[BlindHandyMan] wall-mounted toilets

2010-03-21 Thread lvmumford
Hi all,

My husband and I will be remodeling our bathroom this fall and were wondering
if anyone knew anything about wall-mounted toilets. We came across them in
Norway and were very impressed. Because the toilet is mounted totally to the
wall, the toilet bowl is completely off the floor which makes cleaning the
toilet and the floor underneath it a cinch. Also, in Norway there were no
toilet tanks-- there was a flush button on the wall-- I have no idea where the
tank was or if there was even any tank at all. Has anyone ever heard of these
kind of toilets? If so, what are their pros and cons?

Much thanks,
Linda

Hi,

Those blades are to turn without resistant. They direct the food into the
cutters. I would bet you will have to loosen the material that is caught in the
cutters. U can use a wrench that came with the unit or use a socket that fits
the nut inside the unit. by placing it in the insides of the unit. I believe
the nut should be turned clockwise.

[BlindHandyMan] re: update on sealing tile

2010-03-21 Thread lvmumford
Here's an update to the message I posted about a week ago on whether or not to
seal the new tile to be installed in our home. We are also having Laticrete
electric radiant heat mats installed underneath the tiles. The Laticrete
technician who was at our house on Thursday with our contractor to look over
the job suggested that we use epoxy grout. He said it would eliminate the need
for sealing and that it is used for commercial projects because it's very stain
resistant, and doesn't need sealing or resealing. He said in the past epoxy
grout was difficult to apply and was very expensive but that the epoxy grout on
the market nowadays (the Laticrete one anyway) is much easier to use and is
cost effective.

[BlindHandyMan] what rip fence

2010-03-21 Thread Lenny McHugh
When I was at the Grizzly showroom, droolingg over some table saws, a
customer came in to upgrade his saw fence system. The sales man told him
that they had two models one was all aluminum with a track for hold downs or
stops and the other was similar to a beismeyer (however you spell it). The
second one had replacement phynolic plastic sides. The salesman was
starting to explain the benefits of both when they walked down the isle so
the guy could see the aluminum fence. I sure whish I could have heard what
the sales guy finally recommended and why.

those of us who have purchased these meters from MPJA and are happy
with them should contact them and let them know so they are encouraged
  to continue carrying them.

they probably got whines from some silly blindies who wanted labratory grade
  instruments for that price.

So go buy one and stop being so bloody paranoid, besides there is the
minor fact that it is the only talking meter now available.

We have at least 3 of them here and they're just fine, especially for the

I suppose some, blindies nobody on this list of course, just aren't

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Sheet goods carrier.

2010-03-21 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi Dan,

A couple of years ago, I bought an appliance dolly from Harbor Freight. The
handles are approximately 5 feet tall which makes it great for moving large
items such as refrigerators and tall pieces of furniture. The wheels are
approximately 6 inches in diameter and are made of hard rubber. It also has
two v-belts on the back to make going up and down stairs quite easy.
Finally, it has a long belt with an excellent locking handle to keep things
on the dolly. The dolly is very well constructed and I've never had a
problem with it. I've moved things as large as a refrigerator and teak wall
unit and as heavy as my 3 hundred pound safe. The dolly set me back $65
when I purchased it. Take a look at their online catalog. You might find
something you like at a reasonable price.

Take care,

Ed

[BlindHandyMan] Molded Bathroom Walls!

2010-03-21 Thread Claudia

Hi All,

I don't know what you call this, but here is my question.
In our bathroom, we have that fitted molding, around 3 walls of our tub. It's
either made of acrylic or a hard plastic.
I don't recall what it's called, but it's starting to chip. Why would the
previous owners have put something up lie this? Is it because they wanted to
protect the walls underneath, or because they were trying to hide or cover
something up?
These things are very expensive to purchase install, aren't they?
It's pretty easy to clean, but, as I said, I'm a little worried now because I
think my son is scraping off the acrylic from the walls, and I'm thinking this
could be dangerous!
The molding goes up, to at least 3 quarters from the top of the walls, and it's
got shelves for soap, bars for wash clothes, etc.

[BlindHandyMan] grizzly drill press table

2010-03-21 Thread Lenny McHugh
So far the only real dislike is the sacrificial center square. At Home Depot
I thought I could get a small piece of melamine to make some different
inserts. They used a 5/16 thick piece. I know that I can make a few but
thought they would have used a standard stock material.
I want to drill some large holes so my sanding drum will drop into the
table.
I do have some scrap Baltic birch 1/2 inch plywood. I can cut some 3 15/16
squares then make a rabbet cut to make them fit. A little more work but much
cheaper. ---

Do you have a Circuit City chain of electronic shops? You may be able to buy
one there.

