve and compression nut over the line that will supply the icemaker
in order to tightly connect it to the water line.

6.
Turn the water back on, and, holding the end of the tubing in the sink or
over a bucket, flush the line to remove any debris. Turn the water off
again.

7.
Snake the line from the water source to the icemaker connection, drilling
holes in the backs of cabinets if you have to in order to push the line
through.

8.
Find the icemaker inlet from the refrigerator and attach the other end of
the line using another compression nut.

9.
Turn the water back on.

10.
Throw away the first few containers of ice to be sure the line is completely
clean before you use the ice.

Tips:

If your old refrigerator had an icemaker and you are purchasing a new
refrigerator, use the old tubing to connect it to the icemaker if it is
still in good
condition.

Leave several feet of extra line so that you can move the refrigerator or
the icemaker for cleaning.

You can buy kits that contain all of the materials necessary for hooking up
an icemaker. Ask at your hardware supply store.

If you don't feel you're up to the task, a plumber can hook up the icemaker
for you.

[BlindHandyMan] How to Instal a Refridgerator

2006-08-05 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
Putting a refrigerator into place doesn't have to be difficult. Here are
some tips to make it easier.

Steps:
1.
Put the refrigerator on strips of carpet, pile-side down, and slide it into
place. Be sure to plug it in when you can reach the outlet with the cord.

2.
Remove the carpet.

3.
Lay a level across the top of the refrigerator to make sure it is level. If
it isn't, remove the front grille at the base of the fridge, tilt the
refrigerator
back and place a wooden block under the front edge. Find the levelling legs
on the front corners, and screw them up or down to level the unit.

4.
Check the level again, and repeat this process until the fridge is level.
(The door should shut by itself when opened to a 45-degree angle. If it
doesn't,
screw the levelling legs down enough so that it does.)

5.
Consult your owner's manual on how to hook up the icemaker, if applicable.

6.
Run the refrigerator for at least 4 hours before putting perishable food
into it.

Tips:

Put your refrigerator in a spot out of direct sunlight and away from
heat-producing appliances, such as your dishwasher and stove.

Put your owner's manual in a plastic bag, and tape it to the side of the
refrigerator so that you can find it when you need it.

Warnings:

Never move a refrigerator onto its side or back. It should always be
upright.

Don't use an extension cord with your fridge. The chances of electrocution
are high with any appliance that is used near liquids.

[BlindHandyMan] How to Fix an Iron that Leaves Spots on Fabric

2006-08-05 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
Does your washing machine seem possessed with the spirit of John Travolta
during his Saturday Night Fever days? It's likely that one or more of the
machine's
feet aren't touching the floor and it is rocking as it washes. To fix the
problem, you just need to level the machine.

Steps:
1.
Tilt the machine forward so the back feet are 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm)
off the ground, then set it back down. The back feet usually are
self-leveling--just
raising and lowering the machine like this will cause the feet to re-level
themselves.

2.
Place a sturdy 2-by-4 wood block under the center of the washer to prop it
up so you can access the front feet. You might have to move the washer out
from
the wall so that you can tilt it up enough to install the block.

3.
Loosen the locknut on each foot, using an adjustable wrench. Once the
locknuts are loose, you can adjust the feet.

4.
Remove the wood block, and if you moved the washer, set it back into
position against the wall.

5.
Place a carpenter's level across the front of the washer and check to see if
the machine is level side to side. If it isn't, use adjustable pliers to
rotate
one front foot or the other until the washer is level.

6.
Place your level perpendicular to the front of the machine and check to see
if the washer is level in this direction. If it is off, readjust each front
foot by the same number of turns until you reach level.

7.
Put the washer back on the wood block and retighten the locknuts, then if
necessary, push it back against the wall.

Overall Tips:

It's better to adjust the feet so they end up shorter, rather than longer.
The closer the machine is to the floor, the less likely it is to vibrate and
shake.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Project in my bacement

2006-08-05 Thread Jim Ruby
My stares comes down the middle of the bacement and it is on one of the
sides I want to build the wall. I will have access to under them through the
utility room on the other side of the room.

Thanks.

Hi Jim,

This will probably turn out to be a bigger job than you expect just because
it is small. It will use pretty well all of the usual frame building
techniques but not so much that you can be efficient with it.

Now I want to know if this wall is down the open side of the stairs and if
so, do you wish to access the space under the stairs?

