I had to do a double take on the subject line here...grins

Can't really offer you the kind of "dip stick" your wanting. However, have
sure known many of them though haha

Good luck,

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

2006-10-25 Thread one foxy lady
Hi David and others..

I have a Train furnace and air conditioner together and the filter I use is
a 25 by 25 a special one that Train provided. It opens up like a book has a
hook to lock it when closed it's in a metal frame and once open then it
unfolds out for cleaning which they said it can be washed off with water or
use a vacuumed hose and blow it out.
Hope that's helpful to you I haven't had to clean it but once about every 6
months but that might be too I have a air purifier installed as well on the
unit and keeps it pretty clean very little dust and debree collected on it..

Re: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-17 Thread one foxy lady
Well as a blind female and should I need to have some major repairs done
which I do have some patio issues hanging over my head and I asked this list
for some info pertaining to what I needed to do to have it fixed and I
received a ton of excellent information on the subject..
I of course will not do the repairs myself, but I like being aware of what
it takes to have the job done correctly and the tools/supplies are all
visual products but least I will know if I'm getting a good deal on the job
rather than being in the dark and having to go alone with whatever is
suggested at the time when it could be a less expensive way for me..
I appreciate the wealth of info that is provided on this list many many
things I never knew of.
So as far as I'm concerned I think this list is well worth the efforts all
is put forth into and the researching of said products weather blind or
sighted do it is irrelevant..

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Measuring Faserners and Screws

2006-10-16 Thread one foxy lady
This comes in handy at a very good time as I have some kitchen chairs
missing some screws and hopefully I can get the right size or close enough
to work.
Pretty facinating how a screw is measured here..

Thanks for the post,

Hailley

I am $70 poorer today but at least my trees growing over the top of my house
and I have a 2 story and over the top of my patio cover as well all in the
backyard where this tree was providing alittle bridge for some pesky
acrobatic ants cousins to the carpenter ants this is not a joke..were coming
into my upstairs bathroom dead..according to the pest control company last
year who advised me to give them $300 to rid me of these pests and for one
year did not only when it was winter did they disappear..so when the time
came again I was asked if I wanted to renew my contract and I said "no"
since the problem was still occuring. I was then told..if I cut back my tree
it would prevent them from gaining access into the house!
Well let me tell you it took much much effort on my part not to give this
guy a piece of my mind!!
The very company who a year ago took $300 to rid me of them and now tells me
to cut the tree back! Well thanks to my gardener and a product
called..Pruneing Seal which is found at Ace Hardware in either a spray or a
paint it on seals the cut limbs from ever growing back..
It cost $5.96 and doesn't take much..a friend of mine had done it to his
trees 4 years ago and the tree limbs have never grown back.

Here is a good article explaining about the "sleep and Hibernate" modes for

you a better understanding or least it did for me..

hahah I thought FS was fixin' that problem but guess not..
Well knock on wood..so far I haven't hit those yet. I did one time just
alittle but some of them didn't do anything so maybe it's not hooked up or I
wonder if it's connected somehow to the monitor and the monitor speaker part
is not plugged up at all just the monitor but it's off most of the time so
maybe that's why they don't work?

But whatever works for ya..grins

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Neighbor's Pets

2006-09-26 Thread one foxy lady
hmm..don't think I want to trade pests there with you grins
I'm alittle afraid to do the trap route fear of myself or my property I
already feel as if I'm taken advantage of because I can't see and I already
had a bit of an issue with this neighbor over another issue concerning our
adjoining fence..
she has a couple of boys and one is around 11 and he likes to throw a ball
across from his yard to mine and let family pooch chase it and sometimes his
aim is wrong and it hits my trees and porch or garage door..
when I've called her left messages it clears up for a time then goes right
back maybe I should threaten her to remove the pests as you suggest here..
I hate to do this as much as I hate the problem..I fear at some point in
time there might be an incident that I might need her assistance and if I
have threatened her beloved pets then I'm not going to get any help from her
unlessshe's one of these real forgiving type people..

[BlindHandyMan] Neighbor's Pets

2006-09-25 Thread one foxy lady
Hello List,

Well yall may or may not be able to help me with this..
I have a front porch that extends the length of my house and 4 columns to
support the roof overhang which I suspect that is why my neighbor's cats
like to laze away the day on my bench on this porch and they have a dog too
who likes to run back and forth in between the little bushes that sits in a
row in front of the bench on the porch.
I have asked my neighbor to better monitor her pets she works all day and
leaves them outside to roam the neighborhood so my question is how can I rid
myself of these pests.

I like animals but just not unwanted ones..

Thanks,

Hailley

Thank you.

At least if I hire someone to fix this problem I'll have a bit of knowledge
as to what they are referring to and know weather the best product is used
for the job..

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Expansion and Contraction Joint Fillers

Hi
EXPANSION <-> CONTRACTION JOINT FILLERS
ASPHALT, FIBRE, CERAMAR FLEXIBLE FOAM, SPONGE RUBBER,
CORK and SELF-EXPANDING CORK

MINIMIZE STRESS DAMAGE AND ENHANCE THE PERFORMANCE CAPABILITIES OF CONCRETE
WITH PROPER JOINTING TECHINQUES TO ACCOMODATE EXPANSION-CONTRACTION CYCLES.

