Re: [BlindHandyMan] buying a used car

2010-03-12 Thread Scott Howell
You will get all sorts of advice on what to ask, but consider anything said to
be suspect. I hate to be so negative, but in some cases the dealer does not
even know the total history of a vehicle. A certified pre-owned vehicle is a
good option if you can get a good deal. At least in this case the manufacturer
is standing behind the vehicle with a warranty. Also make sure you have checked
out buying guides for vehicles you are interested in. This will give you some
idea of their value when you are on the lot. Oh and one final note, never be
afraid to walk away from a deal no matter how much pressure they try to apply
and hell if they try to pressure you, tell them to go pound sand. My wife and I
just purchased a new vehicle and it was actually a pretty pleasant experience.
Apparently this dealer got it.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] buying a used car

2010-03-12 Thread Bob Kennedy
I'm glad you didn't ask what brand of used car...

First, go online and get an idea of price ranges for different cars. The
learning is on you, and don't depend on a sales person to be totally honest
with you. Some are, and some aren't. It's on you if you find a car for $1500
while the same car is showing for $3500 most places. Think of Andy Rooney.
Why is that?

Beyond that, look for the obvious things. How does the finish feel? Chips?
Dents? Scratches? Do the doors close tight? Do you need to slam them closed?

And while you aren't a mechanic, look at the tires. Pay attention to the edges
of the tread area. If you feel the nubs like a new tire, that's a question
mark. If you feel cupping or a concave surface across the tread area, the tire
has been under inflated. This often indicates neglect by the owner. If the
inner or outer edges are beveled or warn away much more than the rest of the
tread, this is a suspension problem. Anything from a bad ball joint to being
out of alignment.

Make sure the engine fires quickly and runs smoothly without having to touch
the gas at all. Computers will often make the engine turn over a few times
before it fires and that's fine. It does need to fire and idle smoothly within
just a few seconds.

Once the engine has fired and is running smoothly, give the gas a shove. Don't
stomp your foot to the floor and hold it, this makes the engine run wild and
with the transmission out of gear, there is no load on the engine and you can
damage things. Give it a couple quick jabs with your foot however. You don't
want the engine to hesitate as you hit the gas. You also don't want to hear
extra knocking, clicking or pinging as you hear the engine rev up.

Finally, with your foot on the brake, drop it in gear. Go a couple times from
drive to reverse. Hopefully you won't feel the car jolting as it changes
directions. All engines will twist a bit as they change directions but you
don't want a lot of shaking or clunking going on.

Beyond that, someone will need to drive it for you and make sure the engine
runs smoothly on the road and the transmission shifts firmly without slipping.

Sorry I can't make it more simple than that. I worked as a mechanic for over
30 years and those seem to be the important parts to focus on.

Okay,

So, we're having a bad week here, with computers and such. First, the
significant other gets a virus; then, our DSL modem goes bad, so I convinced
our telephone service provider to give us a new one!
Here is my question. The other half finally bit the bullet, and he's getting
a new Windows 7 Home Premium laptop; what e-mail programs have you all used
successfully, since I know that Outlook Express is not an option here.
Thanks. My other question is this. Can a computer virus cause problems with
a modem?
I'm not saying they're related because I don't think the two incidences are,
but I'm just curious.

would advise you to get ahold of a few buyer's guides for used cars. Again,
the list on here could go on, and on, and on, and on, and on. And it
probably will.

One thing most dealers will provide if asked is a car fax or car facts. Don't
know which way it is spelled. Basically it lists the mileage and number of
times the car has changed hands, been titled. If a major wreck or flooding
then it should show as a salvage title somewhere. Also shows any odometer
tampering.

plumber. Unfortunately, the plumber was unable to get the curb box valve

shut-off valve inside of the old one, then opened the old valve and
tightened it up and packed it so that it wouldn't leak, and never has to
 be touched again.

You can save yourself some aggravation if you find the curb box yourself.
It took me a couple of days of looking and probing. Somehow, the water
company was able to shut it off, but the plumber who showed up later
 couldn't.
