Aloha Donnie,
I didn't see an answer to your question about the mold on your
carry-bag, but maybe I just missed it. I've used vinegar to spot
clean leather, but usually use a leather cleaner. There are lots of
them out there. The reality is, that even though you get the mold
off, if the bag is not stored out of moisture, it will come back.
Saddle soap is an option, but again it only gets the mold off the
surface. Good luck,
Betsy

[BlindHandyMan] Deck project on-going

2009-09-30 Thread chiliblindman
I am back to working on my deck again. I have already started to use the
second floor for storage.
About a month or so ago I got my 200 amp line to the building, hooked up
my panel and got some lights in. Yesterday I got my water and sewer lines run
in under the foundation from my house. Today I need to back fill and get my
breeze way boards back on. Maybe not all today, but this week anyway. Along
with my water and sewer lines I also have a telephone cable, cat 6 cable, tv
cable, shielded speaker wires and an eight conductor thermostat wire run out
underground in conduit.
If I get my outdoor spigot installed by the end of the week I will be able
to start placing deck boards on the deck finally. I do have plants on it now,
hanging and sitting on joists. I have 3/4 plywood down where I need to walk
and do stuff. Once the deck is done that plywood will become storage along the
one and only full wall. I will be updating pictures at
chiliblindman.net2go.com soon if anyone cares to look.
I have been going to Baltimore to do things for my daughter and her
husband. In 2 or 3 weeks I will be going down for a week so I can install
outside lights and do and change wiring.
I hope you all have a great week..bob

excited by the independence that this product says it can offer us. I
strongly urge you to click on the Youtube link, and listen to how easy it
will be to label such things as CD's, important paperwork, prescription
bottles, canned and frozen goods, and anything else you might want to tag
for future use. It doesn't seem to be all that expensive either. This may
well be the best thing that has come along for blind people since sliced
bread, especially if you're not able to read either braille or large print.
Enjoy! Devon.

Hello all of you who joined the Bay Area Digital list for RNIB products.

I am writing you today with news about one of the most exciting new products
to hit the market in many, many years. Of course, it's an RNIB product.
Called PENfriend, it is one of the most exciting things I've seen in years.

And at Bay Area Digital, it's ON SALE! Most companies we know about retail
this product for $150 in the United States, even more. We've seen it on sale
for $140. Our retail price at Bay Area Digital is $125. Until Thursday
October 8, Bay Area Digital is putting PENFriend, on sale for an amazing
$115. Don't miss out, we probably won't ever do this again.

To hear about PENfriend and how it works, RNIB has put up a video
presentation on Youtube. Go to

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePE0-U73Ajc

When you buy with PENFriend, it comes with 127 labels. Additional packs of
may be purchased for $22 during this sale time. (Regular price is $29.95)
To take advantage of the Bay Area Digital sale, contact us by phone
(415)217-6667, or (888) 881-1998. You can also email us at

This product is so new it's not even on our website yet. So call or email
right away to get in on this sale.

All the best,

Chris

[BlindHandyMan] Barcode scanning app for the IPhone.

2009-09-30 Thread Dan Rossi
Since it has come up about this spiffy new barcode pen thing, I thought
people might be interested in the following. A company, www.redlaser.com
has developed a UPC barcode scanning app for the IPhone. It uses the
video buffer so can capture barcodes on the fly. Below is a link to a
youtube video, but since they aren't marketing to the blind, they don't
have VoiceOver on, and there isn't much description, but you can hear the
phone chirping every time it hits a barcode.

Jom,
good research, i missed that.
It'd be interesting to see how close two lables can be together without
interfeering with each other.
Our look at RFId shows this can be a real problem, but
they probably have the reader set to very short range.

Department of Defense here in the States is doing a lot in the way of
implementing RF ID into its supply chain, and I actually had some training on
this stuff last week. Apparently, there are two generations of chips out
there, and I suspect without knowing, that the RNIB product uses the older and
no longer exceptable to DOD generation. In a supply system, there would be a
computer on the back end of the reader somewhere, and there's no reason I can
think of why it wouldn't be possible to use a reader chip reader in conjunction
with a Pc with speech. Obviously you wouldn't have the portability, but you
wouldn't be limited to audio only either.

When I was working on developing a barcode reading system for the
cellphone platform, we investigated using RFID tags. There would have
been very little modification necesary to switch from a barcode scanner to
an RFID scanner. The only problem was that no one is really using product
level RFID tagging yet. Once they do start using product level tagging,
it will be incredibly useful.

2009-09-30 Thread Tom Fowle
bill,
You're correct, except that RFID setups have to be carefully taylored
to specific situations, re: distances from reader and between lables etc.
get the tags too close together and it can either get confussed or read both
so you can't tell which is which.

Looks like RNIB appropriately made it work only at very short
range which is fine for that app.

It does not, however, look like RFID is the right technology, for example,
for finding products on a crowded shelf etc.