Your description is good but I want to be sure I understand the task fully.
It sounds like there is an existing light switch and electrical outlet which

leads me to think that the construction is against an already existing wall.

Maybe you are talking of installing a light switch and plug in the new wall?

Hope I can be helpful to you.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Accessible OBD-II unit

2006-08-05 Thread R & S Enterprises
The accessible multimeter I use was purchased from a Canadian friend. Some
on the list have offerred to help in this. If no one chimes in you might
check the archives for a past posting. There is also one available in US
for something like $600 which is nuts. I don't know of any accessible car
code readers yet. Stuck with sighted help. I know it ain't always
available If you have the buck a factory service manual is best. Sighted
help or equipment to read text is needed. Ford products manuals are sold by
Helm co. I think they do others but don't have the info handy.

2006-08-05 Thread Cy Selfridge
No Cliff, I can not say that I have ever rolled around (intentionally) in a
gravel path. (LOL)
How about a compromise, a sand bar or sandy beach?
Perhaps a nice, cool sandy creek bank with a clear running stream?
Yup, no sharp pain and no Chiggers either (watch out for those
Mosquitoes though... Well, at least the Mosquitoes can be controlled with
some Citronella candles. It also (sorta) makes a nice mood light.

Clifford,
My good friend, somehow I do not think that you have ever had a chigger bite
you where you might want to frolic. (LOL)
When I moved back to Oklahoma in 1993 I was re-inoculated by the friendly
chiggers.
Around my waistband it looked like I had a double wreath of large grapes. I
had welts which were a good 3/4 inch across all around my poor body. (LOL)
Now, at that time I did not see the humor in all that.
Yup, you could rool in the grass if you wish but, for me, I think not.

Dear Robert:
Rocking on is a short time solution. In this area of the country, soils
tend to be acidic and applying lime is a necessary requirement in order to
obtain a good stand of grass. Instead of lime, one can cover the area with
lime stone/gravel and given enough time, a nice stand of grass or volunteer
weeds will appear.
This approach does yield a firm lawn, where vehicular traffic will not
mar up, mowing can be a problem if the blades are too low or the ground is
uneven, as you will get a shower of stones when the mower picks up the
underlying gravel.
One other issue should be pointed out, and that is your lady friends
will not enjoy frolicking in the gravel. Grass, according to reports, is a
much more friendly environment for socializing, even with the chiggers.

Yours Truly,

Clifford Wilson

All right now listen up close.
I have the salution to mowing the yard.
Pick up the phone and find the nearest gravel yard and have them come out
with the appropriate amount of what ever type of rock you would like to
replace your grass with.
Rock on.

I wonder too at the apparent quantity of frolics down there?

Think I will stick with our bears and moose! I know how to deal with them.

Rock on.

tend to be acidic and applying lime is a necessary requirement in order to
obtain a good stand of grass.

Rock on.

It doesn't look all that expensive to me either.

Hope this is useful to someone, most of it doesn't make a lot of sense to me
but for someone wanting to do a little business or a serious hobbyist it looks
to me like you would at least have some access to functions you don't presently
have.

Otis
A couple things to check here.
Yes absolutely put the type plugs in there that you have always used. Oil
change at this point is a good idea.
Make sure that your thermostat is working properly.
Also have them test the temp sending unit.
Your fan is electric so make sure it is coming on when the car gets up to
operating temperature.
You could have a bad fan or a bad sencer.
Also you can not rule out a bad water pump. I would hope that since they had
to drain the radiator that they would have flushed it.
It is a good idea to flush out the fins on the radiator.
You should do this from the back of the radiator with a garden hose. You
might want to do this when the car is cooled down.
sorry to state the obvious but make sure the coolant level is correct and
check for any leaks. and last but not least make sure that the radiator cap
is the proper pressure and is working correctly.
 Hope this helps.
You may want to write down these things and bring them to your mechanic so
you don't forget any thing.

If you have a 3.8 v6 which is likely one common drivability issue with them
is that the motor will oscillate at idle. what I mean is the RPM's will
fluctuate.
If this is the case after every thing else is working properly you should
test the fuel presher regulator is working properly. This is a very simple
test. any mechanic can do.
Let me know how this turns out.

The platinum plugs are not your problem. They were overly expensive, but will
work fine. Your car obviously has more serious problems that need to be
properly diagnosed and it is apparent to me that your service persons are
fairly incompetent.