Concrete expands and contracts with temperature and moisture changes...as
the temperature rises or the moisture content of the concrete increases,
expansion
takes place...as the temperature drops, the concrete will contract. The
provision to accommodate movement at predetermined locations with proper
joint
applications, prevents the development of stresses that could rupture the
concrete.

Joint type and spacing will vary with each project according to the type of
structure, climatic conditions and anticipated stresses in the concrete. The
coefficient of thermal expansion in concrete is 0.055 per linear inch of
concrete per degree Fahrenheit of temperature change yielding approximately
.66 inch of movement per 100 feet with a 100ºF (38ºC) temperature range.

To estimate expansion, multiply length in inches x number of degrees of
anticipated temperature differential x 0.055. Use the resulting
anticipated
movement to determine correct thickness of the control joint and proper
spacing for placement of the joint.

Thinner joints (1/4", 3/8" or 1/2") (6.35mm, 9.53mm or 12.7mm) spaced at
frequent intervals offer greater control than thicker joints spaced at
greater
intervals. The basic concept is to provide ample room for the concrete to
expand and contract without creating damaging stresses and resultant
cracking.

Expansion and Contraction Joint Fillers

Technical Description
ASPHALT Expansion Joint Filler is composed of a blend of asphalts, vegetable
fibers and mineral fillers formed under heat and pressure between 2
asphalt-saturated
liners. It is waterproof, permanent, flexible and self-sealing.

FIBRE Expansion Joint is composed of cellular fibers securely bonded
together and uniformly saturated with asphalt to assure longevity. Fibre
Expansion
Joint is versatile, resilient, flexible and non-extruding. When compressed
to half of its original thickness, it will recover to a minimum of 70% of
its
original thickness.

CERAMAR® Flexible Foam Expansion Joint Filler is composed of a unique blend
of isomeric polymers in a very small, closed-cell structure. Gray in color,
CERAMAR is a lightweight, highly flexible and resilient material offering
recovery qualities of over 99%. This mini closed-cell structure is virtually
non-absorbent. It can be wrapped or formed around curved or circular
surfaces.

SPONGE RUBBER Expansion Joint is produced to a uniform thickness and density
from gray-colored, top-quality, blown sponge rubber. It is easily compressed
and has a recovery of 95% or more of the original thickness and a density of
not less than 30 pounds per cubic foot (480.56 kg per cubic meter).

CORK Expansion Joint Filler is produced from clean, selected, granulated
cork bonded with a phenolic resin. It is highly resilient, will compress
without
extrusion and recover to 95% of its original thickness after 50%
compression.

SELF-EXPANDING CORK Expansion Joint is formed and compressed under heat and
pressure to permit expansion up to 140% of original thickness after
installation
which permits the filler to compensate for concrete shrinkage. Normal
humidity conditions after installation activate the self-expanding
properties of
the cork.

Typical Control Joint Installations

Uses
Asphalt Expansion Joint can be used in 80% of all control joint
applications. It is ideally suited for joints in sidewalks, driveways,
streets, single and
multi-level floor slabs. Due to its unique self-sealing characteristic, no
subsequent joint sealing is required.

FIBRE Expansion Joint is ideal for use on highways, streets, airport
runways, sidewalks, driveways, flatwork and scores of commercial and
industrial applications.
Refer to Data Sheet No.
320-F.
Use SNAP CAP to install 1/2" (12.7mm) below the concrete surface and seal
with
#164,
HI-SPEC
® or Cold-Applied
SOF-SEAL
® for maximum protection from water infiltration, weathering and to assure
proper performance. Refer to Data Sheet Nos. 220, 221, and 224.

CERAMAR Flexible Foam Expansion Joint is gray in color and provides an
excellent joint filler and back-up material for use in either horizontal or
vertical
applications where expansion and contraction movements must be accommodated.
CERAMAR is compatible with all currently popu

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Cracking Check List

2006-09-14 Thread one foxy lady
That was an interesting and informative read..

I live in Dallas, TX not aware of any place in TX that some shifting doesn't
occur. I first noticed this a year ago when they decided to build right
behind our houses and the unearthing and the vibrations alone made it feel
as if we were having an earthquake. My windows even rattled. But we had an
extremely hot and dry 2 summers in a row and despite the watering the ground
cracked in many places in my backyard. I had to hook up two soaker hoses
around the foundation of my house front and back as I had noticed my doors
sticking and swinging back halfway. Since the construction behind me was
also a contributing factor and the dryness I do think part of this based on
the information listed here can partly be due to the soaker hose since it is
very near this area. I usually ran it for a good 30 minutes to an hour a
couple times a week. Now my doors are working properly, but the patio slab
has increased it's gap away from the house about the same width as the
soaker hose.
It seems like the back door is no longer level to the slab I think there
always was a slight step but it's most noticeable now..

[BlindHandyMan] Patio Gap

2006-09-13 Thread one foxy lady
Hello,

I have a small concrete patio slab in my backyard and due to extreme dryness
and heat a gap the width of the slab has pulled apart from the house it is
about a 2 inch space. I need to know what to do to reconnect it to the
house?

Thanks,

Hailley