I expect to be in the UK the end of July and early August from Canada I may
be able to get you one that way. Where do you live?

If I was Han Solo I'd probably pet my wookie

  Hi

This looks like a great meter at a really affordable price. As previously
mentioned if it were specifically made for blind people it would more than
likely cost 3 figures.

I'd love something like this but unfortunately live in the Uk and looking at
the website it seems that they only ship within the US.

Is there anyone from the Uk on here who has managed to get hold of one of
these meters?

  Darren.

those of us who have purchased these meters from MPJA and are happy
with them should contact them and let them know so they are encouraged
  to continue carrying them.

they probably got whines from some silly blindies who wanted labratory grade
  instruments for that price.

So go buy one and stop being so bloody paranoid, besides there is the
minor fact that it is the only talking meter now available.

We have at least 3 of them here and they're just fine, especially for the
  price.

I suppose some, blindies nobody on this list of course, just aren't
happy unless they pay too much for poor quality junk as we so often do.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Molded Bathroom Walls!

2010-03-21 Thread Bill Gallik
Claudia,

When Carol and I had our upstairs bathroom in Wheaton, IL. remodeled we opted
for one of these tub surrounds for several reasons:

1) the original tub was badly pitted, scratched and in generally horrible
condition
2) the existing wall tile was done horribly and proved to be a bitch to clean
- including the crappy grouting job
3) the cost of a regular tub and walls was about three times that of the tub
surround
4) the new tub surround proved to be quite easy to clean and looked terrific
5) the new tub surround protected the integrity of the support walls

I believe the surround we bought was made of an acrylic plastic. But then, we
had no little ones to cause damage. Unless you've got a well healed bank
account, these acrylic or fiberglass surrounds (tub included) are marvelous for
cleaning and look fine although the tub seems a bit flimsy when you stand in it.

If you want some silicone that seals and sticks well, Lowes carries something

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Molded Bathroom Walls!

2010-03-21 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Hi Claudia,
I have those in both of my bathrooms and love
them. Depending on where one lives they may be
costly, but here I can get a replacement for
about $200. When we had to replace a washer in
our tub faucet, I priced a replacement because it
was a good possibility that the enclosure was
going to get cracked in order to get to the
problem. It didn't crack for which I was most grateful.

Having had tile and cleaning it for years, I
would put another enclosure in if something
happened to ours. What is your son using to
scrape it? It's not easy. Perhaps you can remove
the problem before it gets any worse. Maybe you
can remove anything from the bathroom that is sharp.
Betsy

Hi All,

I don't know what you call this, but here is my question.
In our bathroom, we have that fitted molding,
around 3 walls of our tub. It's either made of acrylic or a hard plastic.
I don't recall what it's called, but it's
starting to chip. Why would the previous owners
have put something up lie this? Is it because
they wanted to protect the walls underneath, or
because they were trying to hide or cover something up?
These things are very expensive to purchase install, aren't they?
It's pretty easy to clean, but, as I said, I'm a
little worried now because I think my son is
scraping off the acrylic from the walls, and I'm
thinking this could be dangerous!
The molding goes up, to at least 3 quarters from
the top of the walls, and it's got shelves for
soap, bars for wash clothes, etc.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Molded Bathroom Walls!

2010-03-21 Thread Dale Leavens
Why do you think he is scraping it from the walls?

When and how is he doing this?

  Hi Claudia,
I have those in both of my bathrooms and love

  Claudia

Re: [BlindHandyMan] smith and wesson multi tool

2010-03-21 Thread Lenny McHugh
I don't know. I learned about them from a grizzly.com email flyer. There was
a misprint in the flyer greatly inflating the regular price. I called to
confirm and was not sure about the quality for $10. IAt the time I was told
that they had a little over 200 left in stock. About a week later we made
the almost 2 hour trip and I was very pleasantly surprised. I purchased a
total of 8 and now wish I would have added a few more. I wanted one for the
van and the other for my shop. Since a neighbor who does a lot for us would
like one I lost the one for the shop. The rest are for Christmas presents.

[BlindHandyMan] grizzly drill press

2010-03-21 Thread Lenny McHugh
Well I have the G7943 12 speed. I really liked the new table until tonight.
At first I thought I had a problem since I installed the new power twist
link belts. Where I had it set for a project the drop was less than a half
an inch before it stopped. I checked everything to make sure that the
settings were correct. Then I discovered the problem. The new table has a 3
inch fence and after a short pull one of the three handles would hang up on
the fence. I will have to call them tomorrow for some suggestions.