Unfortunately there is no accessible auto service test equipment. You can buy
quality equipment and use a sighted person to tell you what is on the screen,
but you still have to know how to interpret the information. Nothing beats
qualified experience!

Good luck.

  Hi,

Other symptoms I see is when driving my father tells me that the car shakes
and rattles when stopping at a light or something. And The car still over
heats. Those are the only things I see. The only time I think the battery
was disconnected was when they did the head gaskets. I can give that a try.
When he says a tune up he means changing the oil again just in case some
left over coolant was still getting into the oil. They need to put my
original spark plugs that I purchase into my car because they're the only
one that the manufacture suggest to use with the car. They supposedly put
double platinum spark plugs in there and I think that's what making my car
shake and rattle when ever we stop at a light. I need those AC Delco's
because that's all I ever put in my car. I also notice that I need to
change my main belt because it's a little worn. This is a 1998 Buick
  Century.

Are you havingg other symptems with your car besides just the fact that your
check engine light is coming on?
  If so what are they?
As far as the check engine light is concerned, the first thing to find out
is was the battery ever disconectedl. If not then you need to disconnect the
battery for at least 3 minutes. This will reset the computer. What do they
  mean by a tune up?
I have not worked on the new cars but to my understanding a basic tune up is
  usually plugs and wires.
You may do things like air filter, PCV valve but out side of that the
computer is constantly adjusting thbings like air fuel mixture, Timing and
what else I am not sure.
What kind of car is this and what year is it?

I am not familiar with the OBD II equipment. For car problems a good
digital multimeter allong with some code reader will get you goiing on a lot
of problems. There appers to be two levels of code readers. There is a low
end one that goes around here for about $50 bucks and the top of the line
for $200 to $300 that does of course more. Other than that a service manual
for your perticular car will also help.

As far as spark plugs go. As long
as they are rated for the car in use they are just fine. Remember with some

As a general rule this is true but if you have always run the same type of
plugs in that car with good results I would not use any thing but what you
have always used.
Most people don't think much about there plugs but they can make more of a
differance than you would think. I once had an old Honda Accord with 220
thousand miles on it. She began to run like crap, it would hardly stay
running. I thought that the engine was about to give up the ghost. Well
since I was dead broke I thought I would put in some plugs in the hope that
I would at least get it running well enough that my wife would not have the
darnd thing quit on her every time that she went to stop.
I put the new plugs in and low and behold the thing cane to life and ran

Re: [BlindHandyMan] installing air conditioner

2006-08-05 Thread Robert Riddle
Well, our unit is a 1000 BTU unit. I think it will fit our window, which is
in the kitchen. I plan to build a brace outside, angling from two 2 by 6
support posts with a flat 2 by 4 cross section on top. I think the window
may be a little wider than the air conditioner, in which case I will cut
some lengths of lumber to brace the window and keep out the critters. I have
a swamp cooler in the hall which will, I hope, aid in air circulation. I'll
keep the list updated as to how the installation goes.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Accessible OBD-II unit

2006-08-05 Thread Robert J. Moore

Re: [BlindHandyMan] installing air conditioner

2006-08-05 Thread clifford
Dear Robert:
You will need to do some measuring before you buy and install a window
air-conditioner. There are different size units and needless to say, there
are different size windows. I once owned a unit that was narrow but tall
and it was designed to go in to those windows that crank out side to side.
Since you probably don't wish to change windows, it would be prudent to
measure your window with the bottom section raised to the max, and that way
you will know the maximum size of the unit that will fit in the whole. Most
window units come with an expandable, but flimsy, pull-out filler which will
prevent critters and air from entering beside the unit, once it is
installed.
Another concern which you should have is the weight of the unit and the
ability of the window to support that load. Large units can weigh a lot and
when you get in to the 24 to 30 thousand B. T. U. units, the weight can be a
problem for sure. Some units come with supports which brace from the
outside to prevent the unit from simply tumbling out the window.
One other issue should be investigated before buying and installing a
unit, and that is the available electric power. Larger units in the U. S.
are mostly 220 volt, while small one room units are generally 110 volt
units. Check the area around your window to ascertain where the required
voltage is available, and if need be, have a new plug installed to power the
new unit.
Having installed more than one of these units, I would suggest that you
enlist the help of a person who has enough strength to handle the size unit
you plan to install. Some of these units weigh more than a hundred pounds
and given their size, they are tough for one person to handle, no matter how
strong that person may be.

