[BlindHandyMan] Click Ruler versus Rotomatic
I'm getting ready to put in some baseboards and some interior door casings. Can anyone recommend which of the above would work best for measuring the length needed and then measuring the wood for the miter saw cut? Previously when I used my talking tape for measuring the board to cut on my miter saw, I have the following problems. First of all the metal tab on the end of the tape won't hold around the edge of the board. So, I have to hold the dumb end down by sticking a push pin into the first perforated hole in the tape to hold it down. Bear in mind, if I don't work fast the talking tape turns off and I have to pull the pin and reset the tape and start over. Secondly, I run the tape down the board to the correct measurement, against my saw blade, then badk the tape off and make my cut. After the cut I pull the tape to the end of the board to check my measurement. Again, I have to work fast or the thing will turn off again. Anyway, all this stuff is ridiculous, so, I was wondering whether I would have better luck using a click ruler or the rotomatic. Since I've never used either of them, I don't know which one might work the best for these applications. Can anyone out there advise me on this Thanks, Tom Hodges? Tom, I do not believe that the click rule or the rotomatic will be long enough. Try and make a story stick. Basically the story stick is two pieces of wood each longer than half the total distance that you want to measure. Then you slide each stick to the walls for the baseboard length. then you clamp the two sticks together. OK I have and uise a click rule for stuff 4 feet and under and even at that it gets a little cumbersume to handle. If you are cutting trim to go between two walls two strips of board that will span the distance and overlap so you can clamp them together with a couple of c clamps works best for longer pieces. Even with the click rule I use the distance between the two ends rather than use it as a real measuring tool. The idea is to put the rule or the boards into the space with the tightness of fit you want and then saw it the exact same length. Who cares how many inches as long as it fits? Personally I have trouble measuring and cutting miters precisely and generally have to go a little long then sneak up on them. Because there usually isn't enough length on the Rotomatic, my weapon of preference I often cut a 45 on the end of a suitable length or more of the material then using that and the Rotomatic to make up the length I can then use that to set the saw distance more exactly. Just lay the piece on the stock to be cut and measure from the but end to the end of the stock. The saw can then easily be lined up along the cut. A tape is really difficult to use which is probably why sighted people use a sharp pencil line. Many also use a conventional tape measure with a good lock, lock the distance in then take that to the saw. I sided this two story house exactly that way several years ago. Never knew the actual length of any of it just the spanned distance using a locking tape measure. For long cuts it meant bolding the tape gently over and some care not to permit the lock to slip and several times I had to renew the measure because I lost the lock.