Don,

I've done some more research into this. The app is $1.99 yep, two bucks.
The output is all accessible, but actually getting it to scan a barcode is
a bitch. It is mono-directional so you have to scan the barcode in the
correct orientation, and you kind of have to get the barcode centered in a
little box, and scan somewhat slowly. Still no where near as good as an
omnidirectional scanner or RFID. I have faith that it will happen though.
And I am going to contact the company and see if they can build in any
kind of audio feed back for zoning in on the barcode. They apparently
give some visual clues as to move the phone in or out, so audio may be
possible as well.

[BlindHandyMan] Paving project update.

2009-09-30 Thread Dale Leavens
Moving along, I have the patio a about done, waiting for the polymerized sand
and dry weather. I have laid a retaining wall between my lawn and the hedge,
four courses of 8 by 8 by 5.25 inch cement bricks which have a lip on the back
edge to lock to the course below. This wall is 18 feet along one side and a
little over 40 feet across the front. The courses are glued together. The faces
of the stones are rough cut.

I added two feet to the end of another retaining wall, these use much larger
and oddly shaped bricks 8 inches wide, more or less 6 inches high and 13 inches
deep. They have a sort of inverted 'V' shape which sits on the course below
which has a reciprocal top surface. the wall ends in a peer formed of large
squares with a capital plat on top. The wall then turns and comes forward to
hold up a part of the neighbours yard.

I have quite a bit more retaining wall to build but the weather is catching up
with me. We had snow flurries this morning.

I ended up having a disagreement with my neighbour, try as I might to avoid it.
things got worse and I am interested in the list's collective ideas.

I agreed to have a shared contractor to do the work, after all it is hard work
and the driveway is 86 feet by something over 33 feet wide. Mostly I thought I
would be saving the neighbour money and so far I haven't seen any. The
contractor did a wonderful job up to the point of installing the jointing sand.
He told me he uses beach sand, I told him not to use any, I would arrange
polymerized sand and shake it down myself. I have a compactor and put the sand
on order, nearly $1400 dollars worth. When I got home the son of a b**ch not
only had packed but sanded it too. Twice I had that conversation with him and
he ignored me. I am furious! How do I get that stuff out of the joints now? The
weather is closing in too. I had to cancel my order and so on.

Now comes time for the bill. With taxes all in I had agreed to 3600 bucks and
would have paid that night.

I mean the sand is packed in tight to the top I would be hard pressed to get it
out with a putty knife and for sure I don't want to go at it with a pressure
washer and risk shifting the sub base and there are several thousand bricks.

As we go along I find out he didn't but finish grade 7, no wonder he isn't
informed about recent developments of the past 20 years. He also lies and lies
about his lies. Bragging about the job he did at the house behind us. Well
maybe he was working for that contractor but it was done 18 years ago and the
man is 34 years old now so I rather doubt it. The other job he sighted had been
done a couple of years before I moved here and that was 21 years ago. I
neglected to ask who changed his diapers while he was on those jobs.

Anyway, he came around tonight I told him to send a bill in the usual way and I
would decide how Ai will deal with it. Of course he pressed me by saying I had
been willing to pay it the day he finished and that is true. I reminded him
that he didn't come around for the check that day neither did he respond to my
calls that night expressing my disappointment.

OK! I did not have a formal written contract.

My temptation is to discount the payment some amount and let him come for the
rest through small claims court and see what they do about it. I doubt he
would. I did print off an Internet article on Polymerized sand and recommended
that he have his wife explain it to him, why I wanted to make his good job an
excellent one and now have lost that opportunity.

Anyway, I am interested to hear what you guys think would be the fair and right
thing to do. Should I just pay up and suck it up? I admit some of it is
emotional, the arrogance of a young pup. Us book learnin guys don't know
nothing! When I hire a job I expect it done to my specifications particularly
when it means superior outcomes but even if I am wrong I expect a debate. then
if I am paying do it my way anyway.

Dale,

You have every right to be pissed. The job wasn't done to your spec so
you are probably within your right to withhold payment until the job is
done to spec. Cliff can probably weigh in much more authoritatively here.

Getting the sand out, wow, I can't imagine. The pressure washing was the
first thing that came to mind, but I understand your reluctance there.
How about shop vacking it out? You'd probably have to dump it a bunch of
times, and maybe do the Bob thing and put a pillow case over the filter.
And, it would be an extremely tedious process. Not sure how effective it
would be.

Best O luck.

 Good catch Jim,

I didn't really investigate the pen friend because I don't consider it a
good purchase for me. Thanks for clearing it up though.

2009-09-30 Thread Max Robinson
Later messages have cleared this up. The first few messages who said it was
R F I D ran it all together. I didn't have any idea what rfid was. I
thought it was just a different standard for bar codes.

I wonder if you could use your computer and printer to print your own tags.