I didn't get a response last time, so I'll try again. What's the easiest way
to install a window air conditioner? Do you just stick it in the frame, plug
it in, turn it on, and get cool? Or what?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Making smooth, straight edges

2006-08-05 Thread Dale Leavens
Hello Marc,

All saws leave saw marks, this is not a deficiency of your equipment.

The correct way of straightening an edge is to use a jointer of course which
will also true the edge to the flat side. This is an expensive machine
although a bench top model is a good solution and like most such machines
now that I have one I can't imagine how I got along without it.

You may also be able to do it with your router table in a couple of ways.

Your fence may have a piece which can be slid out into the path of the
advancing stock some small distance past the cutter. The purpose of this is
to support the stock when using a cutter which removes material from the
leading edge.

With a straight cutting bit set to enough height to extend above the top of
the stock to be cut and with the fence set to remove a small amount of that
edge, maybe a sixteenth beyond the face of the fence or three thirty-seconds
and you should probably instal a feather board to keep the stock against the
fence you begin running the stock into the cutter removing that small amount
of material until the leading edge is beyond that moveable block. you stop
the router, then adjust that block by sliding it out into the path until it
is supporting the leading edge of the stock, it should be protruding from
the fence the same depth as the cutter is protruding from the fence.

So now you push your bad edge snug against the fence of the router and run
it through until it is against the block protruding from the fence then keep
the stock against that block at the leading end and against the fence at the
trailing edge and you should get a pretty good true edge which is also
pretty flat.

If you don't have such a device as part of your router fence you can clamp a
thin piece of material there in it's place.

Traditionally this is done with a hand plane, preferably a fairly long one.
They have them with a guide which protrudes down below the edge of the shoe
to help keep you at 90 degrees to the face of the wood and you should
probably work from one edge a few strokes then from the other end a few
strokes to keep you removing equal thicknesses and reducing the risk of
angling the cut toward one end or the other. It will cut much better in one
direction than the other so when you figure that out, finish in the good
direction. a good hand plane though is expensive and maintaining a sharp and
true blade takes care.

I hope I have explained this adequately, if not and I can be clearer please
don't hesitate to ask.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Barefoot mowing

2006-08-05 Thread clifford
Dear Robert:
Rocking on is a short time solution. In this area of the country, soils
tend to be acidic and applying lime is a necessary requirement in order to
obtain a good stand of grass. Instead of lime, one can cover the area with
lime
stone/gravel and given enough time, a nice stand of grass or volunteer
weeds will appear.

Rock on.

[BlindHandyMan] Making smooth, straight edges

2006-08-05 Thread Ralph Supernaw
Hi,

I want to make a cutting board out of scrap strips of cherry and maple.
These pieces are trimmings produced at a cabinet shop when squaring boards
and so they have one straight side and one uneven side.

I have tried using my table saw to trim the uneven side so it will also be
straight. The problem is that I tend to get some blade marks because I am
not pushing them through perfectly smoothly. It may also be because the
throat plate on my table saw is a bit recessed from the surface of the
table.

How can I remove the blade marks and still keep the side of the boards
straight and smooth? I have a table saw, router, and drill press available
for the task as well as assorted hand tools.

Thanks,
Ralph

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Accessible OBD-II unit

2006-08-05 Thread Otis Blue
Hi,

Well I no for sure that I need these spark plugs because every time I put
something else in there I get something weird wrong with my car. I read a
form on line that state this and that's why I have been using them every
since. This is what the manufacture put in the car when it comes from the
factory. Before they put those spark plugs in my car I couldn't even tell
if my car was running. Now I can tell for sure. I'm sure it's not the gas
because I'm using a well known gas station which is not owned by forners

Not sure about them, but do know they got accessible software for laptops.
All you need is connections for type of car. The software ain't cheap by no
means, and have thought about getting it, but not doing those kind of
repairs anymore.
On some cars if you take the keys and turn them all the way on then back to
accessories position. The car starts to beep a code out. This code can be
found in manual for what beeps mean.
But if your car is shaking at stops. You might want to check the type of gas
cheap crap will do this, or maybe timing. As far as spark plugs go. As long
as they are rated for the car in use they are just fine. Remember with some
name is all your buying.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Accessible OBD-II unit

2006-08-05 Thread Otis Blue
