Re: [BlindHandyMan] Yes, Can hot water freeze faster than cold water?

2010-07-18 Thread Dan Rossi
I'm with Max. It doesn't appear that this is consistently repeatable.
And, lest anyone thinks this will save them money, thinking that since hot
water freezes faster than cold, and thus you start making all your ice
cubes with hot water, that is absolutely untrue. That would definitely be
in violation of conservation of energy, not to mention that you would be
heating the water first, then cooling it down, so you would be doubly
wasting energy.

2010-07-18 Thread Max Robinson
Bullshit. If anybody on this list can make hot water freeze faster than
cold water I'll eat my words. But you had better be able to do it any time
you want and not just have it happen once out of many trials.

2010-07-18 Thread Max Robinson
I agree completely with that. I also heard it sometime in the 60s. And if
anyone is wondering, a couple of winters ago I tried the experiment with two
buckets of water set out on the porch. The cold one froze first as physics
would tell you.

They used to use hot water to resurface skating ice surfaces however I believe
part of the reason is to flow the new surface smooth to the old one. They may
still do so.

I've heard this throy that hot water freezes faster than cold, but never
tried or understood it completely. I know that many people use submersible
electric heaters to keep stock tanks and the like from freezing, so
according to this theory if I understand it, that must be a mighty
energy-intensive thing to do.

Lennie,

Well, you can't have everything. (LOL)

Now, think of this, water is H2O so how could you remove any oxygen from it
and still have water?

Hi,

Interestingly there was a theory that the water from the hot water tank had
less oxygen thus is would freeze faster than cold water from the regular
tap. Also, it was thought that the act of heating the water would remove or
help kill bacteria which may or may not be in the city water.

I will tell you one thing, you do *NOT* want to put your hands under the hot
water in our house after it has run long enough to warm up the pipe. It is
*HOT*. I actually like it that way as it takes a lot less hot water to get
the comfortable temp in a shower.

Lee,

My side by side is a Whirlpool from Sears and it has that blamed bail which,
occasionally, gets stuck in the "up" position and no one notices until there
is no ice coming forth. (LOL)

I also want to complain bitterly about how hard that bail is to reach. I
have fixed the little top tray affair on the ice maker's hopper so that I
can just raise it up and reach the blasted bail.

someone besides the Sears repair guys, like a

definitely do something else. They charged a friend $150 to hook up a new
refrigerator that has water and ice. A bout a month later he discovered
that they hooked it into the hot water line. The only way he found it was he
went to get a drink while the dish washer was running. Anyway they wanted
another $120 to come out and correct the problem. That was in the Memphis
area or I would have done it for him.

I just sent this checklist to the one who is , well non supportive
of whatever. yes we get cold water from the spicket in front and
it has the auto select for ice cubes, crushed ice and so on. only one
tube feeds the machine from down in the basement but will have them
check oh forgot, yes it says with the new filter to purge it by
tapping out I think 2 galons of water? to activate the filter.so
give me 21 hours to finish a couple of cold ones and until someone
will listen to other suggestions. at this time I think it is safer in
Iraq. Lee

Re: [BlindHandyMan] another freezer question

2010-07-18 Thread Bob Kennedy
The first thing that comes to mind here is the temp in the fridge side. Many
models had a door or vent that opened and closed between the two sides. This
door would close too far when the fridge side was turned all the way up,
directing most of the cold air to the fridge and not allowing enough to stay in
the freezer.

It's a place to start.

okay it is that time of year when we plug in a old side by side in
our shed . the refrigerator side seems to be fine but nothing is
freezing up on the freezer side. I usually fill what I call number
ten cans/ institutional sized cans I buy beans and other thngs.
normally i fill a few of those cans with water and within a day I
have frozen ice blocks . the machine is running now two days and the
water in the freezer is very cold but not a drop of ice. I do not want
to spend a dime on that old machine and would rather use it on its back
as a raised garden bed or a new home for night crawlers if it will not
work right. the other part of me thinks this old unit is burning up
way to much electric . however the other side of the family says" give
it a chance". again any suggestions beside a burial would be
  appreciated. thanks Lee

Re: [BlindHandyMan] No ice cubes

2010-07-18 Thread Bob Kennedy
This was a problem on several models when they changed the filter.

First question. Do you get cold water through the dispenser?

Some guys would change the filter and not purge the line which can cause an air
bubble.

If the cold water runs through the door, then check to make sure there isn't a
separate line feeding the ice maker. The valve may be closed at the back of
the fridge.
Next, check the arm on the ice maker. If it is up, 90 degrees to the tray,
that is in the off position. Flip it down and see if you hear water run.

The water running isn't always instant after flipping the lever back down.
There is a timer in place and solenoids and all that fun stuff.

Check this and see if everything is as it should be.

Haven't had an ice maker for many years, but I
seem to remember that you could turn off the ice

installed the filter and forgot to turn it back
