Re: [BlindHandyMan] Deck Screws?
I picked up a drill guide at my local home depot. I don't remember the exact price but I think it was about 20 or 30 dollars. You set it up with a square and the drill bit goes in perfectly straight. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Deck Screws?
I like to buy long screws like that and even longer ones with the square Robertson style socket. It isn't too hard to drive them straight but it takes a pretty good driver if you don't drill first. I have a pretty good driver and occasionally it will twist the screw right off. When they get that thick too, they will usually split out the ends of a board if you are within a couple of inches of the end. Things like adding oil or wax can help but two drills, one with a driver and the other with a drill bit is my preferred method. getting them in straight isn't any more difficult than driving four inch nails and it isn't so long ago that nails were the only practical option for securing decking. I don't think anyone uses screws for fixing together framing components like walls and joists yet though more are now using pneumatic nailers. They are pretty expensive for most of us doing a one-off job though.
