[BlindHandyMan] Re:Happy Mothers Day -- Mom's with hammers
Thank you Lee. How about Moms who have picked up a soldering iron? That is the latest handy-work I've done. The other day I fixed Felix's broken reverb chamber in his amplifier by re-soldering a connection that had come loose. Felix said I did a great soldering job. He said it was better than the other soldered connections on the part. Peace, Jan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID Bluesjanet http://skype.org for free download _ Make every IM count. [BlindHandyMan] Re: to fret or to fretless
Felix says to just use Franklin Hyde Glue. He says it'll work just as well but just takes longer to dry. I can't attest to that comment, since I've only had experience with superglue in fixing holes. But, that's what Felix says. (Janet shrugs her shoulders). When I put the superglue - sawdust layers in, I did not push in the saw dust at all. I just sprinkled a pinch in, and then put a couple more drops of superglue in, then sprinkled some more sawdust in, and so on. I put in about a pinch of sawdust at a time. Felix says if you are working on an expensive guitar fretboard, to please just find a good luthier to fix the nicks and holes in the fretboard for you. If you are just learning, it is best to learn on a guitar neck that you won't be devastated over if it gets messed up. I screwed up one of Felix's guitar necks trying to fix a large chip right at the nut. I tried using wood putty to repair the slot and then tried sanding it. It felt okay but looked horrible. The colors didn't match. Felix chipped it, while pulling the nut out, then I tried to fix it. Well, it wasn't fixable. Not by me anyway! But fortunately, it wasn't an expensive guitar neck. We ended up giving that guitar neck to the luthier as a gift. If he can fix it, more power to him! There are alot of... dare I say it... junky guitars out there, at swap meets, pawn shops, garage sales, and so on... to practice working on! That is what Felix does! He's always perusing these places for cheap guitars he can fix up and resale. And he does. Most of them. Every so often, the guitar serves as nothing more than a learning experience. But that's okay, because it was a cheap guitar to begin with. I wonder if there's a nice neat way to make sawdust in different sizes. Ay you laugh, but maybe a sawdust -making machine. grin Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Download Messenger. Join the im Initiative. [BlindHandyMan] Re: to fret or to fretless
Hi. I don't post very often at all. But on this topic, the luthier that Felix works with showed me how to fix a chip in the wood that was on a guitar neck-- a little boo boo where a small piece of wood had come out of the fretboard. Are you paying attention? He said to me very sternly and sort of upset me a bit. But it served its purpose-- to make me pay close attention. He had a glass jar full of rosewood 'sawdust' I guess you could call it. He had saved it from many many guitars he had worked on. He saved every last granual of rosewood sawdust-- he never threw any away, ever. The he took some superglue, yes, superglue and put a few drops into the hole, then some rosewood dust, then more superglue, then more rosewood dust, and so on until the hole was full. He then took some very fine sandpaper, 1500 grit, and buffed it smooth. And do you know what? When he was finished, you couldn't tell there was ever a hole there. Smooth as a baby's butt and visually too, there was no visual sign of the hole. (I am sighted.) I was very impressed. Then when we got home, Felix took some of the dust from the cardboard box he had his guitar sitting in while he was leveling the fretboard and had me put it into a baggie since we didn't have a nice big pickle jar handy like his luthier had, and then he asked me to fix a few smaller cacks that really only required one application of the superglue followed by one application of the saved dust, of which we didn't have much of anyway, and then I buffed it with 1500 grit sandpaper, and I too was able to smooth out some small nicks. Felix should have done it. Then he could describe it being done. But, it was me instead of him, this time. I'm only posting her today to describe my success in filling in holes in rosewood guitar fingerboards. Now, where does one find rosewood dust? The luthier saved his from leveling and cutting fretslots on many, many rosewood fingerboards. Felix and I think that if one knows where to get a piece of rosewood, it would be easy enough to make rosewood sawdust from that. Maybe even fun, too! Felix and I talked about this. I think this gadget is a GREAT idea! I'm a little scared of hammers because, being sighted set aside, I have whacked my fingers, and it hurts. Some sighted people are just clutzey. Felix says he just instinctively knows where to hit the nail after a few little test taps. Okay then. Not all of us are psychic like Felix is, right? ha ha ha. I'd buy this gadget in a heartbeat. Peace, Janet Skype ID Bluesjanet http://skype.org talk to anyone, anywhere, free, forever _ Find what you need at prices youll love. I get it now, I am sorry. One must touch the nail as a reference for where to hit it. And I don't have to because I'm sighted. You are right. It does seem to be a tool designed for sighted folks.
