K, I am toying with this idea of making a quad train whistle. It requires
that you drill 4 holes at different lengths.
The deepest hole is to be 7 and 1 fourth inches I think. I checked the paddle
bits I have and at the most, I think they are capable of drilling 4 and a half.
Is the trick to cut the wood, and drill coinciding holes in 2 or 3 different
pieces, then glue them all back together, forming longer holes, or are there
longer bits to be, had?
  I have a 12 inch drill press.

hi Steve well sense you didn't give your address here's the info you
wanted.
its for grilling a turkey but it mentions smoking

i got this from a recipe data base of how to cook a turkey all different
ways.
  Jim

  Turkey on the Grill

Grilled turkey can be a wonderful variation from oven roasted turkey.
Grilling a whole turkey or turkey breast requires indirect heat and a drip
pan. Start
by washing and seasoning a fully thawed bird. The covered kettle-style
grill and medium hot coals are recommended for grilling. Arrange hot coals
on either
side of the drip pan and position the turkey, breast side down, on an
oiled V-rack directly over the drip pan. Use a small 8 to 14 pound unstuffed
turkey.

About midway through the cooking process, turn the bird breast up. Place
about 10 briquettes on each pile of hot coals every 45 to 50 minutes to
maintain
medium heat. For good smoky flavor, dampened wood chips and/or chunks may
be added as well.

Cover the wing tips with aluminum foil and tuck them underneath the bird
to prevent burning. Insert a thermometer in the thickest innermost part of
the
thigh. A whole turkey is safe when cooked to a minimum internal
temperature of 165 °F as measured with a food thermometer. Check the
internal temperature
in the wing and the thickest part of the breast too. For reasons of
personal preference, you may choose to cook the turkey to higher
temperatures.

If the temperature under the hood is hot enough (325°F to 350°F), grilling
a 12 to 14 pound turkey should take approximately 4 hours. If your grill
does
not have a thermometer, an oven thermometer can be used. Cooking time may
vary depending on temperature of the fire, wind and outdoor air temperature.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Ye beware the killer mailbox.

2009-09-20 Thread clifford
Dear Michael and list members:
Power companies have indeed been held liable for injuries to motorists who
struck their poles, when the poles were located too close to a highway and when
they were made so strong that they would not break when hit by an automobile.
Some utilities use only break-away poles when near a highway.
I did not get enough facts about the concrete in the mail box, but it seems
to me that the owner was wanting to give the offender a sore arm, when hitting
a mail box with a bat, but I don't see the connection to the driver loosing
control of his vehicle and being killed. Often, the question turns on the
question of foreseability, and with the information I currently have about this
story, I have a hard time figuring out why the mail box owner would have
foreseen such a result.
When an actor is merely negligent, in running in to a power pole or a mail
box, that is one thing, but when the injured party was involved in a deliberate
misdeed, I do not follow the logic in prosecuting the owner
I suppose that makes for good television drama?

Yours Truly,

Clifford Wilson.

[BlindHandyMan] homeowners beware

2009-09-20 Thread Lee A. Stone

this discussion of the mailbox and someone getting killed takes me back
to our first house we owned on a big corner lot. we did not know that
three school bus's would be picking up kids there. I was told kids were
climbing the tree and one hurt his arm. so I went out one morning and
asked them to stay out of the trees we have. one parent came up and told
me where I could stick my blank blank trees. so I came back with a
stronger one. that day I bought some drive way sealer and tar and
covered the first 8 feet of two trees. next morning a parent is
banging on my door asking me why and i would get the dry cleaning bill
for at least two expensive coats. I represented myself in a local
court and the judge told me I was responsible and I asked for a delay
to find an attorney and go to elder law, if there is such a thing and
when does my property stop being mine. long and short of it was . one
parent suggested the town pay for the cleaning bills or replace the
jackets. my tax dollars replaced those three jackets and soon the bus
stop was moved down one block. my point is from state to state , from
county to county. it depends on what we do and local laws what will
protect us. I am also told that at the time if I put up No
trespassing signs that under the law those under the age of 18
cannot read. so never ever leave your power tools out or a ladder . and
think of moving so far back in the hills any project you want to do as
a blind handyman or woman is your own and not to be attacked by fast
moving cars or kids who's parent would sue in a heartbeat. Lee

Speaking of repelling animals, yesterday I got Repels-All. A product
from TC Tractor. It covers cats(my problem) dogs, skunks, links, deer,
groundhogs, rodents and armadillos plus birds and others. It looks like
granulated fertilizer and most effective if applied 6 hours before a light
rain. It is good up to 2 months. A 3 pound container was 12 bucks.
Put it where you don't want them. As for cats it is placed where they
want to scent a territory, my flowerbed.

I know I saw an electronic device mentioned on the list for keeping

and I don't have time today to go through the archives. Would someone

She has three of the laziest cats on earth. They brought the beast
in, let it go, and it died inside the back of the refrigerator. What
a mess that was, story for another day.

[BlindHandyMan] my computer power usage

2009-09-20 Thread chiliblindman
Today I was checking just what kind of power my electronics consume. The
items I leave on all the time with one computer online and others including my
wireless is about 300 watts an hour.
What surprised me was my printer. It was drawing about 10 watts waiting
for an order to print so I turned it off. The power being consumed was still
10 watts. Thinking about it a little I realized that this printer can be
turned on by the network when a printing is requested by any computer on the
network.
The cheapest item was my wireless N-extreme link and cable router, which
runs 24 watts non-stop being used or not.
Accordingly, a wireless laptop is the most economical way to go if saving
computing money is a high want factor.
